24.01.2022 Couple of April 2018 born ewe lambs that we think have show potential. Sired by Brocburn 140435 a son of Kaya 100990 they have that bit of star quality that sets them apart.

24.01.2022 Show season over for 2018 & Brocburn didnt do too badly. This will be our last show season as after close to 19 years Jo & I are thinking of dispersing the stud early next year.

23.01.2022 Rams that shed well always look good. Some of the boys that will be looking for new homes in 2018 enjoying the morning sun on Christmas eve in Tassie. 14 degrees and a cool wind at time of posting. Merry Xmas from Brocburn :).

23.01.2022 Brocburn 150062 won Champion Dorper ram at the 2017 Launceston Royal Show. However plagued with financial woes and lack of patronage, 2017 may well be the last Launceston Royal Show. Brocburn was the first stud to show dorpers in Tasmania at the Launceston Royal in 2009 and that first show was also Jos and my introduction to showing sheep, so it will be sad to see it go. Found an old photo from our first 2009 show of Brocburn 080225, Champion Dorper ewe that year.

21.01.2022 Love being able to see the ewes from the garden when theyre in the creek paddock. Going to have to try and get some photos with the real camera sometime instead of just the mobile.

20.01.2022 Good side of most frosty mornings in July is the fine afternoon that follows. Looks like this ewe Joanna photographed is smiling too :)

20.01.2022 All ewes gone a couple of weeks back :( apart from seven. After 20 years Jo decided she had to keep a handful :) . Congratulations to new owners Tom Meure and family. Still have some 2018 ram lambs which are growing out nicely & some Kaya semen in storage for sale. Wed like to thank Adrian & Rose for allowing us to use some of their best genetics over the years, the best dorper genetics available in Australia in our opinion. However, with such small numbers to breed with and select from now, on our current 50 acre retirement property, we have found it too difficult to continue to improve our flock and accordingly made the difficult decision to call it quits.

18.01.2022 Brocburn Dorper lambs in the snow, many years ago at our previous property at Upper Natone.

18.01.2022 Finally on the market! This should be a game changer for parasite control :) http://www.wormboss.com.au//bioworma-and-livamol-with-biow

17.01.2022 Always impresses me how different Dorpers are to most sheep breeds (and weve had a few over the years). Cutting firewood with chainsaw racket & tractor ticking over too, and rather than being at the other end of the farm the girls come over to check it out :)

17.01.2022 Tasmanian Dorper Sheep Society members wrapped up Agfest 2018 yesterday & what an amazing 3 days it was! Just short of 66,000 visitors celebrated Tasmanias premier agricultural field days with heaps of them flocking (pun intended) to the Dorper Society site. The weather very pleasant despite a forecast of storm & tempest for Friday & many times our marquee was chocka-bloc, with people dropping in right up to closing at 5pm every day, mainly I think as a result of the wonderful Tasmanian Country pre-Agfest Dorper feature, Mercury newspaper article on Friday & Thursday mornings ABC radio interview. Ran out of most of our Dorper Society promo material by Saturday lunch time! Worked out this is Jos & my 16th Agfest!

17.01.2022 Eleventh Avenue, site 1133 is where its all happening for dorper sheep at this years Agfest, Tasmanias premier agricultural field days. Call in for a chat and get the facts about this amazing easy care prime lamb sheep breed. :-)

16.01.2022 Strongly coloured sire throwing the occasional broken coloured lamb unfortunately. Ewe lamb too damn it! Will give someone a lovely commercial ewe I guess :(

15.01.2022 Wether lambs on the horizon. No big deal but I just liked this photo.

14.01.2022 Ewes & lambs doing what Dorpers do best! Heads down & eating :)

14.01.2022 This years A.I. lambs arrived this week handling the winter weather with no problems. Selecting our breeding stock over the past 17 years for Tasmanias cold climate has certainly paid off in lamb survival rates compared to when we started. Cracker of a frost and ewes loving their hay.

