25.01.2022 I was gifted this beautiful and very soft knitted blanket during the week. The colours could not be more perfect! Big thank you to my dear friend Mandi for sending this to me from Perth... just in time for our cold, wintery weekend here in Adelaide .... If you think something like this has a place in your home too, head over to @mandi_crochet_creations and give her page a follow
25.01.2022 DFES Heritage Museum sure has some nice design detail! This place is on Murray Street in Perth and is a great education centre. They allow kids to climb on fire trucks and learn all about fire safety. As you know, firefighters are working relentlessly around the country. Once the fires ease, if youre in Perth check this place out even if you are a big kid!
24.01.2022 Before you do anything... It certainly pays to have a chat One thing I’m super passionate about is getting the right information to people at the very start of their home build / renovation project.... Building a new home or renovating an existing home is a big financial investment, as well as a decent time investment. Once the process starts, most people would prefer it go as smoothly as possible. However, how many horror stories do you hear about? I hear about them weekly and it breaks me Generally the downfall has been due to a lack of knowledge around process and/or a mismatch of expectation versus delivery due to lack of adequate communication, especially at the beginning. I would be well off if I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say If only I knew... No matter what type of project, the building process has a lot of different steps with involvement from several different parties. Knowing who gets involved at what time and gaining an understanding for realistic costs and time frames BEFORE you begin is certainly advantageous so that planning is improved and the entire experience becomes more rewarding than stressful. I sat down with Shane at the start of his journey and was able to give him all sorts of information so that he was better equipped moving forward. He obviously found it very worthwhile and I was happy to have made a difference. I’d love to be able to help you too should you be at the beginning of your building journey. It takes one quick message to get the conversation started.
24.01.2022 The mission of Bronza Designs is to inspire and educate within the field of residential building. My aim is to help inform people about the processes involved so they can plan ahead and better anticipate their journey. My aim is to have integrity around costs, timelines, client expectations vs what is practicable.... My aim is to share previous work for inspiration but create something unique for the next person, collaboratively working with my client to achieve this. My aim is to help navigate your building experience with ease, with a tailor made process and a tailor made solution purely to meet your needs. This is what drives me on the daily
24.01.2022 Above Counter Basins - some handy factors to consider These basins are the type that fully sit on top of a vanity bench top, usually to be a design feature in a bathroom. Above counter basins come in many sizes and shapes which can hinder functionality if thought is not given to how the basin is incorporated with other elements of the design.... Here are my top tips to consider... * Who is going to be using the bathroom and what height is desirable for the lip of the basin? Does this mean the bench top needs to be lowered so that the basin isn’t too high? Can the vanity even be lowered? If it is an ‘off the shelf’ floor mount vanity then probably not. * What type of tapware will be paired with the basin? If a wall mount set is chosen then there needs to be enough clearance between the top of the basin and the tapware - will this push the mirror up too high for shorter people using the room...? * How do you feel about cleaning? Does your basin taper down at an angle that will make cleaning tricky? * Proportion is also a good one to consider. How deep is the bench top and is there enough room around the basin for tapware and easy cleaning? Does the basin work with surrounding elements? This bathroom features a basin mixer (bench mount) tap to allow the mirror to sit as close as possible to the top of basin due to a window sitting just above the mirror. 24.01.2022 Instead of working FOR my clients, I prefer to see the relationship as a collaboration. After all, it is them living in their home and not me! By collaborating, I learn more about how the client lives and what their requirements are so I can make the necessary suggestions to enhance their lifestyle. Sometimes it takes a bit of back and forth to get things right and that is totally ok.... Ive worked with a really diverse range of clients over the years. Each client has their own unique style, which is awesome because it helps provide versatility to my role as well as keeping me on my toes while we discover new ways to achieve desired outcomes. Forever grateful for my clients
