19.01.2022 Merry Xmas! A little appreciation post while the spirit is festive. I want to thank these two loopers for the opportunity extended to me this year.... Cracking into the Yanchep/two rocks market has been a game changer for my business this year, and these two really believe in me and and what I do. They may look nuts (and they are) but they’re very solid operators and some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Big things are coming for 2021
19.01.2022 SAVE THE DATE On Thursday the 11th of February at 7pm, I will be presenting this seminar at the Yhub in yanchep. Have you set yourself goals and not achieved them? ... Do you cave at every setback? Does it all seem too hard and have you given up on yourself? In this 90min presentation, I’ll be discussing why our current goal setting systems may be setting you up for failure, and how real behaviour change takes place. Drawing on my back ground in the fitness industry, and talking openly and honestly about my own success and failure in my sporting endeavours and career, I hope to shed some light on the tools you need to become a better version of yourself. Direct msg me for tickets - only 30 spots!
15.01.2022 There is a trend in the fitness industry to push people towards 6/8/12 week transformational challenges. I know, because I too have pushed the same thing in the past. However as my own training methodology expands and grows, I am seeing the fallacies that pushing this message on a constant basis can create. Unrealistic goals are set, and instant gratification is desired.... Now don’t get me wrong, these challenges can often be a fantastic spring board towards a healthier lifestyle. However, what happens when the 6 or 8 weeks is up? A steady fall back to old habits, and the results often don’t stick. The above pictures show my client Helena over a 3 year journey. As you can see she has maintained great results through the creation of new behaviours. These behaviours became habits, and she has consistently made progress, even being the busy mum that she is! Create a new behaviour Turn the behaviour into a habit Reap the rewards
15.01.2022 If you’re still using the old SMART goal setting system, it may be time to question if it is still serving you. With close to 92% of people that set goals failing to meet their desired outcome, we need to question our methodology. SMART goal setting forces is to be incredibly specific with our outcomes, in the end setting us up for developing a pass or fail mindset. We either pass or fail on attaining the outcome.... Constantly failing to achieve an unrealistic specific metric causes us to develop a fixed mindset around the task, and effects our perceived ability about the difficulty of the task. Is there a better way? Setting up a system of strong values, focusing on behaviour change, and designing new habits, will start to pave a pathway to achieve anything you set your mind to. It’s time to start questioning where we get our information from, particularly at this time of year as we all do some self assessment.
13.01.2022 The Countdown is on Learn a better way to set goals and achieve them If you’re sitting on the fence about getting a ticket, it’s time to send me a DM!
10.01.2022 Soooo.... HAPPY NEW YEAR! This year has forced us all to change in ways we never thought possible. It definitely required all of us to be more resilient, resourceful and hopefully more grateful.... The above quote resonated with me the first time I read Victor Frankls Mans search for meaning. It seems more meaningful for me now more than ever. 2020 although challenging, allowed us to adapt to new stimulus. Showing us how to really change when the need presented itself. So as you get bombarded over the coming days about your goals and your need to smash them, it may be a good time to start asking better questions - Do you need another goal? Or do you need to challenge your belief systems, change your negative behaviours, and challenge some old thought habits? 2021 can hold incredible new opportunities, or it could be yet another that passes you by while you continue to play the victim. Your choice - you hold the power to change anything you wish about yourself.
09.01.2022 So I haven’t discussed my training in a long time. Mainly because.... there hasn’t been any My last powerlifting comp was February 2020. We then all went into Covid lock down and I started surfing and swimming. This change in routine, although amazing for my mental health, led to me acquiring a serious bout of shoulder bursitis- it’s been so bad I can’t lift my daughter on my right side Everything I enjoy seems to aggravate it.... So I purchased a MTB to try and enjoy exercise outside, and I’ve been taken back to my youth I raced MTB at a state level during my teens, it’s a lot of fun. So I’ve decided to set my sights on racing the @capetocapemtb solo. 4 days and roughly around 250km long, through the best parts of the south west of WA. I’ve employed the services of @timfrey__ via some great recommendations to help me build up my conditioning capacity, and manage a few things around my injury. Along with nutrition from @dan_teamecto and finally having some rehabilitation from Adam @physical_solutions I’m hoping to return to barbell sports in the next 12 months. For now though, let’s see if I can build an engine and get my health back on track.
04.01.2022 The RAS filter The Reticular activating system is a network of neurons found in the brain stem, that act as a filter of information between our sensory systems and our conscious mind. It helps to filter out the noise from our environment , and is responsible for pushing important and specific information to us. It’s programmable and pushes any information we deem relevant to us via our conscious mind.... For example, when we decide a certain piece of information is important (such as looking skinny) , we start to scan our environment and look for more of that specific information (ie lots of skinny people at the gym). This can be negative or positive in its impact. Consider this when you start to bombard yourself with negative body imagery via social media, television and magazines. Once you have decided that those images are important to you, you start seeing more of this imagery as you go about your day. We can change the information being filtered towards us by understanding this system, and changing our sources of information. This may require you to look at your social media or television habits, what you view each day online, and decide if it’s making a negative or positive impact on your mental well being. We have far more control on our ability to see positivity in our world than we ever even realised.
03.01.2022 In this age of unqualified fitness professionals offering services they probably shouldn’t, then its a good time to discuss Nutrition planning. Nutrition is a science (just like exercise), so a personal trainer can go and do a degree in nutrition at university, and once completed, can write detailed plans for clients. There’s some other special areas such as nutritional medicine, however the first thing to ask your trainer is Are you qualified to offer me this service? Neve...r feel like you can’t ask for some clarity on certifications (I mean you’d like to know your dentist has got one right?!) Trainers can offer you some nutritional guidance, however it needs to be in accordance with our Australian dietary guidelines. As soon as a trainer starts detailing specifics around food choices and intake, they’re outside of their scope of practice. Being qualified and staying inside our scope of practise as fitness professionals allows us to be correctly covered under insurance policies, and ensures you as the consumer gets a safe and effective service. Your trainer may also hold a ISSN certification, which will allow basic meal planning and guidance. This is a well respected certification and offers a more entry level option for trainers who don’t wish to complete a degree. Always question were you’re getting your information from, and if you can’t find any qualifications in a bio link or website, it’s usually a red flag (us trainers love to tell you how qualified we are ). @dan_teamecto and his merry group are my go to crew for my clients nutrition needs, and my own for the last 4 years. @kyle_sherriff I’ve worked with for 5 years, he is a well educated nice guy who is doing great things for his clients. I love @mikkiwescombe content, as well as @katmtorre_coach - and for performance related nutrition it’s hard to go past @harrietwalkernutrition I also love what @criticalfitnessedu is doing - keeping people honest Check these guys out for your nutritional content needs
