24.01.2022 Finally into our last two weeks of harvesting cauliflowers on the winter block in some of the driest conditions we have ever seen, we should harvest about 70-80% which is not bad considering the conditions. The Diamond Back Moth went away early this year, probably because of the finish of canola early, they had no where to breed which means the end of those tiny little lime green/blue caterpillars that get into the broccoli heads. It will be nice not spending $100-$200 a week in fuel to run irrigation pumps

24.01.2022 Wishing all our customers, friends and family a wonderful and safe Christmas. Thank you for all your support during this difficult year and we wish you every success in 2021. We're sure next year will bring just as many challenges, but as we've seen this year, working together as a community we can beat anything, it's what makes Albany so special. Take care and stay safe

23.01.2022 Welcome to our office today, 9 degrees, 40mm rain, a dashing of icy hail and mud. Lots and lots of mud, happy days

22.01.2022 Finally past the shortest day of the year and some sunny days are making the garlic grow better, there is no taste like home grown garlic, cannot wait for November harvest

22.01.2022 From the moment you plant a seed, nature is out to destroy it. Consider these lettuce nearly at harvest, windy humid conditions come along and the plants can't move enough calcium through the leaves so they die turning the lettuce slimy. In one day a crop is destroyed, so it's ploughed in as mulch for the next crop, 4 months of work down the drain. We write this not so people feel sorry for us, because we have beautiful crops as well, but to give an insight of what happens on a farm, some times good, some times no so good. A farming life

20.01.2022 Saying goodbye to the disaster that was autumn winter 2021, never in my 35 years have we seen crop loses of 70-80% over a 5 month period. For those who say this is an Albany winter of old, this winter block has never failed until this year. One of Facebook's strengths is memories, by posting photos over time we'll be able to see if this is a cyclical or climate change based event. Always learning

19.01.2022 Another year another food safety audit done, now back to farming stuff.

18.01.2022 At Woolies today talking to customers about where and how Western Australia's amazing vegetables are grown and out of the blue the managers drop a gift basket on me to say thanks. Nice to be appreciated. Brad, why do you always look so bloody good in a photo, stop it!

18.01.2022 You know it's a La Nina year with a Polar Vortex when you have to plant in conditions like this, some one said to me, "Why don't you wait to it drys up?" well there is more rain forecast and if we didn't plant, the seedlings would be twice the size by next week and we would have no lettuce ready for new years eve #northernantarcticafarming

18.01.2022 2020 has been incredibly hard on some this year and it’s heartwarming to see hard working volunteers like Mr Kelly picking up donations for the Vinnies Christmas hampers. If you need help this year please don’t hesitate to ask one of Albany’s many amazing NGOs like Vinnies or Foodbank for help, no one should be hungry, especially at Christmas

16.01.2022 Today we farewelled Phillip Marshall of Torbay Asparagus who passed away last week. Talking to his son Bruce today, Phillip worked right to the end picking rhubarb. An amazing farmer, passionate environmentalist and wonderful mentor to the community, Phillip will be greatly missed. The service reminded me how much farmers sacrifice to produce food every day for people to eat, working 7 days a week, never getting overtime, sick days or public holiday overtime, extraordinary A job well done Mr Marshall, thank you! 16.01.2022 Regenerative farming, Food systems and the need to connect consumers with produces, Aboriginal land stewardship, Change, all themes for the Community Food Events Dialogue Studios event held at the City of Albany council recently. Amazing community members in Albany discussing big picture ideas with ground level personal solutions.

