20.01.2022 The coronavirus pandemic is changing the way we access healthcare and dental care is no exception. Under the current COVID-19 restrictions, dentists are no longer allowed to provide routine care such as check-ups and cleans to minimize the spread of COVID-19. Australian dental clinics are used to following stringent disinfection standards set by the Australian Dental Board one of the strictest in the world. At Brookwater Dental Surgery, we have a dedicated sterilization r...oom with demarcated clean and dirty zones to prevent cross-contamination. All instruments are thoroughly sterilised through disinfection solution, ultrasonic cleaning, then high heat and steam. If you are in pain or are experiencing a dental emergency, your dentist will be able to see you at Brookwater Dental Surgery. We are still open to see your dental emergencies. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ME? WHEN DO I CALL THE DENTIST? Non-essential dental care is postponed under the recommendation and guidance of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) has recommended and the Australian Dental Association (ADA). If you are experiencing a dental emergency, you will be seen by our dentists. This includes: - Dental pain - Toothache - Infection - Swelling - Trauma - Uncontrolled bleeding - Medically compromised patients (poor overall health) - Referrals by medical practitioners WHAT CAN I DO IN THE MEANTIME? COVID-19 will be with us for a while; it is unlikely that the restrictions on dental practice will be lifted soon. It is ever more important to take care of your oral health by keeping a healthy diet and oral hygiene routine. If you have a dental emergency, or are unsure of whether you can be seen by our dentists, call us today at (07) 3199 3260

20.01.2022 COST-CUTTING TIPS #1: How can I clean my teeth if I cant go to the dentist? Avoid spending thousands when you can finally go back to the dentist in X months because youve let your dental hygiene go to waste. Unfortunately, the hard deposits or build-up (calculus) cannot be removed at home. But you can stop a bigger concern: TOOTH DECAY The answer to this one is painfully obvious. MUM WAS RIGHT! Brushing and flossing IS the way to go. Wait but why? Can I just rinse with mou...thwash? We need to physically scrub our toilets to make it clean. Our teeth are the same. Teeth need to be scrubbed by toothbrushes and floss to truly be clean! A simple flush, or mouthwash, isnt going to do it. Toothbrushes scrubs the outside of our teeth, while floss reaches into the gaps between our teeth that the toothbrush bristles cannot reach. Start with brushing twice daily (first thing in the morning & last thing before bed), and flossing daily (during your night-time brush). Boom. Get your dental hygiene back on track.

18.01.2022 *Childhood Dental Milestones How can you track your little ones dental development?* Mums and Dads, On top of being Tooth Fairies (essential service btw), we are going to teach you how to be part-time dentists! ... Many of you are curious about how to monitor your little ones dental development while dentists are currently restricted in seeing you and your loved ones. Here are some childhood dental milestones that your dentist looks for during check-ups! Every child is a unique individual and grows at their own pace. Variations are normal and having a good dental dental growth record something that dentists track is important! 1.Teething Your loved one may start teething between 4-12 months old, it is normal to be a little faster or slower. Usually, the bottom front teeth are the first to appear! Generally, by 36months (3years) your loved one should have a full set of 20 baby teeth. 2. First Adult Tooth Around the age of 6, your little one starts transitioning into adult teeth. The bottom front teeth are usually first to transition sometimes the adult tooth may start erupting behind before the baby tooth is lost. If that is the case, it is about time the baby tooth needs to go with some bravery of your little one. Some adult teeth even erupt without the loss (exfoliation) of baby teeth but how?! Simple, we have more adult teeth that baby teeth. Your loved one will have their first adult molar erupt behind their baby last, back-most baby tooth around the same age of 6. During it erupts, it is remarkably important to teach them how to brush that new tooth. 3. The Ugly Duckling Stage Till about 12 years old, dentists and orthodontists term this significant transition stage the Ugly Duckling stage. Your child will experience drastic changes in terms of teeth position and jaw development. What happens at this stage is very important for your childs future appearance and dental function. Let a trained eye monitor things! At Brookwater Dental Surgery, we work intimately with our specialist orthodontist colleagues literally down the hallway. Our teamwork is based on your wishes and our recommendations. Unfortunately, we are unable to see you and your loved one under this currently climate we miss counting your childs baby teeth, giving them stickers and hearing childrens laughter how precious is that sound? Once this blows over (and it will!), book a checkup with us and so we can keep a close eye on your childs dental development. Your child may be eligible for free kids dental, for more information, check this link! shorturl.at/ptGX6 For now, we are still here to see your emergency dental needs. 