24.01.2022 Its not about what is on trend. Its not about what looks picture perfect. Its not even about what your friends or family will think (although the compliments are nice!)... Really its about what works for you and your family. What colour, patterns or textures speak to you. What is going to make your life easier. What will create the ultimate function for the way YOU do your days. What will provide longevity for a growing family, both now and in the future (if thats the intention). Homes are for living in. Homes are for feeling safe, comfortable and inspired in. What speaks to you? Featured project designed by myself. Built byBrilliant SA. Aaron Citti
24.01.2022 Styling is so much fun to do Especially for a photoshoot. It is so easy to get carried away and want to put all available decor in the room.... However you can certainly over-style. The more items in the space, the more crowded or distracting those items can become. In a bathroom such as this one (sorry... youll have to wait for the finished photos coming soon!) there is plenty of interest in colours, patterns & textures already, so placing too many decorative items wouldnt take long to have the space feel busy and uncomfortable. Who remembers Project Hex part I (bathroom) and part II (laundry)...?? We finally got to photograph these beauties today and I can confidently say they are stunning! My favourite part of revisiting my clients after theyve been living in their new spaces for awhile is the feedback about how much their lifestyle has improved having done the reno. So it was warm fuzzies all round today! Music to a Designers ears
23.01.2022 Dodgy knees. Frail bodies. Ambulant assistance. Storage. Shaving legs with ease.... A spot to place your wine glass! All reasons enough to integrate a bench into your bathing area Considerations include: * Having ample space around the seating so it remains functional * Edge/corner details that look good but are also safe (not too sharp). * Adequate water proofing if tiled or clad * Sufficient but subtle fall on top so that water can run off but your body wash stays put! Other advantages of a shower bench include having another element to add to the overall aesthetic of the room and concealing any obtruding unwanted structure. 23.01.2022 Textured tiles can be a subtle or bold way of adding interest to a room, depending on the tile selection. Used in the right application, textured tiles can add elegance, drama or fun! Firstly, what is a textured tile...? I explain this because sometimes people get textured tiles mixed up with patterned tiles. Pattern refers to what is visible on the tile whether that be an artisan print, a marble vein or a terrazzo stone look. While texture refers to how the tile feels - bump...y, rough, undulating, gritty etc. A texture can create a pattern though! For example, the tile in this picture is a smooth white gloss textured tile with no printed pattern, however the texture creates a visible leaf-like pattern. When a tile is heavily textured (with notable variation within the texture) some important considerations include: Running textured tiles between internal corners (wall to wall or in a niche) will best conceal tile edges against the flat adjoining wall Textured tiles finishing on external edges will likely mean a tile trim will need to be used as not all textured tiles dont mitre well or sometimes not at all! Consider this trim may detract from the desired look. Cutting textured tiles isnt ideal. Depending on how the tile is made, the edges will likely chip or crumble during cutting. Consider how silicone will look with a textured tile and whatever it adjoins... no one likes a messy thick silicone bead so this requires some forethought. The featured texture tile adds a glamorous level of interest to a small laundry, helping the tight space appear bright and spacious. Laundry project designed by myself for Brilliant SA.
22.01.2022 Big thanks to @revolutionroofing for the amazing pizzas yesterday during the @b_d_a_a_ luncheon. Some exciting things are happening at RR which means our clients have access to evolving quality products and extensive selection when selecting their roof and wall cladding for new building projects!! Great work guys and thanks again
