25.01.2022 Thyroid Meds Won’t Address the Root Cause Autoimmunity is the most common cause of thyroid disorders and the symptoms are quite disruptive long before a diagnosis is made or a treatment offered by a conventional doctor. Treatment in the medical world is generally invasive surgery or medication, while it can address symptoms within 1 to 2 weeks, it can also lead to a long list of unpleasant side effects. ... Another concerning point about thyroid medication is that it does not address the underlying root causes that lead to the thyroid issue in the first place. Therefore further damage to the thyroid gland is potentially continuing to occur, plus swinging between hypo and hyperthyroid states can also become an issue. The functional medicine approach is quite different. Thorough testing and investigating is done to uncover root causes, and treatment is individualised to support healing so you feel better, experience little to no side effects and can sustain lasting results. Root causes of thyroid conditions are generally a combination of food sensitivities, nutrient depletion, intestinal permeability, a decreased ability to handle stress, a toxic load the body cannot manage, and chronic infections. Remission from a thyroid condition (often without meds) can be possible when we systematically address these root causes. How? By building a strong healthy foundation through resetting lifestyle habits, using food as medicine and with the help of carefully selected herbs and supplements to support the healing process from the root up. This is what we address in my Thyroid Reset 12 week (1-on-1) Program. Prices will be going up soon! Secure your place today to save! See more

24.01.2022 5 Markers to test if you have a thyroid condition. Thorough thyroid testing is a great place to start when you have (or suspect) a thyroid issue, but looking at nutrient deficiencies is also an integral part of investigating what could also be contributing to your thyroid condition. Below are the markers I like to be checking with my thyroid clients:... Iron Iodine Selenium Vitamin D Zinc Looking for support and guidance with your thyroid health? 23.01.2022 Magnesium and Your Thyroid I find magnesium deficiencies so common with my clients in clinic - thyroid condition or not. Stress (physical and psychological) is almost unavoidable in our modern day lifestyles.... What’s important to know is: Stress leads to the depletion of magnesium, which is needed for iodine utilisation by the thyroid gland. A magnesium deficiency may also worsen symptoms associated with Graves' disease. In most cases I come across, the person had a stressful period in their life in the lead up to their thyroid condition, and stress can also be a key trigger for thyroid flares. Studies have shown that those with low thyroid function who then supplemented with magnesium citrate had a drop in TSH levels. Alongside the magnesium, other key vitamins, minerals and stress management were implemented during the study for further support, resulting in reports of feeling better, having more energy, better sleep, less anxiety and less constipation. Keep in mind that with holistic treatments results don’t always happen overnight - it takes time for the body to find its balance while we give it the right environment to do so. Eating a diet rich in magnesium foods can help (think green leafy veggies), while being mindful to avoid foods that cause inflammation in the digestive tract as this results in reduced magnesium absorption from the nutrient foods you do eat. And it goes without saying, addressing the root cause of your stress as well as daily stress management will be beneficial all round for your health See more

22.01.2022 Thyroid Meds Treat The Symptoms, Not The Root Cause Do you feel better since being on your thyroid medication? Has your doctor told you that your thyroid is functioning fine and that they will just monitor it?... Although you may feel better once taking thyroid medication, the problem is that these drugs don't address the root cause of your thyroid condition which can lead to side effects and other health problems in the long run. (and nobody wants that, right!) If the underlying triggers are not addressed, they will still be affecting the health of the thyroid and can increase the risk of a relapse. Imagine you’re in a rowboat and it has holes in it and the water is starting to fill the boat. You can use a bucket to scoop the water out, but if you’re not looking for the holes and mending them, then the water will inevitably end up back in the boat, you will end up tired from continually scooping the water out and the boat will eventually sink. Thyroid conditions don’t just happen. It’s not just bad luck or genetics. There are a number of things that contribute to thyroid dysfunction and when these underlying causes are addressed the thyroid can heal and rebalance, and in many cases eliminate the need for synthetic thyroid hormones. Need help addressing the root causes of your thyroid condition? Pop over to my DMs and book your clarity call today. All my consults are online, so you can access my support from wherever you are. Remember, the healing is worth it and you are worth your healing. xx See more

