18.01.2022 This is a full comb of Sugargum honey harvested in March this year. Once the cells of the honeycomb are full, the bees cap the honey with beeswax. Our honey can be purchased at our physical therapies and health products clinic, Colac Otway Chinese Medicine, Shop 5 Otway Plaza, 58 Hesse Street Colac. #purehoney #localhoney #localfood

18.01.2022 A sweet gumtree scent hit my nose as I walked by and I was reminded of the beautiful bush honey that we love so much. We havent had bush honey for a while, and we certainly miss the sweet but unique taste of stringy bark eucalyptus known as messmate. The honey is dark and strong, and very nutritious. #eucalyptus #eucalyptusshower #honey... #harvest #thisseason #australianhoney #sweetscent #nutritious See more

17.01.2022 What a great day! Despite the dry weather, our hard working bees have been filling our hives to the brim! We harvested a large amount of honey today from the na...tive bush near Forrest in the Otways. The bees have been collecting from manna gum and messmate species, which have been flowering profusely through January. It has a deliciously strong flavour, fantastic on toast, in tea, drizzled on deserts, or even as an ingredient for baked cakes. And another thing, its a very healthy food. Youve no doubt heard of probiotics: the good bacteria in our digestive system. Nutritional scientists tell us that native forest eucalyptus honey is prebiotic. Prebiotics is what the bacteria feed on. Eating this type of honey actually increases the amount and diversity of the good bacteria in your system. Our honey is as good as you can get. Its pure and untreated. It can be bought at our health clinic, Colac Otway Chinese Medicine, shop 5, 58 Hesse Street Colac. See more

12.01.2022 Spring is here! Its a special time of year for the birds and the bees! Here in southern Victoria, the bees dont do much over the winter except tightly cluster to keep the brood at the appropriate temperature of about 37 degrees. Once Spring arrives and the temperature starts to rise, the queen bees starts laying more and more eggs in order to build up the numbers of bees in the hive so that honey collection can go ahead full steam through the Spring and Summer. Sometimes a ...hive will swarm in the Springtime. This occurs when a second queenbee gets produced. The older queen becomes aware that a young contender has arrived and so to avoid a possibly fatal confrontation, she leaves with about a quarter of the hive. They will often settle on a bush or a post or something before finding a more permanent home such as in a hollow tree or even the wall of a house. Once in a house wall, it can be very difficult and expensive to remove them. Its a good idea to make sure that your house has no small gaps in the walls. Otherwise youll end up with unwelcome visitors who plan to stay! See more

10.01.2022 Natural Honeycomb This is a photograph of beautiful honeycomb formed in the way that bees have always built it before managed hives were invented. Take a look a...t another of our photos of honeycomb on a constructed wooded frame to see the difference. In managed hives we provide the frames for the bees to enable them to maximise the amount of comb that can can be built and consequently the volume of honey that can be stored. The frames also give us the ability to remove combs once they become too old to be of any use. The natural comb in this photo was built inside the lid of one of our hives that had become so full of honey that the bees extended their comb building into the only space that was left. We dont often see this, and I am always struck by the beauty of its form. We wanted to share it with you. http://colacotwaychinesemedicine.com//29/natural-honeycomb/ #honeycomb #bee #natural

09.01.2022 Its a joyous moment to lift the lid on a beehive and see the combs in this condition. It means that the hive is healthy and the surrounding environment is providing surplus nectar. It also means that well soon be harvesting this liquid gold.

08.01.2022 Finally we had a beautiful summer day! Bees were busy storing honey and pollen, laying eggs and growing brood. You can see the pattern of honey capped on the right of the frame, pollen in the middle and cells of brood on the left.

04.01.2022 I remember the day my father brought home our first beehive. I was six years old and was immediately fascinated with Dads new hobby. He placed it on the roof of the outside toilet to keep it away from overly inquisitive children and dogs. I could stand in a certain spot and see the bees coming and going. It wasnt long before he got a second, a third, and a fourth hive. The backyard soon got too small for this growing passion of my fathers. He soon found a willing landowner... on the outskirts of Colac who was willing to let Dad put hives on his land. The agreement was that Dad would put up a fence to keep the cows and the bees well apart. He soon planted a row of gum trees as well. We no longer keep bees on that property, but it gives me great pleasure to drive past all these years later and see those trees still alive and well. Bees and people produce positive benefits for our environment. See more
