13.01.2022 Autumn Message to Customers Queenslanders planning household repairs and maintenance during the autumn season are urged to leave electrical work to the professionals. NECA CEO, Suresh Manickam, reminds homeowners that its not worth jeopardising the investment they have made in their home and potentially their content and building insurance, in order to save the modest cost of having the work done properly.... "Some homeowners may want to take shortcuts to catch up with home improvements and repairs during the autumn season" says Mr Manickam. But even if you think you know what you are doing, never attempt to do your own electrical work. First of all its illegal, also dangerous, and whats more it can be fatal, he added. Jobs that are definitely not suitable for anyone other than a licensed electrician to carry out include: installing a new power point, replacing a light switch, replacing a batten holder with a new light fitting, altering the location of an existing power point, replacing a light fitting with a ceiling fan. Homeowners are also advised not to carry out repairs to electrical equipment or appliances but to take them to a licensed electrician or authorised service agent. "Major damage to your home from an electrical fire caused by unlicensed work is not only extremely risky but may also lead to an insurer refusing your claim. So always get a licensed electrician to do any electrical work, and check first that they have a current licence," Mr Manickam concluded.

06.01.2022 Most people have safety switches in their houses but DO THEY WORK? There is a simple test the home owner can do. On all safety switches there is a push to test button. All manufacturers advise either monthly or quarterly testing depending on the make. Push the button and ensure the safety switch trips off. If it doesnt then it may be faulty and need replacing. Contact your electrician or Broadenridge Electrical for further testing or replacement.... Remember Safety Switches Save Lives. See more

04.01.2022 Christmas Safety. Please check all electrical leads for damage. This is as simple as running your hand over the lead for its entire length and you can feel any Knicks or cuts plus visually inspect leads. Remember general extension lead female connection points are not weatherproof. The new starlight led lights claim to be weatherproof, however, the plug end where it plugs into an extension lead is not. Be careful. ALWAYS test safety switches if installed. If not call us and w...e can install them for you. Keep safe with electricity. See more

02.01.2022 Household death prompts safety warning on vacuum cleaners The Electrical Safety Office (ESO) is asking electrical contractors to remind customers not to attempt their own electrical repairs, as an investigation begins into the death of a man last week where a vacuum cleaner was found disassembled, exposing live parts. ESO head Dr Simon Blackwood said the vacuum cleaner was of the type that had a 240V powered head which is supplied by concealed wiring within the vacuums me...tal wand. While this investigation is on-going, it is a timely reminder of the risks of working with electricity and working on or near exposed live parts, Dr Blackwood said. No-one without a licence should ever attempt DIY repairs on electrical equipment beyond non electrical maintenance recommended by the manufacturer. The risks to you and your family are huge. It is also important to make sure your electrical appliances, electrical wiring, extension leads and other electrical equipment are regularly checked and kept in good working order. Speaking of the recent incident, Dr Blackwood said power brush heads were normally connected to the main vacuum unit by a flexible hose. Many designs have the hose permanently connected to the handle, which contains 240 volt electrical parts (like slip rings) inside. If the handle is removed, dismantled or broken, or the hose damaged, the electrical parts can be exposed and dangerous. If you have one of these vacuums, you must follow the manufacturers instructions when using or maintaining it, Dr Blackwood said. That means turning off the vacuum at the power point and unplugging it before attempting any maintenance, especially if youre trying to remove a blockage from within the vacuum hose or power brush attachment. After following the manufacturers instructions, if you still cant shift the blockage, then take the vacuum to the manufacturers authorised repair agent or a licensed electrician to get it removed. Dr Blackwood said installing a home safety switch was added insurance against electric shock. Safety switches automatically shut off the electricity supply when current is detected leaking from faulty switches, wiring or electrical appliances, he said. This stops the current flowing to earth through a person and electrocuting them. It is important to note though that nothing is failsafe safety switches should be checked every three months.