21.01.2022 A great article by Brilliant SA around realistic timelines for renovation projects, bathrooms in particular.
19.01.2022 Custom Open Shelving. I love using well constructed shelving for a couple of different reasons... Shelves offer a nice design element in a space both in the chosen material itself and the opportunity to decorate with a pot plant or other decor.... Shelves are a great solution for utilising corners, both internal and external for seamless cabinetry design. Shelves provide storage for day to day items that get used often. This featured laundry uses shelves to mimic the bench top where the end of the joinery run comes up to a chamfered (angled) wall. Designed by myself at Brilliant SA. Built by @brilliant_sa
19.01.2022 Island sinks... have they run their course...? I seem to be seeing a trend reversal of late when it comes to kitchen sinks in island benches. In my experience, the number one driver for people having a sink in their island is to have an open outlook while doing dishes and not be facing a wall. There is also a social element whilst entertaining or keeping up communication with family while cleaning up after dinner.... However, now that this trend has been around for awhile, the impracticality of the island sink has become apparent and not everyone is wanting to have a revolving dish pit as the central focus of their kitchen. Where young children (or perhaps busy adults) are concerned, there is also higher risk of dishes falling off the island ends, obviously creating a safety hazard too. Not everyone has ample wall space in their kitchen, especially with open plan living being so popular. So there isn’t always room for a sink, a cooktop, a pantry and fridge space to occupy the available walls space, therefore the sink is the preferred choice to be ousted to the island. There are many ways in which design can provide a solution to this conundrum! In this featured kitchen, a simple raised island feature has maintained the design’s clean lines while masking the sink’s work zone. It also protects items on the end of the island where the sink has been placed to maximise the remainder of the island for other family tasks. Designed by myself at Brilliant SA. 17.01.2022 Backlit mirrors and mirrors with integrated lighting are really growing in popularity. We are seeing many more ready made options on the shelves for consumers. The reason for this is when light is evenly distributed in front of you, rather than coming down from a light source above, you eliminate shadows to your face and attain better practicality. This is especially important in rooms lacking good natural light.... Aside from easier application of make up, or facial grooming, lighting around the mirror also adds a gorgeous touch to your bathroom! This decorative mirror was chosen to match the vanity handles. We customised the mirror by adding an LED strip light behind before mounting to the wall. The soft glow is a perfect finishing touch for this beautiful new ensuite addition Built by Brilliant SA.
16.01.2022 The building industry is in full swing post Covid-isolation with a lot of families using their saved travel money to instead renovate the very homes theyve been force-hibernating in for a good portion of this year. Add a stimulus package to the mix and those of us working in residential construction are definitely being kept on our toes at the moment! After a busy week, Im dreaming of hopping into a big, warm, bubbly bath such as this one pictured. ... What have you noticed at home during Covid that isnt quite as functional as you may like...? Or perhaps some parts of the home are looking a little tired...? Happy Sunday everyone Featured project designed by me for Brilliant SA. Built by Brilliant SA.
16.01.2022 TIMELINES. This stunning vanity will be getting installed in an upcoming project and Im pretty excited! But like my client, Ill have to wait until completion in the new year. The final quarter is a very busy time of year for the building industry. A lot of people dont realise just how much work is involved in the front end of any building/renovation project. To avoid disappointment, my best advice for anyone wanting a completed bathroom or kitchen renovation prior to Xmas 2...020 is dont leave it any later than early September to start making contact with designers or builders! By the time youve chosen your preferred professional, finalised a concept, finished selections, given the designer a chance to prepare documentation, prepare construction drawings, handover to site supervisor, schedule the job, order products in time... weeks have gone by. To allow yourself a stress free renovation process, I highly recommend engaging your specialist at least 3mths before you intend on starting demo. You want to give yourself a chance to consider all options if you are investing time and money in such an important project - no one likes to be rushed and this is where mistakes can and often do happen. 15.01.2022 Project Hex II The scenario before... an active family of four living in a big home with six bedrooms and just a small space for a washing machine in the garage The solution... a no brainer! 15.01.2022 Happy New Year everyone Ok, so I’m a couple of weeks late with that one... take it as an indication of how hectic the end of last year was I have so many amazing projects in the works and simply can’t wait to share them with you as they reach completion!... I have really enjoyed working with both my long standing and new clients. So this post is a big shout out to them... Thank you for making my job so enjoyable and cheers to all of your exciting renovation projects ahead! 14.01.2022 Open shelving (or cube storage) can be a really versatile design element in a laundry, mud room, or even an entry hall if big enough. These spaces are usually transitional and need to have belongings at the ready. So they are ideal for open shelving because you can optimise organisation as well as efficiency. Kids love it when they get their own pigeon hole for school bags.... Dad loves having somewhere to put his work boots at night and Mum loves that those boots can air out without being a trip hazard! Even the dogs loving having their toys and leads in a nice accessible place. Sometimes you can add decorative touches with baskets or ornamental features on every other shelf. Of course, you want to give thought to what you would use the shelving for prior to making your selection... the last thing you want is to create an unsightly dumping ground! But with some forward planning, open shelving can create a nice neat finish while offering handy placement of your day to day belongings. Featured laundry renovation has an open shelf above the hanging rail for larger picnic baskets and the baskets on shelves below are for pet possessions. Designed by myself for Brilliant SA. 12.01.2022 Skylights (or sky tubes or sky tunnels) are an incredible way of bringing natural light into the home. And these days, the quality of even the most basic of skylights is awesome. Some of my favourite places to install a skylight include; * Over a bathroom vanity... * Above a kitchen island * Right over the desk in your study * In a tight dark hallway * Anywhere else dark really! This featured bathroom has no windows, nor are there any lights turned on for the photo. You can see the abundance of light glaring through the skylights diffuser - it is so effective that the reflection in the shower screen and tiles makes it appear like there are multiple lights on... but that is all natural light from one space efficient, cost effective skylight! 