14.01.2022 Interesting. We select our Dorper stud replacements for lamb hair birth coats to ensure lamb survival in our cold, wet winters & bone to carry meat. Obviously other important criteria need to be addressed, but with so many traits to select for it is easy to lose sight of the basic functionality of the breed.

13.01.2022 Congratulations to Emma Purcell for winning Champion Dorper ram at this years Canberra show with Brocburn 150045. Well done!

13.01.2022 Had a great spontaneous ABC Northern Tasmania radio interview this morning at Agfest Field Days, Tasmania. Certainly created a lot of interest . Come and see us at site 1133 Eleventh Avenue Friday or Saturday! https://youtu.be/q_VY_713ysQ

12.01.2022 Dorper meatballs for dinner with field mushrooms and garden salad! Sooo good! All off the farm (apart from fetta cheese) :-)

11.01.2022 Geared up once again for Agfest 2018. Nice spread by Tasmanian Country with a lovely picture from last February 2017 of a young Brocburn 150062 leading his girls. http://tascountry.realviewtechnologies.com/#folio=60

11.01.2022 Wow! Congratulations once again, Emma Purcell, big day for you! Brocburn 150045 with his owner Emma Astbury Purcell.

10.01.2022 Lambing time again so got to have the cute pic.

09.01.2022 Brought a few of the boys in today for some pics for a potential client. They have been doing rather well!! Been a great season here in Tasmania for growing grass. Total contrast to last years record breaking drought.

08.01.2022 Middle of winter and run of heavy frosts with sunny arvos. Great weather for Brocburn dorper lambs

08.01.2022 Kaya "Rabada" 160921 - Champion 4 tooth ram, Senior Champion Ram, Grand Champion Ram and Supreme Dorper Exibit - 2018 National Dorper Show Toowoomba. And to hel...p the cause he has excellent performance figures being in the top 10% of Australian shedding breeds for Weaning weight, Post weaning weight, Post weaning fat cover, number of lambs weaning, Carcase dressing percentage, and SRC index. He is in the top 30% for Eye muscle depth and intramuscular fat. See more

08.01.2022 Desperately need a decent rain here in northern Tasmania. Started feeding hay today. Very early for us

07.01.2022 If youre from mainland Australia youd be forgiven if you think this is feral pig-rooting, but this is caused by crows (forest ravens in Tassie) turning over damaged pasture to get at grass-grubs (cockchafers). Last year & this year causing big problems if youre trying to grow grass.

06.01.2022 Joanna Lyall & Janet Ainscow at the Dorper Sheep Society of Australia Inc.s site for Agfest 2017, Tasmanias premier agricultural field days. Frosty start on the first day but was a lovely mild Tassie autumn day to follow. Heaps of interest in our amazing sheep breed as always! Agfest Field Days, Tasmania Dorper Sheep Society of Australia- Southern Region

05.01.2022 Always love to see Dorper lambs playing (and thats despite the freezing weather!) Means theyre healthy and when bred for Tasmanian conditions Dorpers are tough :)

05.01.2022 Used this young ram, Brocburn 150062 as one of our back up rams to this years A.I. program. His sire Brocburn 140441 was A.I. by Kaya 101114 who has thrown some lovely progeny for us. Thanks Adrian Veitch for the opportunity.

04.01.2022 Jo & I had a brilliant weekend attending a two day sheep dog training course at Lindsey & Rae Youngs property, Lewisham, run by Paul Macphail from Beloka Kelpies. Took our 9 month old kelpie pup Coffee, and we and she learned a lot in two days. The improvement in our pup and the other 25 to 30 kelpie and border collie pups and dogs (and their owners!) at the course was truly amazing. Well worth the effort :)

04.01.2022 Why we live where we live beautiful!

02.01.2022 Looking forward to this years A.I. lambs using semen from Kaya sires, Kaya 130153 (National Champion 2015) and Kaya 120727. Ewes due on 19th June & already looking big :)

01.01.2022 2011 ewe still productive with this years twins, a ewe & a ram lamb from A.I. Spot of black on point of shoulder on the ewe lamb is a nuisance but still allowable as stud should she grow out ok.