22.01.2022 Do you have a Morning Routine? I used to think ‘pfft’ to morning routines and preferred to just do what I felt each morning. But since implementing a morning routine I have found that my days flow and feel so much better, and I have more chance of showing up as the best version of myself. Having a morning routine sets a ripple effect throughout the rest of your day. It is about prioritising and looking after YOU FIRST. ... If I check my phone first (connecting to the external world) I know (through experience) that I am less productive, and on a lower vibrational frequency throughout my day. I am more grumpy, reactive, have less clarity with the possibility to make not so great choices for me and my health. I am also way more stressed and way less productive, resulting in self-disappointment by the end of my day. But when I get up and connect with myself first, it changes my state of being to a higher vibrational state and I feel more in alignment and am much more productive throughout my day. I also make better choices for my health and well-being, and my interactions are much more enjoyable too. My morning routine consists of - breathing/meditation, visualise how I want my day to run, (all while in bed), get out of bed and drink 500ml of water, move my body, stretch, gratitude, earth while having my morning bone broth, get some sunshine then check my plan for the day (written the night before) and begin my day with presence, gratitude, energy, clarity and a high vibrational state. Fill your cup first and give from the overflow. You are worth it! Xx Let me know your favorite morning routines in the comments below. #ipreview via @preview.app See more

19.01.2022 EARTHING Earthing (AKA grounding) is putting the body (the skin) in direct contact with the earth. Indigenous cultures have practiced earthing for millennia and in recent years it has been gaining popularity as more people realise the benefits, but also how much we have lost daily contact with nature. The modern way of living (always wearing shoes and being above ground in homes or offices) means we are losing touch with the healing benefits of the earth’s natural el...ectrical force. The human body is electrical first and chemical second. When our skin comes into contact with the ground it acts as a conductor receiving the earths negative charges that create a stable internal bioelectrical environment for the normal functioning of all body systems. Some protective health benefits of daily earthing include: immune support relieve stress & reduce cortisol boost energy improve sleep reduce inflammation relieve pain and muscle soreness counteract harmful EMF effects Grounding is super simple, completely free and has no consequences, only the opportunity to benefit your overall health and well-being. All it requires is your bare feet and your curiosity to give it a go. Remember, the earth knows what you need to be healed, all you need to do is stop by and say hello - daily. I invite you to earth every day for one week and pop a comment below to let me know how you feel after. See more

16.01.2022 The importance of having balanced thyroid hormones The hormones produced by the thyroid gland affects virtually every cell, tissue and organ in the body, including functions such as; Energy Body temperature... Heart rate Metabolism Mood Hair growth Digestion Liver function Eyesight Nervous system So it makes sense that if your thyroid is not functioning optimally you can also feel out of balance! When out of balance, the thyroid gland can either produce too much hormone (called hyperthyroidism) or not enough hormone (called hypothyroidism), resulting in your body using energy faster or slower than it should. TYPICAL SYMPTOMS: Typical symptoms of HYPERthyroidism (overactive thyroid) are weight loss, fast heart rate, high irritability/nervousness, muscle weakness and tremors, infrequent menstrual periods, sleep problems, eye irritations and heat sensitivity. Typical symptoms of HYPOthyroidism (underactive thyroid) are weight gain, slower heart rate, fatigue, more frequent and stronger menstrual periods, forgetfulness, dry skin and hair, hoarse voice and intolerance to cold. In addition, hypothyroidism is often accompanied by an enlargement of the thyroid gland known as goitre. Thyroid conditions are becoming more and more prevalent, with approximately 200 million people affected worldwide by some form of thyroid disease. The good news is that you can heal and feel better. Which thyroid symptom do you struggle with the most? See more

