17.01.2022 Veterinary Topic Monday Keeping Our Pets Cool This Summer Summer is upon us and so are the sweltering temperatures that we’ve come to expect. During this time, we must remember our pets, as they get hot just like we do. When temperatures are above 30oC, pet owners who don’t provide adequate shelter and water for their pets can see signs of distress and in extreme cases, this can lead to death. ... Heatstroke is something we must prevent in our pets. Heatstroke is a state of hyperthermia which can result in thermal injury to tissues. It is a very serious condition which can lead to multiple organ failure and animals can die quickly if not treated. Some signs of heatstroke can include: panting or breathing distress, drooling, agitation, increased heart rate, vomiting or diarrhoea, dizziness, lethargy, muscle tremors, delirium or seizures. If your pet is showing these signs, you should move them to a shaded or cool area and allow them to drink small amounts of cool water. You should try to normalise your pet’s body temperature by applying or spraying cool or tepid water (not cold to avoid shock) onto their fur/skin followed by fanning. Wetting down the area around your pet can also help or using wet towels. You should take your pet to the vet immediately to be checked as it is a life-threatening emergency. Some tips to help prevent your pets getting too hot this summer include: Getting them regularly groomed to ensure their fur is not too long. Making sure they have plenty of clean fresh water in multiple places. You can also add ice cubes to their water or give these to your dog to lick and gnaw on. Another idea is to give them ice blocks with treats inside to keep them intrigued, or frozen watermelon. Providing your pets with a cool, shaded area with good ventilation. It is also recommended to bring your pets indoors on hot, humid days if it is cooler inside (e.g. with fans or aircons). Exercising your pets early in the morning or late in the evening when it is cooler. Avoid walking in hot, humid conditions or on hot sand or concrete. Also avoid fake grass as this can absorb heat and can burn their paw pads. Do not leave your pets in a car, even with the windows down. The high temperatures in the car combined with inadequate air flow leaves your pet vulnerable to overheating, which can happen really quickly. In fact, cars can double their temperatures inside. Provide a small paddle pool for dogs and a couple of cold, wet towels on the floor for your cat to cool down on if required. There are cooling mats also available from Kmart, etc, for your pets to sit on. Beach days are fun, however if the sand is too hot for your feet, it is too hot for their paws, too. Bring water for your dog to drink and don’t allow your dog to drink too much seawater, as the salt can make them sick. Regards, Brianna