10.01.2022 Building a new home, or renovating an existing (extensions/additions), is exciting! Often, this excitement can be a little or a lot tarnished once people get into the tedious process. It may help to be aware of whats involved in this process before you start, so you know what to expect and understand why it is quite lengthy. So heres a quick run down...... 1) DESIGN STAGE is where you work with your designer, builder or new home consultant to either modify your house off the plan or customise your home / renovation design. This can take weeks or months depending on the complexity of the build and also how decisive the client is. 2) WORKING DRAWINGS are where all design is formalised into industry standard drawings ready for round 1 of official applications. This can take a 1-3wks depending on the efficiency of the draftsperson. 3) BUILDING CONSENT / PLANNING APPROVAL is 1/3 of mandatory approvals required before you can start construction. This involves documentation being submitted to your council so they can ensure your design aligns with their Development Plan. This can be the most tedious wait, generally 6-8wks... however I have had a new home in planning for a max of 9mths! This is an extreme case and at the other end of the scale there is a thing called Residential Code. This may apply to new homes that meet specific requirements. Homes can be approved under Res Code within just a few weeks. 4) CERTIFICATION is 2/3. This is where your new construction is scrutinised to ensure all materials, methods & design complies with Building Code (NCC) and aligns with Australian Standards. At this stage a mandatory Energy Assessment is completed. This is generally a 2wk turnaround. 5) DEVELOPMENT CONSENT / APPROVAL is your 3/3 - congratulations, you are allowed to begin building! A quick 2wk turnaround from council to stamp your certified plans and good to go! 6) CONSTRUCTION begins. Depending on the project, building works can be 8 - 24wks generally. Hope youve found this helpful I offer personalised consultations around this for people seeking good info prior to taking considered action. Featured home designed by myself. 09.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW... When you build on a sloping block, there are rules in place that govern how steep your driveway can be. This can be easily missed from the buyers consideration during early stages of choosing a block of land.... With all of the *horrendous* driveway examples about the hills areas, you can certainly be forgiven for thinking that one big steep driveway will be acceptable. However rules change over time. What was acceptable back then, isnt necessarily permitted in todays standard. So why not one big steep driveway...? Apart from needing supreme fitness and huge calves on bin day, a steep driveway can become unsafe. It can also cause drainage issues on your land or for surrounding property, whether that be your neighbours or council land. Not to mention earth moving costs can increase as the driveway gradient increases. But this doesnt mean you cant buy a sloping block because of a driveway! Clever design with the right designer (like me!) can produce some bespoke ideas to create a build that works with the natural contours of the block. This highlights my point of consultation during early planning stages. This way you can make a purchase with eyes wide open and feel confident in your build process right from the beginning Featured home by Gallery Living Homes. Design modified by myself.
08.01.2022 PERTH STADIUM is impressive! I watched a BBL game there last week and loved checking out the building as much as I could amidst all the avid Scorchers fans! The precinct has been well considered with easy access to public transport. The building itself has a good functional layout while all exteriors were attractive to the eye. I wish I had time to do a proper tour, so Ill be back to learn more! Aaaand to watch the Dockers in action over footy season ;) @ Optus Stadium
08.01.2022 Windows hold several purposes for a home. Windows let in abundant natural light; they allow the sun to warm us during winter days. Windows allow us to be sheltered from weather while enjoying surrounding landscapes and they ventilate a house and cool us down in summer months. Windows create a pleasing aesthetic, adding a level of interest to an external elevation. Windows make an internal space feel large and spacious and help us feel connected to the outdoors. However, windo...ws can also let valuable heat escape during winter (especially at night) which means you will probably run up your heating bill. Likewise, in summer if there is too much western facing glass, your home will become a sauna! Air can also escape if windows do not seal properly. And they certainly can be counterproductive if poorly placed in the homes design. Something else you may not be aware of is there are restrictions on upper level windows for both safety and privacy reasons. For example, a window can only be operable (opening) from a certain height off floor level or a portion needs to be frosted to a certain height to protect neighbouring properties. All these factors, positive and negative, contribute to how comfortable we feel in our own home. This can often be at a sub-conscious level and may not even be something considered when designing your home, especially if you are choosing a pre-designed home. Regardless if you are working with an Architect, a qualified Building Designer, or even a sales consultant in a display home my advice would be to listen to conversations being had about window placement, size, style, energy efficiency etc AND cross reference all of this information with how YOU and your family like to live! Get this component wrong and you risk being unknowingly unsettled in your own home. Get it right and your home will be heaven on earth through all seasons in the year!! Featured home designed by myself for Gallery Living Homes.
