25.01.2022 If you are an owner of an older home or building please make sure you act swiftly to repair shoddy brick work around your building. Short term fixes cause more grief down the track and the lifespan of your property is seriously compromised if the work is not carried out by competent tradesmen. Don’t take short cuts because you will ultimately pay the price later. The photos below demonstrate The importance of good maintenance and the use of reputable trades and not ‘Harry Ho...me Handyman Services’ We will save our building but the work has started just in time!! You can see the deterioration of the internal bricks. Caused by neglect and poor workmanship. The cavities should be free of rubble and fine sand (old mortar) that has fallen away from the mortar joints. The rubble becomes the bridge between outside and inside which results in damp walls.

24.01.2022 Fabulous start to my day. The sun is waking up, the traffic is starting up and I am up

22.01.2022 View through the porthole....well almost. The mirror in the mantle piece shows off our chandeliers.?

20.01.2022 NYE @ The Brookton We are set up for a great night.

20.01.2022 Tony had to get inside the wall beside the chimney to remove the internal brick wall, repair, replace and make safe the wall. The space beside the chimney in the kitchen was boxed off and the range removed and the area tiled. You can see the bricks falling away whilst Tony is inside the cavity. This is Tony’s only option to save our wall.

20.01.2022 Cast iron inserts for the dining room fireplace.

19.01.2022 The Brookton is a large building but adequate storage is lacking!! Our Solution a large compactus! Minimal space required to achieve metres of compact storage!!

18.01.2022 The Water pipes were wrapped in newspaper from the days of pounds, shillings and pence. Repointing has begun. The old mortar has been ground out and replaced with the new lime stone mortar. When the mortar sets like plasticine, Tony comes back over it to tidy it up. A temporary lintel of steel is placed above the loose bricks to retain the bricks above whilst the lower bricks are repaired. The man is an artisan.

15.01.2022 Relocated our beautiful timber screen and cozied up the area with our beautiful couches

15.01.2022 Moldy and rotten carpet removed. I am still removing carpet. I am determined to get it all out today/tonight!!!!

15.01.2022 The dancing floor is being exposed for our NYE party. The plan. Remove the carpet from the upstairs private lounge room. The perfect dance floor is hidden below old carpet. The room is fully furnished and posed some logistical problems as to how we pull up the carpet without removing the furniture. Solution: cut out the area that will be the dance floor. Shift, push and shove the couches and coffee tables (all of which are very heavy) out of the way and cut out an area lar...ge enough for guests to get down and boogie!! The dust is thick under foot from decades of dirt and sand that has found urs way through the carpet and underlay. When I pulled the piece of carpet up I thought the flooring was chipboard. I couldn’t see the colour of the jarrah boards for the dust and the stains. I breathed a big sigh of relief when I realized the floor boards are still there. There is a wee bit of work ahead of us but it will be worth it because the floor will look fabulous once the floors are cleaned, sanded and polished. If you are a local and don’t have plans for NYE - join us. Please give me a call for the details. Kerry 045811135 This is an invitation only event. You must contact me.

15.01.2022 First prep coat applied to the entry hall and passageway

14.01.2022 I purchased a range of lamp shades, lamps and pottery from Bec and Steve Mead - the new owners of Lightingales last week. I then set about replacing the old shades with new ones, and repaired some wonky lamp bases whilst David Bond created bespoke brackets for a very large French themed headboard which he installed in our ‘Parisienne’ room. David also hung up some more artwork for me. David must be asking himself the perennial question are we there yet? Nope!! He still has... a few more pieces to hang in the men’s wing. David helped me to get our old girl ready for my daughter’s 40th birthday party which we celebrated last Saturday night. Family and friends joined Kellie for dinner, fabulous entertainment which was provided by an absolutely amazing vocalist, lots of dancing and an overnight stay in our beautiful rooms. Thank you to everyone who helped to make Kellie’s birthday a beautiful occasion.

13.01.2022 I love Brookton

13.01.2022 A new chapter commences today. Our painters have started to paint our ceilings.

12.01.2022 We are moving up to the second floor with prep work happening. I love these guys. They are true artisans!!

10.01.2022 Day Four was a huge day for the boys. They worked tirelessly all day removing the loose bricks, cutting out the old cement that was painted on the bricks, turned the bricks around and used new mortar to reset and point the bricks. The wall will be completed by this Sunday. In a weeks time, the wall will look like the original brickwork. The mortar will take on an aged look and no one will be any the wiser that any work was done. A true craftsman. thank you Tony Humphrey !!!

09.01.2022 We are off to the races. The Brookton is hosting the Brookton Community Resource Centre’s Melbourne Cup Luncheon today.

09.01.2022 I am fast gaining a reputation for sourcing bargains via Marketplace and Gumtree. I do this to ensure that we don’t go bankrupt before or after we open our beautiful old girl up for business. My focus has been on finding decor such as the artwork that David Bond has installed for us to adorn the walls throughout the upstairs areas and our entry area. ... My latest find had been brand new table lamps for the 14 bedrooms. They are perfect and make a statement in each room.

07.01.2022 On the last stage of repairing, rendering and installing the cast iron insert and mantle piece in the dining room. So excited to see it all coming together. DONE!! She’s BIG!!

06.01.2022 This is why we employed professionals. I am so happy. Seeing the transformation has made me tear up. I am the biggest sook!! Halligan's Painting & Decorating

06.01.2022 New light fittings have been installed in our King Rooms.

05.01.2022 Day Three. The brickwork has been acid cleaned to remove the excess mortar. You can see the transformation of the wall as Tony and John work their way across the wall. Day three finished with the preparation of the brickwork around the windows. There were big gaps where the bricks were missing and mortar had deteriorated which enabled rain to enter the cavity. The windows will be water tight tomorrow

03.01.2022 Progress on the laundry and toilet walls. They have gone from exposed window internal walls to repaired internal and external walls.

02.01.2022 Today we start the next chapter in the restoration and renovation of The Brookton. She’s a big girl and there is a lot of work to be done on the outside of of girl. I am sure that the 12 tonne of sand is only the first load of many more before we can say we’ve done it!!... I think the ‘quick fixes’ were completed by none other than ‘Harry Home Handyman’ A skilled tradesperson....NOT! By this time next week the bricks will be reinstated using traditional mortar and brick work techniques by Tony from Creative Tuckpointing. I am so excited to see the girls outer garments being repaired, replaced and loved. Stay tuned for updates as Tony works his magic.