13.01.2022 Congratulations Sarah on winning the John Deere model tractor at today’s Dog Rock Fresh Food Fair. A big thanks to the Dog Rock store manager for drawing the raffle. Another day promoting WA Fruit & Veg to consumers

13.01.2022 You could be mistaken thinking it was still winter with all the bad weather we are having, but our spring flowers are telling a different story, loving the showers with bursts of sunshine. Wont be long and we will start ploughing our summer field

13.01.2022 A "Tale of two cities" last week as a tropical low combined with a front. To our colleagues in Perth, their cauliflowers were ruined by being painted red by the dust storms, whilst for us, we just survived the first 40mm of rain only to cop another 55mm on Friday all but destroying this patch. A farmers life

12.01.2022 Happy Wrensday This lovely photo taken by my wife birding_by_tania of Splendid Fairy Wrens eating the bugs off our cauliflower seedlings in the nursery

11.01.2022 It was great to have the guys from Woolworths Brooks Garden Albany come out for a visit today to see how we grow our broccoli. Sometimes we feel disconected about where our food comes from and how it is grown, we hope these field visits give you, the consumer, an idea how your food is grown. Happy farming

11.01.2022 Spring is well and truly here which means BUGS! aphids, thrips, caterpillars, the list is endless of bugs that want to eat our delicious crops. So time to bring in 200 hired help, we just love ladybirds and the way they clean up the fields, happy farming

10.01.2022 A massive shout out to all our amazing food sellers here in Albany. Whether I deliver at 5 in the morning or 9 at night the fresh food, back dock and night filler staff have continued to smile even though they themselves have had a hard time. Amazing people who are working around the clock, don't forget a few kind words from you could make their day, Thank you! happy farming

09.01.2022 We are constantly asked what chemicals can we use to control insects to which we say, always look for nature to provide a biological solution first. Start with rich healthy fertile soil so the plant gets of to a good start, healthy plants are far more resistant to pests and diseases. Then look to providing areas of flowers for predatory insects to breed up. Given the size of our farm flowers are hard to, do so we import Aphidius Wasps and Ladybirds to munch away on the aphids and other pest. And most importantly, if you do have to spray, use a soft chemical like DiPel for caterpillars, avoid broad spectrum biological sprays as these will also kill your beneficial insects. Happy farming

08.01.2022 Winter is a good time to work on our local branding

07.01.2022 The last of the plantings on the winter block enjoying some much needed rain. We have never seen a patch of broccoli having to endure so much, 5 frosts, 2 large hail events, rainfall down more than 250mm for the year leaving a water table 1 metre below where it should be. Going to be a interesting summer

07.01.2022 Picking the first chemical free baby from the field today, as mum would say,yum

06.01.2022 Attending the 25 Year anniversary of Foodbank WA in Albany, we were just in awe of the amazing work these incredible people do. Foodbank started in tin shed and two converted houses in 1994 in Belmont. In that time they have supplied 50 million kilograms of food to those in need, averaging 6 million meals a year of which Albany makes up 300,000 meals a year. They have a Schools Breakfast Program working with nearly 500 schools making sure 19,000 kids each week have breakfast. Please watch their video, and if you can help, I know they could really use the support. An amazing organisation and congratulations for 25 years of outstanding work. Video credit: Foodbank WA

04.01.2022 Brad busy harvesting fresh cauliflowers that were seeded in the middle of winter and have take nearly six months to grow. Although traditionally a winter crop, conventionally bred Dutch varieties grown with a careful balance of water to create a micro climate and careful additions of Calcium and Boron to prevent tip burn in the leaves allow us to grow this winter crop through our Australian summers. The sweet nutty flavour is perfect with sweetcorn, broccoli and beans for a quick a summer stir fry with egg noodles after a long day at the beach. Happy farming

03.01.2022 Wishing our wholesalers and you the customers a happy Christmas and all the very best for 2020. Our heartfelt thanks for your support throughout 2019, it is much appreciated. Take care, stay safe and happy farming

02.01.2022 A huge shout out to all the volunteer services preparing Christmas hampers for those who are doing it tough this Christmas, John Kelly here is picking up for Vinnes and it's been a pleasure to donate. Nobody should be hungry anytime and especially at Christmas, please if the chips are down this year, just drop into Vinnes or FOODBANK and I know the amazing team of volunteers will be only too happy to help

01.01.2022 A little bit of rain with some warm autumn days finally has the broccoli growing better again this week so you should see broccoli on in store special this week, happy farming
