12.01.2022 Having received 1.05 metres of rainfall in December, we have now had 145mm over the past 3 days and hasn't stopped. 2020 saw 3.745 metres fall with November being the driest on record for 31 years , December being the wettest. Managing our rainfall to best care for our cattle, has seen us change our management practices as well as our genetics during the 11 years of our existence. Currently we carry 440 head on about 500 usable acres under a stud regime, with a fully blown ...cell grazing system. Forget chemical fertilisers that make the grass grow, we need high level soil quality so the grasses are the most nutritious. I have never liked urea as to me it is a quick fix, which sucks the good stuff out of the soil because the grass grows faster than the soil can support it and maintain balance. We initially selected our genetics based on EBVs, even though we were aware that there is an unbalanced number of terminal traits measured. If there is ever going to be weaknesses in structure, you will find them real quick running a cell grazing operation with a 3 metre annual rainfall, especially feet. If the feet are not right, the rest is invariably not right. So, phenotype, structure, conformation, call it what you like, has become our underlying main focus. The highest performing, terminal trait indexed genetics have been replaced with a highly maternal type stud herd. Our opinion, our environment, but it works for us. See more
