22.01.2022 NATIVE ANIMALS NEED YOUR HELP Volunteers have had to treat sick and injured animals in their backyards after the Kimberleys only marine rehabilitation centre c...losed suddenly late last year. Broomes Native Animal Rescue has been taking care of all kinds of wildlife, including turtles, sea snakes, and Kookaburras. Against the odds, theyve managed to nurse many injured animals back to health and release them into the wild. They desperately need more financial and volunteer support to handle the load. Anyone who wants to get involved can go here: https://www.facebook.com/nativeanimalrescuebroome/

15.01.2022 Shade, shade and more shade. I would lobby for the purchase of a large mobile shade arrangement for events, especially on the beach, for: volleyball, triathlons..., touch footy, bike rides, turtle monitoring, polo, fundraising walks, dinosaur tracking, surf lifesaving, kids competitions, fishing, kite flying, library books, sand castle building and other kinds of events, could be used at BRAC and BSHS ovals and other community events. We need to resolve the problem of the removal of shade in public areas during cyclone season. This needs a cost/benefit analysis, and to look at options and cost of fixed infrastructure. It has been much commented to me about the shade at shopping centres including good shade for cruise passengers (most commenters in sympathy with the wilting cruise passengers waiting under temporary shade in the carpark behind Coles). So this will need industry support as well. Broome Community Voice Nik Wevers | Brendan Renkin | Fiona West | Franque Batty | Wade Freeman Authorised by Nik Wevers 15 Orr St Broome

15.01.2022 WARNING: Graphic Image. Traditional Owners, Environs Kimberley and Broome residents were heartbroken recently when on the 11th of August an arsonist lit fires t...hat ripped through the much-loved Minyirr Park, and bushland near Gantheaume Point. The fires engulfed 250 hectares of environmentally and culturally important dunes and vegetation, causing extensive damage to three threatened or priority ecological communities. Sixteen hectares of Endangered Monsoon Vine Thickets were burnt; a culturally and ecologically important network of fire-sensitive rainforest-like patches extending up to One Arm Point. Twenty five hectares of the Priority 1 Cable Beach Ghost Gum (Corymbia paractia) were burnt, a species found only on the Broome peninsula. Lastly, eighty-three hectares of the Priority 1 Ecological Community Minyjurru on relict dunes (Sersalisia sericea) was incinerated, one third of the total remaining ecosystem, which also only occurs on the Broome peninsula. The fires also killed many animals including the Northern Brushtail possum. These fires were extremely damaging because Monsoon Vine Thickets are sensitive to fire and can be destroyed in very hot, uncontrolled fires said Environs Kimberley project officer Kylie Weatherall. It is tragic as these threatened and priority ecosystems take a long-time to establish and mature. There is a great need for improved community awareness, protection through legislation, and resourcing for land and fire managers It is hoped that with assistance some of the area will recover. Environs Kimberley are working closely with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Nyamba Buru Yawuru country managers and the Broome Shire to monitor and revegetate the area. There will be opportunities for local volunteers to support this rehabilitation work in coming months. Broome Police have advised that the maximum penalty for Criminal Damage (caused by fire) is life imprisonment. Pic: Damian Kelly

11.01.2022 RARE ANIMAL ENCOUNTER!!! Indigenous rangers in the Kimberley have made an exciting capture of a rare mammal. This adorable creature is the incredibly elusive Ki...mberley brush-tailed phascogale (Phascogale tapoatafa kimberleyensis), a vulnerable marsupial. Dambimangari Aboriginal Ranger, Phil Ngerdu, and Australian Wildlife Conservancy ecologist, Stella Shipway, were beyond excited to finally encounter this little mammal. Its the first ever time that Australian Wildlife Conservancy and Dambimangari rangers have captured one. They said the phascogale had been eluding the team for some time despite popping up regularly on camera traps and spotlighting surveys. Phil Ngerdu / Australian Wildlife Conservancy

01.01.2022 WHALE CUT FREE AFTER WEEK OF TRACKING Good news! A whale that was tangled in fishing ropes is free and off on its migration north. The adult humpback was d...ragging 15 metres of ropes and floats behind it. Rescuers tagged the animal off Broomes Cable Beach earlier this month but conditions werent favorable to cut the ropes until late last week. By that time, the whale had traveled up the Dampier Peninsula, as far north as the Buccaneer Archipeligo before turning south again. Have a listen here to our interviews with two of the team involved in freeing the whale.
