25.01.2022 ANZAC Day 2020: Embracing the Spirit of Mateship There are so many ways you can get involved and commemorate this Anzac Day - all while maintaining our social distancing. The RSL WA invited all of the community to: * Have children create craft or draw pictures about ANZAC Day and post on our Facebook page and place in their home windows. * Share RSL WA mateship-themed Veteran video profiles and articles on social media.... * Posting ANZAC Day tributes and photos to our Facebook page, including the #rslwamateship and #DrivewayDawnService hashtag on all social posts. And please dont forget the Veterans or serving members who you have closer to home. Pick up a phone and let them know you're thinking of them this Anzac Day. We would love to see your personal messages posted to our page this Anzac Day - or if you like, send us a message and we can post on your behalf. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
25.01.2022 Check on a mate RSL Australia asks that you contact a mate who might be alone this Anzac Day. It's an opportunity to invoke the Anzac value of mateship and check to see how a friend or family member is feeling. Open Arms is open 24/7 for veterans or their family members to chat to someone. 19.01.2022 Great local business supporting veterans.
18.01.2022 It was fabulous to return to a whole of community gathering to commemorate Remembrance Day in this challenging year - the 75th since the end of WWII. Rain earlier in the week meant our full poppy collection was not on display, but the park was brightened and the kids again appreciated the purple poppies especially. The day made all the more special to once again have the students from Brookton District High School join us in Memorial Park for our service. ... Thank you to Holly for reading the poem "One thousand men are walking" and to the student councillors for laying a wreath. We had assistance on the day from our local Bandicoot Girl Guides group who attended the flag and layed a wreath. Much appreciated as always. Thank you to Shire Councillors Crute and Lilly for attending a laying a wreath, with apologies received from Cr Watts. The refreshed plantings received lots of comments.
17.01.2022 Gunfire breakfast In Brookton, we usually host the Gunfire Breakfast following the dawn service back at our RSL Hall. We have stong attendance with around 100 community members and visitors - with numbers growing every year. This year we would love for you to continue this tradition in your home - and share your photos with us! Just because we're not together doesn't mean we can't be connected! ... (From aph.gov.au) Many communities follow the dawn service with a ‘traditional’ gunfire breakfast. ‘Gunfire’ is a British tradition and was: ... the usual term for the early cup of tea served out to troops in the morning before going on first parade, whenever possible. In the War [WWI] recruits in training always had ‘Gun Fire’ supplied to them, the work before breakfast being found particularly trying. The morning gun in a garrison town suggested the name probably. (E Fraser and J Gibbons, Soldier & Sailor Words & Phrases, Routledge, London, 1925, p. 113) The ‘gunfire breakfast’ seems to have evolved from the above, and comprises whatever is available at the timeit could be ‘coffee and rum’ or ‘stew, sausage and bread’, or even ‘bacon and eggs’ (which is served by the War Memorial for their ‘gunfire breakfast’ on Anzac Day).Gunfire breakfast

15.01.2022 The Poppy is for Sacrifice In Australia, single poppies are not usually worn on ANZAC Day - the poppy belongs to Remembrance Day, 11 November. However, wreaths of poppies are traditionally placed at memorials and honour boards on ANZAC Day. In Brookton, our local Brookton Bandicoot Girl Guides usually carry around baskets of rosemary fo the public to wear at our Anzac Day Services. ... 06.01.2022 LONG TAN DAY The Vietnam War was Australia's longest military engagement of the 20th century. Almost 60,000 Australians fought in the war and more than 500... lost their lives. Originally known as Long Tan Day, Vietnam Veterans Day is commemorated on 18 August every year. This year marks the 54th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Today we pause to reflect on the service and sacrifice of all men and women who served in the Vietnam War and to thank those who are serving today. Closer to home the community of #BruceRock has made our Vietnam vets feel welcome every year for over a decade - and last year the community unveiled their latest monument to honour those that have served in conflicts around the world (see below). 04.01.2022 ANZAC Requiem We remember those who still sleep where they were left amid the holly scrub in the valleys and the ridges of Gallipoli on the rocky and terraced hills of Palestine and in the lovely cemeteries of France. We remember those who lie asleep in the ground beneath the shimmering haze of the Libyan Desert at Bardia, Derna, Tobruk and amid the mountain passes and olive groves of Greece and Crete, and the rugged, snow-capped hills of Lebanon and Syria.... We remember those who lie buried in the rank jungle of Malaya and Burma in New Guinea and in the distant isles of the Pacific. We remember those who lie buried amid loving friends in our Motherland and in our own far North. We remember those who lie in unknown resting places in almost every land and those gallant men whose grave is the unending sea. We remember those who died as prisoners of war, remote from their homeland, and from the comforting presence of their kith and kin. We think of those in our women’s services who gave their lives in our own foreign lands and at sea, and of those who proved to be, in much more than a name, the sisters of our fighting men. We recall, too, the staunch friends who fought beside our men on the first ANZAC Day men of New Zealand who helped to create the name of ANZAC. We recall of those who gave their lives in the Royal Navy, the British Army, the Royal Air Force, the Merchant Service and in other British and Dominion Forces. We think of those British men and women who fell, when, for the second time in history, their nation and its kindred stood alone against the overwhelming might of an oppressor; and we think of every man and woman who in those crucial hours died so that the lights of freedom and humanity might continue to shine. We think of those gallant men and women who died in Korea, Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam, Somalia, the Gulf, East Timor, Afghanistan and Iraq as well as in Peacekeeping Forces and on humanitarian missions, defending the Commonwealth and other countries of the Free World, against a common enemy. May these all rest proudly in the knowledge of their achievement, and may we and our successors in that heritage prove worthy of their sacrifice.
04.01.2022 LAYING A WREATH To the ancient Romans, a wreath of laurel leaves was a symbol of bravery, strength and triumph. Its meaning can be traced back to Greek mythology. Since the Victorian era, wreaths of flowers woven into a circle have been laid on graves to represent life and resurrection.... Since World War I, wreaths have been laid at memorials to remember those Australians who died in service during wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. If you would like to lay a wreath, or floral tribute, at the Memorial this Anzac Day, we ask that you strictly adhere to social distancing requirements, and do so in a respectful and contemplative manner. If you would like to make a wreath - please follow the link. https://anzacportal.dva.gov.au/comm/event-planning/wreaths

02.01.2022 Today we remember those who served in the Vietnam War, where 60,000 Australians served and over 500 tragically lost their lives. On this day in a rubber plantat...ion near the village of Long Tan, Australian soldiers fought one of their fiercest battles of the war, the Battle of Long Tan. The men of Delta Company, 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, faced a force of some 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. Conditions were tough, as heavy rain fell on the battle field. 18 Australians died as a result of the action and 25 were wounded Today we say thank you for your service and honour those Vietnam veterans both living and past. #TYFYS

01.01.2022 Anzac Biscuits During World War I, people at home in Australia often sent parcels to the Anzacs to show their support. Many of these packages included biscuits made from rolled oats, golden syrup and flour, which had high nutritional value and kept well while being transported overseas. These biscuits have come to be known as Anzac biscuits and are still popular in Australia today.