05.01.2022 Open showers, also known as walk-in showers, are a popular addition to the bathroom. We see them a lot now in new home builds, as well as renovation projects. There are usually pros and cons to most design elements and the open shower is no different. First lets define open shower... as the name suggests, the open shower is just that... not enclosed like a traditional shower alcove and without a door.... Benefits of an open shower include: * Easy mobility in and out of the shower which is particularly wonderful for elderly, injured or disabled bodies * A single glass panel can create an open, spacious feel in a room * The absence of a door means no door swing needs to protrude into the greater bathroom area * Less moving parts can mean less ongoing maintenance and cleaning * You can use different materials to create the walk in shower such as feature glass or a tiled wall - or a half wall with glass on top! What are some other considerations...? * Open showers dont contain steam from hot water as well, which leads to a bathroom fogging up far more easily * You need a sufficient amount of space to house both a decent length shower panel and enough clearance beyond the panel to move around * Water spray off the body can likely land outside of the shower so thought needs to be given to surrounding fixtures/fittings * Ultimately a minimum 1m long alcove will be best for minimising water egress into the greater bathroom area There you have it - the ins and outs of open showers! The featured bathroom was designed with ease of cleaning in mind and spoke to my clients taste for something bold and beautiful Designed by myself for Brilliant SA Built by Brilliant SA by Aaron Citti
05.01.2022 Sundays are for relaxing and what better way to relax then in a big bathtub looking out a big picture window?! This renovation started with a pokey bathroom adjacent a single toilet room. We decided to knock down one wall and build another wall in the opposite direction. This hid the toilet from the hallway and turned the bathroom into a spacious area.... A giant new window to maximise views and this bathroom has gone from dated to delightful Designed by me. Built by Brilliant SA.
05.01.2022 Finding what works for you is worth the exploration and experimentation! The brief for this project in relation to the vanity area was to provide a space where my client could sit down to do her hair and make up in the mornings, rather than standing. The challenge was that the room wasnt overly huge and so a solution needed to be found where we could hit the wishlist but still have the ensuite feel spacious for the couple who would occupy the area.... We customised a vanity with bevel edge handle detail to avoid anything further protruding into the bathroom. The depths of the carcass and benchtop were governed by the selected basin and tapware. Sufficient clearance needed to be allowed inside the carcass, while also ensuring the tap and basin cut outs in the stone top were at a safe enough distance from each other to hold structural integrity over time. When the dressing table component was designed, we opted to set it down and set it back from the main vanity benchtop. This allowed movement behind the seated area to clear the fixed panel of glass to the shower. Doing this also created a nice visual upon entry into the room and obviously a lower bench height means more practical use while sitting down. Of course the joy of custom joinery means we were able to create a gorgeous custom mirror to match! Bevel edge detail nods to the deco style in adjacent rooms. The colour palette was chosen to suit the heritage part of the home in which the bathroom resides... a heritage bungalow with rich timbers and marble throughout. We gave the bathroom a modern edge introducing matt black fixtures. The result... well Ill let you decide My client is in love with her new ensuite and that makes me a happy designer Designed by myself for Brilliant SA Built by Brilliant SA by Aaron Vitti

04.01.2022 Flashback Friday! This coastal villa had the oldest original kitchen I have come across to date... just check out the vintage appliances! It kinda reminds me of kitchen play sets you buy your kids Once we installed some modern appliances (and eliminated the leaking gas!) my client didnt know herself!... 03.