"Special" is an uplifting, candid companion for those in the early stages of navigating a child’s disability. Fancy going to the book launch? You can register here: https://bit.ly/2Qbuxy2

24.01.2022 https://theconversation.com/its-25-years-since-we-redefined Another great read from Dr Andrew Whitehouse - looking at the history of autism and how far we have come In understanding the complex disorder. It also highlights how much we don’t know, and the need for continuing research.
23.01.2022 A great explanation about what an Ed & Dev Psychologist can help you with.
23.01.2022 A beautiful reminder that individuals have challenges AND strengths! Sadly, as autism assessors we are trained to see the deficits in children. It’s so important to balance a diagnostic report with a child’s strengths and positive personality traits. Strengths can be useful tools in intervention and offer hope to parents who might be struggling to picture what the future may hold for their child.
22.01.2022 Coding magic in Mandurah!
21.01.2022 Just because an autistic person doesn't display certain stereotypical symptoms of autism doesn't mean they're not autistic. In the past you would have to displa...y every single symptom of autism to be diagnosed as autistic, but that method was thrown out because of how incorrect it was. Not every autistic acts like the caricature of autism that you have in your head. #AutieBiographical #ActuallyAutistic #SliceOfLife

20.01.2022 I am an Educational and Developmental Psychologist working as an autism assessor in the Perth metro area. I have more than 12 years experience in this role and working with children, adolescents and adults with a broad range of disabilities. I am a current member of the Western Australian Autism Diagnostician Forum (WAADF). I use current best practice and evidenced based assessment skills to determine whether an individual meets DSM 5 criteria for autism spectrum disorder. I ...am also able to assess a child’s developmental level or cognitive skills with a range of assessment tools. I work collaboratively with the speech pathologist and referring paediatrician throughout this process. I am available to assess your child or adolescent three days a week: Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We are a home visiting service. Medicare rebates are available when referred by a private paediatrician. Please contact me if you wish to talk more about the range of assessment options available.
19.01.2022 You know, it's very, very OK to think, "This isn't fair!" and "Why my child" when parenting a special needs child. The struggle, every day, is exhausting and ca...n be lonely. Anger is often a very normal emotion that accompanies that part of a parenting journey - not at your child or yourself - just at the circumstance and the collective hardness of all the things in a day, a week, a year. Let's all remember to love and support more of our amazing parents of children with special needs. https://medium.com//my-battle-with-anger-in-special-needs-
19.01.2022 "On the spectrum" is thrown around loosely - a little like, "I'm so OCD." That indicates that there's not really an understanding of what the actual diagnoses m...eans and how life-impactful it is. Please do read this hugely insightful article. https://theaspergian.com//its-a-spectrum-doesnt-mean-what/ See more

15.01.2022 What a thoughtful exploration of inclusion - with so much pointed at curiousity before judgement. This is the greatest way to build knowledge and emapthy and then to wrap informed inclusive practices around that.
