18.01.2022 You might be wondering what will happen if there are more cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Queensland and how you could be affected. From what we know a...bout novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in China, most people (around 81%) only develop mild illness and recover easily. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes, are more likely to develop severe illness. About 2.3% of people who have contracted the disease in China have died, and most of those were older people or had underlying medical problems. Our Queensland population and health system is very different to China, and we have had time to prepare. We expect that when the virus reaches Australia, we will not see as many deaths or severe cases. Our hospitals are ready and prepared to respond. We have responded to health emergencies in the past, and we will do it again. The best way to look after yourself and your loved ones is by washing your hands often and properly, staying 1.5 metres away from people who cough or sneeze, and staying home if youre sick. You should also stay up-to-date with the latest information on www.health.qld.gov.au/coronavirus

18.01.2022 MEASLES ALERT GOLD COAST The Gold Coast Public Health Unit has been notified of a second case of measles on the Gold Coast in a week. This person spent time... in the following locations while unknowingly being contagious: - Skateboard park in Currumbin on 24 September - Skateboard park in Runaway Bay on 27 September - Dreamworld on 29 September - Westfield Helensvale Shopping Centre on 30 September Members of the public who were in these areas, on these dates, need to be alert for symptoms of measles for the next three weeks. The initial signs and symptoms of measles include fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore red eyes. This is followed a few days later by a blotchy, red rash which often starts on the face and then becomes widespread over the body. If you have any of the measles signs or symptoms contact your GP. It is important to call the medical practice first if you think you might have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid spreading it to others. You are generally considered to be immune to measles if: You were born before 1966; or You have had two documented doses of a measles containing vaccine (such as MMR); or You have measles immunity proven on blood testing; or You have had laboratory-confirmed measles disease. Anyone who does not meet the above criteria would benefit by contacting a GP regarding immunisation. Vaccination now will not prevent infection from this particular exposure, but it will help protect you in the future. The measles vaccine is provided free for any person born during or since 1966. For more information on the measles virus, visit the Queensland Health website or call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84).