16.01.2022 Yes, The Pill Does Affect Your Thyroid Let’s chat about how... The birth control pill not only depletes essential nutrients required by your thyroid but can also interfere with thyroid hormones on various levels. For example the pill affects zinc, which is required with selenium to produce thyroid hormone and conversion from T4 (inactive) to T3 (active). Additionally, zinc aids in getting the thyroid hormone and cell receptor to communicate.... The pill has a negative effect on more than just minerals. It can deplete crucial B Vitamins too, which are required to synthesize thyroid hormones, (plus SO many other uses within the body) And that’s not all! The pill elevates Thyroid Binding Globulin (TBG), which when this happens thyroid hormones are not available for use by the cell. So even if you correct nutrient deficiencies and synthesise enough thyroid hormone, a majority of it will already be bound and not available to your cells. And guess what, every cell in your body requires thyroid hormone. Birth control pills can rob us of our health in many other ways too: Suppresses the body’s natural production of Oestrogen and Progesterone Risk of Oesteoporosis Deplete gut flora Imbalance to the immune system Increase risk to certain cancers Decrease sexual drive Impair ability to build muscle AND if that list isn’t bad enough, the pill is inflammatory. And guess what else is also inflammatory? #Autoimmune disease. Inflammation also takes your T4 and converts it to RT3 (Reverse T3), and 1if it is elevated you will feel tired. So what are some #contraception alternatives? This is a personal choice, so I would advise doing your research and speaking with your health professional. One possible option is the Fertility Awareness Method. Some good accounts to follow regarding fertility awareness are - @fertilitycharting @fertilityfriday If you’re considering coming off the pill it is worth considering having thorough lab testing to evaluate the complete picture of your health, as well support your body in the process (ie. diet & lifestyle) See more

15.01.2022 Gut health has a huge impact on your health, including the health of your thyroid. Which is why ensuring your gut health game is strong is a good place to start to heal your thyroid. And the BONUS is that you’ll notice sooo many other health benefits too! Here’s 3 things to stop doing to start healing.... 1Avoid Gluten - leads to intestinal permeability 2Avoid Dairy - increases inflammation in the digestive tract and the thyroid gland 3Remove Alcohol - can cause intestinal permeability and has a significant effect Hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, affecting almost all aspects of the functioning of the thyroid gland. @ Sunshine Coast, Queensland See more

12.01.2022 Imagine this day when: You are sleeping better You have more energy You see reduced antibodies on your next pathology test and you’re on your way to remission! Well I’m here to tell you this is absolutely possible.... There are a lot of moving pieces and various triggers with thyroid conditions that may need to be addressed in order to get your condition into remission. (sorry, there isn’t one magic thing that will fix it overnight for you) Here are some suggestions to help you find answers and aid with sleep. Get thorough Thyroid Testing. Just testing TSH, T4 tells us very little about how the thyroid is functioning or how active the autoimmune component is (if present). Full thyroid panel (FT3, FT4, TSH, RT3, TPOAb, TGAb, TSHrAb) You also want to look at common nutrient deficiencies in thyroid conditions, such as: Selenium, Iodine, Vitamin D, B12, Ferritin, Thiamine (B1), Vitamin A, Zinc, Magnesium. If your GP doesn’t support these tests, I suggest finding a practitioner who does. Give your nervous system some love (meditate, ground, breathe) - this will aid sleep and help reduce antibody count (how active the autoimmune is), which is often triggered by stress (oh, and note that lack of sleep is also a form of stress) Got questions? Need more personalised support? My THYROID RESET program is a 12 week program where we cover all this and more so you have more energy to feel like yourself again. If you’re struggling with your thyroid symptoms, feeling tired and overwhelmed, and would love the support to overcome this (from someone who has been there and understands exactly what it takes), drop into my DMs to schedule your FREE discovery call and see if this program is a fit for you. 12.01.2022 Is your thyroid issue due to a communication issue? The body is a complex set of systems that communicate to each other to keep you functioning, happy and healthy. But sometimes the communication lines can breakdown resulting in a dysfunction of one or more systems. Let’s talk about the communication line with the thyroid... Sometimes the body needs more thyroid hormones, and sometimes it needs less. To make the exact right amount of hormones, the thyroid gland needs the help of another gland: the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland talks to the thyroid gland advising whether to release more or less hormones into the bloodstream. And if we go back one step, it is the hypothalamus who sends the signals to the pituitary gland. This communication line is called the HPT (hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid) axis. (for my fellow nerds ) Activation of the HPT-axis requires the HYPOTHALAMUS to send thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) to stimulates the PITUITARY GLAND to release thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) that in turn activates the THYROID to produce and release thyroid hormones, including thyroxin (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3) Therefore if there is a breakdown in the communication of the HPT axis, the thyroid may not be getting the signals to to keep thyroid levels steady. So what can disrupt this communication pathway? There can be many causes, but two relevant ones are (1) high stress and cortisol levels and (2) inflammation from things such as infections and poor gut health. This is one reason why focusing on managing stress and improving gut health can really help rebalance the thyroid. Slow down, breathe and rest. (A message from your thyroid )