07.01.2022 Brightening your teeth AT HOME Home remedies for teeth whitening are aplenty some online advice cause permanent tooth damage due to a lack of proper knowledge. An example of damaging online advice include the combination of strong acid and abrasion (lemon juice and bicarbonate abrasive). What happens is your tooth becomes severely softened through the acid and then gets rubbed away by the abrasive. Your tooth may look better because the discolouration is rubbed away but a l...ot of tooth structure is lost at the same time. Not good. With everyone at home now, and getting on TikTok , we thought wed share good advice around brightening your smiles safely for the selfie cam. Heres a safe way to get started with brightening your teeth at home using supermarket products. Cheap, easy, tested. First, there are two types of tooth staining. Internal staining: Birth defects, Medication-related, Age-related External staining: Smoking-related, Food-related eg wine, coffee, berries Commonly, it is a combination of both which causes an unappealing yellowish colour on our teeth. So what can you do about it? How can you make sure that its the right thing to do? BRUSH MORE EFFECTIVELY. This gets rid of external staining to a good degree. ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSHES as excellent in levelling up the common mans brushing efficiency. Brush for 2 full minutes, get rid of the accumulated stain particles properly. WHITENING TOOTHPASTE. What dentists look for in whitening products is Hydrogen Peroxide, which breaks down the stain particles without compromising tooth structure at the right concentrations. ***not all whitening toothpastes are equal*** A good product is to start with is Colgate Renewal. It has the highest concentration of the whitening agent in all supermarket whitening toothpastes. Oral B and other major brands have their own products which work well too. SUMMARY: Get an electric toothbrush, it brushes stains away much better. Brush for 2 full minutes. Get a whitening toothpaste; Colgate Renewal is an excellent product with the right ingredients. Do this for 1 month. Leave your questions down below! Our dentists are online to have a chat Results may vary from person to person. Speak to your dentist for more information. 07.01.2022 RESTRICTIONS ON DENTAL PRACTICE AMIDST COVID-19 The Australia Dental Association released a statement (23rd March 2020) asking all practices to cease routine ultrasonic cleans and practise clinical judgement on treatment provided. However, check-ups and examinations still continue with no cleans. If you are booked in for a procedure that the guidelines no longer support, we will be in contact as soon as we can. In light of the doom and gloom, it is our goal at Brookwater Den...tal Surgery to help our community tide through this period safely and in good health. 07.01.2022 ORAL HYGIENE FOR CHILDREN Simple hacks to develop oral hygiene habits in your loved one. We understand its challenging to get you children to brush as they should, especially if they didnt get the habits right from a young age. Good brushing technique involves: (1) 2minute Duration (2) Effective cleaning. Our solution? ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH (1) TIMER The main benefit of an electric toothbrush is the TIMER. It has a built-in timer that buzzes at 2 minutes - the duration you... should be brushing! 1 minute for top teeth, 1 minute for bottom teeth. Its the simplest way of developing the habit around PROPER BRUSHING. Brush till it buzzes. Simple. Easy. No sitting around with a stopwatch, no flipping sand glasses. Let the toothbrush do it for you. (2) EFFECTIVE BRUSHING Electric toothbrushes vibrate and rotate the bristles, meaning your child only has the easy job of placing it at the right spot, and the toothbrush does the cleaning. Electric toothbrushes have also been tested by studies to prove that it gives a better clean consistently. We recommend the Oral B Vitality range as an excellent entry into electric toothbrushes. 03.01.2022 ******PREGNANCY EFFECT ON TEETH AND GUMS******* Hormonal changes during pregnancy results in changes in oral health around 2month mark PREGNANCY GINGIVITIS you may notice that your gums bleed more easily. This is temporary but can weaken the supporting tissues for your teeth if ignored. If you keep up a regular routine of brushing, flossing and dental check-ups, it should not affect you. ... PREGNANCY GUM TUMOURS (pregnancy epulis) A red, lumpy growth on your gums. Dont worry, they are usually harmless and go away once youve had your baby. FOOD CRAVINGS A classic during pregnancy. Once again, if you keep up with a regular oral hygiene (brushing & flossing) and dental check-ups, it should not cause major concerns. Keep yourself in a good mental state with delicious food Rinse your mouths after sweet or sour foods (acidic!), simple and effective way to protect your teeth MORNING SICKNESS The acid in the vomit erodes your teeth. While you might be tempted to brush your teeth immediately to get rid of the yucky taste, the immediate brushing can cause more damage to your teeth by stripping away the softened enamel. Commercial mouthwashes are often acidic too, its best to avoid them after vomiting as well. We recommend rinsing your mouth with teaspoon baking soda mixed into 1 cup of warm water or chewing sugar free gum. The aim is to neutralise the acid via baking soda or stimulating your saliva. Brush your teeth 30mins after the vomiting has ceased. GAGGING WHILE BRUSHING TEETH Some pregnant women find that brushing triggers their gag reflex and retching, especially around the back teeth (molars). If this is happening to you, try using a smaller toothbrush head, such as those for toddlers. You can also use an electric toothbrush the automatic movement of the brush heads means you dont have to push the toothbrush back and forth, provoking the retching. Simply aim and let the electric toothbrush clean for you. It is indeed an exciting and scary time! The mothers health is ever more important, and we are always here to support that. If you are ever unsure about anything teeth and pregnancy related, be sure to chat with your dentist during your check-ups. We would love to hold your hand through this amazing period and be part of your journey!