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW... When building a single standing, multi level home (2 storey or more), there are rules in place that govern... * where walls are positioned in relation to the land boundaries (upper level setbacks)...?... * height of windows from finished floor levels to protect overlooking to neighbouring properties...? * balconies facing neighbouring properties need to be screened to certain heights for privacy...? * windows only opening a certain distance...? As an example; if you have gorgeous ocean views from the rear of the upper level and you want to have a balcony off the 2nd floor living room, but the balcony looks over the adjacent propertys back yard, it is a requirement that your balcony needs to be screened up to the height depicted in your council areas development plan. In a lot of Adelaide metro council areas, this height is 1.7m high. So when you are sitting (or standing for some!), it is likely you will not see the ocean at all from your new balcony. This information is really helpful when you are looking for that perfect block of land with the view. The orientation of your home on the block in relation to your neighbours home could be the difference between capitalising on the views or not capturing them at all. Id hate for anyone to buy land with this aim in mind, only to find they cant achieve what they set out to do once they had already committed. I hope this is some helpful mid-week info for you all This featured home was the first 2 storey home I designed 6yrs ago. Setbacks and window heights to the rear of property most certainly proved challenging, but we overcame them to deliver a wonderful family home. Built by Gallery Living Homes.
03.01.2022 While driving around Mt Barker today I was blown away by the growth in all of the (not so) new estates. This home was one of the first built in the Springlake Estate. My client absolutely loves colour and so the modern box bay around the bedroom window provided a perfect opportunity to add that pop of burnt orange. There is a cute matching letterbox just out of shot on the other side of the driveway too!... Home customised by myself. Built by Gallery Living Homes.

01.01.2022 Bathroom Furniture - oooh sounds fancy Well, it kinda is! When we think of a bathroom and what occupies the space, we consider a shower, vanity, toilet and perhaps a bath. You may think of these items as your bathroom furniture.... In design terms, bathroom furniture relates specifically to the joinery. In it's basic form - your modest vanity unit. There are so many retail pieces on the market, most of them able to be customised to a point, with a selected range of materials, textures and colours available. Choosing this model, you will be bound by set dimensions and the typical standalone pieces ie. wall hung vanity, mirror cabinet, tall boy. This is a nice solution, because it offers bulk manufacturing to be able to deliver wholesalers with bulk purchase, keeping consumer pricing reasonable. But does it meet your needs to a tee...?? For some perhaps. And perhaps price point is more important. For others, there is a preference for a bathroom to perform optimally each day. Enter custom bathroom furniture! Whether the needs be specific storage requirements, the ability to handle high traffic, or purely a craving for peace in the only private room within a home, custom joinery is going to provide that special bespoke outcome because the joinery is made to your every wish When you customise your bathroom furniture * You can choose absolutely any materials you like. * The design is millimetre perfect. * You can have whatever combination of doors, drawers, internal mechanisms you desire. * You can integrate other design elements in with the joinery, such as tiling or feature lighting. * Also, a good cabinet maker is going to use only the best hardware in hinges, drawer runners, handles etc. This will ensure your bathroom furniture is warranted and durable for a really long time. To help you achieve the best results, a Bathroom Designer is your best point of call. This has become a niche field and holds its own qualification. A BD will be able to share all their experience and supplier insight with you so that your bathroom needs are met beautifully. Featured bathroom designed by myself for Brilliant SA.
01.01.2022 Can bold still be timeless...? More often then not, clients want to add their own taste to a project but end up playing safe because they are purely thinking about re-sale value and less about what brings them fulfilment. Before commencing selections, is it worth asking yourself what is more important...?Your own satisfaction over the next 10-20yrs... OR Appeasing someone else who may or may not like it...? Regardless... theres no rule to say you cant be bold and timeless at the same time! Just a thought
01.01.2022 EAST PERTH TRANSPORT TERMINAL. Ceiling timbers soften a heavy concrete mass while warm, earthy stone look tiles mimic the wider WA landscape. The coffered ceiling adds interest to its large open terminal and Im sure it provides acoustic benefit too. This is a late 60s construction that does a great job of representing the state in which it resides (in my opinion!)