11.01.2022 Have you had your full thyroid function tests done and the results have come back all within range, but you’re experiencing typical thyroid symptoms? You may have what’s called, cellular hypothyroidism. So what is cellular hypothyroidism?... In cellular hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland may be making sufficient thyroid hormone, there may be plenty of hormones in your blood, but the thyroid hormone is not getting into the cell and stimulating thyroid receptors and metabolism. In this scenario you will have hypothyroid symptoms but normal lab values. What can cause this to happen? Chronic stress and high cortisol - the increased cortisol affects the conversion of T4 to T3, increasing reverse T3 levels (rT3) which competes with T3 at the receptor site. This then causes issues with the T3 not getting into the cell, and you start to experience thyroid symptoms. This can be the beginning of a thyroid condition. So whether you have normal’ thyroid results or if you are taking thyroid hormone and your thyroid symptoms are not improving, it would be advisable to check your rT3 levels to see if your T4 is being shunted to rT3. Other causes can be nutritional deficiencies, gut or stealth infections and toxins. When underlying causes are addressed the symptoms can resolve. 11.01.2022 7 Powerful Tips To Master New Habits in Order to Heal Your Thyroid! Frustrated with your thyroid health? Feel like you’re taking 1 step forward & 2 steps back? To make progress with your healing you need consistency, and the trick to consistency is to create healthy habits.... Here’s some tips to get you there: TIP 1: Get clear on your VISION & your WHY In order to create a new habit, you must be clear on the vision you are chasing and why. Create a vision board. Write a reminder on your bathroom mirror so you see it each day. Get excited about moving towards your vision. TIP 2: ANCHOR it to an existing habit Choose an existing daily behavior (eg. eating) that you will attach to the new habit you're building (eg. a breathing exercise) TIP 3: COMMIT to it for 30 days & be CONSISTENT. Don't miss a day. This forms the new habit. The commitment to form a new habit is not easy. This is why my clients are successful as they have my support when the going gets tough. TIP 4: PLAN for obstacles. If you’re a snacker, don’t have the snacks in your pantry. Know your triggers. If you end up cheating yourself when you are mad or sad, find something that can help move that emotion in a healthy way (eg. journalling or exercise) This is a good time to revisit your WHY TIP 5: Create ACCOUNTABILITY This is one of my key roles in coaching my clients - holding them accountable while providing the support to stay on track TIP 6: REWARD milestones - NB: the key here is to celebrate with an activity or thing that does NOT include food. (rewarding with food is an unhealthy habit) TIP 7: Make it a part of your core IDENTITY For a habit to fully form it requires a shift of mindset. A belief that the habit is part of what makes you you. One of my fave things to do with clients is celebrate their successes If you’ve tried to take steps to heal your thyroid but feel you are not making progress, and you’re ready to create thyroid healing habits, then my THYROID HEALING program is for you! DM me to book your clarity call today. See more

