25.01.2022 With many of us still reeling over the sudden lost of Susan Ryan - it's a poignant moment to reflect on the extraordinary achievements of this woman who was clearly a force of nature! This excellent piece by our fellow BroadTalk chatter (and brilliant journalist/academic/historian Chris Wallace) is a must read! "She is a signal example to those who despair of getting things done in democratic politics. Ryan showed, even on the most controversial issues, it can and should be ...done." Hear Hear to that!
24.01.2022 Greetings Broadies! Here's a little food for thought about the absurdity of parliament's Question Time. Has it become a sport of sexist slander - in which women are expected to play. And should they? Julie Bishop pulled no punches when she said it's not a matter of just "toughen up Princess"... but time to say "enough is enough!" Former Speaker Harry Jenkins no doubt agrees, he reckons such behaviour would be illegal in any other workplace. And he's not alone! This excellent piece by BroadAgenda's Julie Hare unpacks what players inside and outside parliament really think about the debased level of exchange. We can only hope the current Parliamentary Inquiry into "the practices & procedures relating to Question Time" is hearing this too!
24.01.2022 Greeting friends! A new pod episode of BroadTalk out now. Ck it out. A frank & fearless discussion with former MP and Minister Kate Ellis - on women, power, media madness (and meanness!)... and what leadership really looks like from the inside. Take BROADTALK out on walk with you today. She loves to stretch her legs while stretching the brain with a good yak! (make sure you Subscribe, so don't miss an episode). Kate was put through the media ringer when she first entered par...liament as a bright eyed 26 year old. We both dive in with some pretty frank reflections on how media rips into women... and what a politician should really look like! And... would she wear 'that dress' again? Listen in on any podcast platform.. and please (if you are warmly disposed!) leave a Review - which helps spread the word about BroadTalk ... (and will profoundly encourage us to do a Series 2!). Let me know what you think. Join our BroadTalk group - and share your own reflections and musings on women, power and the world! I'm always fascinated to hear from you

