11.01.2022 I loved interviewing John 'de Castella' Clements for this piece about the Jodi Lee Foundation's JLF Trek. Growing up, John was a teacher in my home town of Cleve, a member of Apex with my dad, also a bit of a goer on the footy field, I'm told. Now aged 63 and living in Normanville, John is a bowel cancer survivor and has also had a knee replacement. Not that this slows him down. When my sister, our friend Monica and I did the JLF Trek last year (we only did 25 km, John did 7...0!) it was lovely to bump into him on the journey. We saw him for about seven seconds: he zoomed past us, white hair blowing behind him in the breeze like a runaway bride's veil, and then he was gone. "I must have been trying to get to the after party," he jokes. He is living proof that early detection saves lives. He wouldn't have known he had cancer if not for a screening test he did after being pestered by his mother, who lost her own battle with the disease while John was undergoing chemo.