08.01.2022 Coffee and Your Thyroid Do you drink coffee and have a thyroid condition? ... For some people, coffee may interfere with the absorption of thyroid medication so it is recommended to take thyroid medication away from your morning coffee. Coffee lowers the intestinal absorption of both inorganic and organic compounds, and seems to physically interact with thyroid medications, as well as reduce your ability to absorb the nutrients from food food leading to nutrient deficiencies. Some foods such as soy and grapefruit can also affect the absorption of thyroid medications, so taking your thyroid medication on an empty stomach is advisable for best absorption. How long should you space your thyroid medication? Approximately 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your ability to absorb your medication. Because caffeine increases alertness and triggers the release of adrenaline, it may worsen common Graves’ disease symptoms of anxiety, nervousness and heart palpitations. Coffee also has a laxative effect caused by the release of gastrin, a type of hormone that stimulates movement in the digestive tract, exacerbating nutrient deficiencies and weight loss issues. So if experience these symptoms, avoiding or limiting your coffee intake may be a good option. #ipreview via @preview.app See more

04.01.2022 Diet Alone Will Not Fix Your Thyroid When I first started my thyroid healing journey I was so focused on what I was eating, thinking that food alone would make or break my ability to heal. While I was studying to become a naturopath (full time while working full time) I would regularly check my full thyroid panel. If my results reflected that my antibodies were elevated (which indicates how active the autoimmune is) I would automatically think it was something I had eaten... that had caused it. At one point, due to prolonged elevated stress levels, my thyroid antibodies were extremely high and I thought I would have to reduce my stress by going part-time at work or part-time in my studies. Neither of these ended up being viable options, so I decided to manage my stress differently be creating another option - daily meditation. It was a game changer for me, and only 7 weeks later when I retested, my thyroid antibodies had dramatically reduced! The #meditation app I used and loved was #Ananda by @deepakchopra . You can choose the length of your meditation, the topic and the background music. Although food choices are important when healing your thyroid, there are so many other important components to unlock healing for optimal health. See more

04.01.2022 Did you know that water quality matters to your thyroid? The water that comes out of the tap is full of lots of nasty toxins like heavy metals, bacteria, fluoride, chlorine, pesticides, hormones and pharmaceuticals. Drinking water straight from the tap increases the toxic load on the body due to all these chemicals. What does this mean for your thyroid?... The toxins found in tap water have an affinity for the thyroid gland and can disrupt your hormone balance and thyroid function. This is why drinking water from a quality water filter is a fundamental component thyroid health. Note: A Brita water filter is not going to remove the above mentioned toxins. So what water filter should you be using? I suggest a quality water filter like @southerncrosspottery including their fluoride filter, or the Zazen water filter (the glass base option). IMPORTANT: You want to avoid plastic due to the toxic and hormone disrupting effects of the chemicals in plastic. Toxins are NOT friends with your thyroid or your health. It’s also important to note that BPA-free does NOT equal toxin-free. So make sure your water bottle is also glass or stainless steel. Health is a priority right now, and that extends to your thyroid. Tag someone you care about below who needs this information. 02.01.2022 Thyroid Disease - Is Remission Really Possible? The short answer is, YES. Firstly, an early diagnosis increases the chance of remission as the antibodies have had less time to damage the thyroid gland. But if you have had your thyroid condition for some time (with high antibodies) you may need to stay on medication but you will still be able to reach remission with regard to antibodies.... There is not one thing that can get your thyroid condition into remission. Everyone is different and multiple changes work together to support the healing process. Lifestyle changes like diet and certain supplementation can help. Optimising your thyroid levels helps. Reducing and managing stress helps. Avoiding illness and toxins helps. And when you find the winning combination you will sing in the shower and shake your booty in the kitchen! (maybe even with a pineapple on your head ) Your health is worth it. You are worth it.
