Volunteers are the backbone of this project and nothing we do would be possible without them. We are so lucky to have such a dedicated and passionate group of people who are willing to spend long hours early in the morning or late in the afternoon working to ensure we know exactly what is happening to our Bay! 22.01.2022 Did you know boat use is one of the major threats to seagrass? Whether its anchoring in seagrass meadows, propeller scars from being in water that is too shallow to actual boat groundings- all these are avoidable threats that face seagrass. These activities rip up seagrass roots and destabalise the ecosystem, becoming major threats as small scars can become like major roads through the meadow with continued use. Restoration of these can take up to 10 years, as once ...seagrass is uprooted it can lead to erosion of the sand banks it grows in- Imagine all the work that goes into planting a flower bed except underwater! Because Seagrass has roots (unlike seaweed) it is able to help seabeds retain their structure in the moving tides helping to create a constant habitat for different sea creatures, big or small! 09.01.2022 The Broome Seagrass community is deeply saddened to share the news that we are shocked and devastated by the loss of one of our most valued and loved seagrass volunteers and friends, Kevin Smith. Kev volunteered for 12 years with the Broome Community Seagrass Monitoring Project, rarely missing a session. He was qualified in the methodology and always kindly helping newcomers to learn the ropes. He took great delight in photographing the spectacular intertidal animals. He was ...also a volunteer with the DBCA Turtle Monitoring Program for 12 years, and had been running it as a volunteer when he was recently recognised at the DBCA Volunteer of the Year Awards. Kev was a widely-loved local photographer, often offering his services for free for good causes, and was recently was at the Broome Primary School fundraiser taking photos. He was a regular friendly face at the Broome Courthouse Markets where he sold his wonderful photography, and at his shop in Chinatown called The Rockpool. An accountant and photographer by trade, he also worked over the years at the Kimberley Land Council, Small Business Centre and Conservation Volunteers Australia. Over the years he gave his time, expertise and enthusiasm to the community via his contribution to many local committees and working groups. He was known as kind, caring, generous, passionate and a sweetheart with a great sense of humour. Kev, we will miss you so much and always treasure you in our hearts. See more