21.01.2022 New episode of #BroadTalk out today! Join me for a big, broad chat with Jane Halton - a woman with perhaps the most impressive CV I've seen. We talk fathers, #failures #ambition #leadership #womeninleadership #covid-19 leadership; what makes it hard for women to step up and chase that holy grail... and what it means to know the difference between... "when to break an egg and when to crack a head!" Yep, a crackin good yak!
21.01.2022 So it's Friday and that means BroadAgenda Wrap writing day. It will be out later today on BroadAgenda ... and I'll also post it here on BroadTalk. Have you caught up with the latest pod Episode, Dame Annette King? What an extraordinary career! Drop me a line after you've listened... Join our BroadTalk Group and we can share the chat. But right now we're all carrying a heavy heart for our Melbourne family, friends and colleagues. If it's any consolation, it is horribly cold, grey and soon to be wet here in Canberra! Oh, for this year to pass!
20.01.2022 Have you caught up with the latest Ep - out this week, former Chief of Army, David Morrison and 2016 Australian of the Year. Yep a controversial figure and challenging chap! And for a little more background on David and 'that video' - ck out BroadAgenda here .. http://www.broadagenda.com.au//broadtalk-with-david-morri/
19.01.2022 Dear Broadies A ripper Pod Ep coming out tomorrow - Thursday. A frank & fearless discussion with former Federal MP and Minister Kate Ellis - on Women in Politics, the damage done by Media... 'that leather dress'. And... what will it take to get more women through the parliamentary door and into the 'big' chair?... And while you're there, catch up with last week's Ep, Dame Annette King, NZ High Commissioner to Aust & NZ's longest serving female MP - another fascinating career story! https://bit.ly/2DMKLs5 (And... if you listen, and feel a bit of love... please leave a Review on Apple or any podcast platform!! 19.01.2022 Hey everyone! We had a tech glitch this morning with our zoom link: here’s the new link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85878703702
19.01.2022 An outstanding speech today at the National Press Club by Natasha Stott Despoja AO, Chair of Our Watch on the shocking truth of Australia's epidemic of violence... against women & the increase in danger being experienced in homes, across all suburbs and cities right now due to the COVID pandemic. Catch the full speech on ABC iView - or our summary here on BroadAgenda. See more
17.01.2022 Here tis folks! For those of you who have asked for a link to last weeks fantastic and whacky Bell Shakespeare Big Debate - as we slogged it out over the topic... "The fault is not in our stars, but in ourselves." Affirmative - Phyllida Beam, Mark Kenny, Amy Remeikis Negative - Bruce Meagher, Virginia, Minister Paul Bill Fletcher... Virginia - starts 38 mins / Mark starts at 30 mins And YES - WE WON!!! A blistering attack on gender inequity - (and the PM's obsession with 'building things' - he's a Taurus!) surely this is not 'fate' or 'man's choice'... surely we must blame - the stars!
17.01.2022 Hot off the turntable today!! Here 'tis. A very special end of year episode of BroadTalk with Julia Gillard. To whet your appetite and tune in your ears - for Series 2 in 2021 'Gender Equality - Are We There Yet?' - I sat down with Julia for a big, broad yak. It's a rich, robust and ... reflective discussion. Take a listen - then tell us your thoughts. (Join the BroadTalk discussion group - BroadTalk RoundTable) Is she right... has the national conversation shifted? Are women leaders now in the frame? And has she really sorted out the words to her obit already!!
16.01.2022 Friends ... here's a bit of background to the latest episode of BroadTalk - Kate Ellis. Take a look, have a listen ... let me know what you think? Have we moved past 'appearance' issues when it comes to women in leadership and positions of power? Kate's view is nope! And what about the balance between motherhood and the life of an MP? Is it possible? Or do women just bust themselves trying to prove it can work? Your thoughts?
16.01.2022 Hot off the Podcast press!! A special episode of BroadTalk to close out this extraordinary year. And what a big, broad conversation it is! Here Julie Gillard digs deep as we discuss everything from the power of self-reflection; to the state of feminism; the progress - or not - of gender equality; the challenge of being shot down by a press gallery "who might see things differently" (yes we laughed at that)... to life as a post-Prime Minister, turned global gender warrior. Yep - its a big, broad and rich BroadTalk. Enjoy! Let me know what you think. Is she too optimistic about a future world in which women take big strides - without backlash??
16.01.2022 There was one powerful and devastating mechanism Harvey Weinstein used to shut up and shut down the women he sexually abused, raped and tormented - a rather simple and straight forward legal device - the Non Disclosure Agreement, or NDA. The Hollywood tyrant may be the the biggest public example of NDA's in action, but he's certainly not the first to use NDA's... and he won't be the last. Many Australian workplaces use them too. These companies or organisations get employees... to sign NDA's, which can include banning the employee from speaking publicly about sexual assault claims - even when those claims are found to be true. Do NDA's protect women's privacy? Yes, sometimes. But more often than not, the major beneficiary is the employer, the company, organisation, or senior executive etc - who is protected from any media and public exposure. Some can quietly walk away, with no-one learning what took place. Or, if you happen to be as brazen as AMP Capital's CEO, Boe Pahari, you don't just get to keep your job, you get promoted! While the woman who was found to have been sexually harassed by you loses her job... and her career tanks! Surely it's time Australia reviews NDA's and disallows the use of them in sexual harassment cases. If we don't change the law around NDA's, it would seem to me we are legally sanctioning the protection of sexual harassers and abuse perpetrators. Why would we allow that? Read this excellent piece by Tony Nagy, on today's BroadAgenda. Join our BroadTalk group - BroadTalk RoundTable and let me know what you think.
15.01.2022 Today on BroadAgenda: the #LGBTI march forward in the ADF has been a long & painful one. But courage prevailed! (doesn't it always!!) The journey of the ADF in the time period we look at in the book is quite remarkable. And it shows that a conservative institution has the power to change. And that change happened because the ADF realised that there is strength in diversity,
14.01.2022 Hi there BroadTalk chatters... I'm just preparing BroadTalk pod for next week, Ep 5 Jane Halton... and getting a bit excited about sharing this with you. We recorded the pod on a super chilly morning several weeks ago, just days before she was appointed to head up the Gov Review into Australia's COVID hotel quarantine arrangements. And I'd forgotten how rich this discussion was and how incredibly useful. We range over a bunch of topics around leadership; failure; head-cracking moments; simpering women (!); fathers; even sisters!; whether or not women make better leaders (!!!)... a new 'feminised' style of leadership - that men are trying to adopt! Plus a whole lot more... I actually think this is well worth a thorough listen... and not just for women aspiring to leadership. But for all of us. It'll be out next Thursday

In this incredibly frank and very personal chat she opens up about the extraordinary pressures of public sector leadership - when the challenges test your moral and ethical fibre. What to do? She also shares ... her own tough backstory and the lessons learned from adversity. Well worth a listen...

12.01.2022 Friends - I've been racing through a book I can't put down and would love you to join me in launching it this MONDAY 23rd NOV 6.30pm https://bit.ly/36WgNwn Free online discussion. 'Love Marriage in Kabul' ,by Iranian writer and film-maker Dr Sanaz Fotuhi, unpacks the complex and heartbreaking story of documentary making in Afghanistan. With her powerful intuition and compassion for a culture that is both joyful and cruel, Sanaz has produced a book that is raw, provocative and... utterly gripping. I shared some of this journey with her in Afghanistan, and there is no hiding the fact - I grappled deeply with some of the content in this story and the award winning doco produced by Sanaz and Amin Palangi. But I couldn't more highly recommend both the book and film 'Love Marriage in Kabul.' Join our discussion on Monday as we explore what makes this story both precious and painful.

05.01.2022 Today on BroadAgenda: Editor, Julie Hare summarises the Male Champions of Change report released today on preventing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace & how CEO's and corporate leaders must handle it. A pretty fascinating read - given we rarely approach harassment prevention from the CEO perspective. Today's report suggests - among other things - cases of sexual harassment should be directly linked to an Executive's performance scorecard ... Read Julie's piece for more (click below) ... and the report here... https://bit.ly/33d6Zw5

01.01.2022 Friends - way back in 2009 I travelled to Afghanistan and met some extraordinary people doing incredibly brave work. It is a powerful, fascinating and frankly, downright excellent read. Join us online for what will be a heartfelt discussion... https://bit.ly/33095Ab... In this piece by Sanaz in today's BroadAgenda .. she ponders whether or not anything has changed since she first arrived in Afghanistan to film a doco about women and the hideous practice of self-immolation.
