24.01.2022 WHAT PLANS HAVE YOU GOT FOR THE GARDEN THIS WEEKEND? In my column in our current edition.. I've got a list of what needs to be done in August. - It’s a good time to fertilise and prune hibiscus so they develop a bushy habit and produce lots of flowers in summer. - If you have a vege garden don’t forget to water once or twice a week. Although it’s cooler, the drier winter winds will drain the moisture from the soil. - If you’re growing pineapples, give them a side dressing o...f complete fertiliser in late August. They like acid soils, so avoid using lime or dolomite. - Spray the flowers of your mango tree with a copper-based spray to fight anthracnose disease. - Plant your new roses now. Bagged and bare-rooted roses are in plentiful supply. - Fertilise your existing rose bushes by mulching around them with cow manure. - Keep your strawberries fruiting with a fortnightly feed of fish and seaweed solutions. - If older leaves of citrus are going yellow give them a dose of sulphate of ammonia. - Prune any untidy geraniums. Water in a handful of complete fertiliser around each plant. - Plant potatoes and sweet potatoes in the vegetable garden. Mound up soil around potatoes already growing. - Divide and replant perennials like gaillardia, gazania, rudbeckia and statice. For more on what flowers and vegetables you should be planting, see my column by clicking below https://issuu.com/glasshousec//edition_5_august_2020_2/34

24.01.2022 A bit cool this morning, so won't share any photos as there's not much to see.

24.01.2022 May the 4th be with you today in the garden ...

23.01.2022 I'm really getting into pumpkins at the moment. Have you had great success or maybe a failure or two growing pumpkins? Tell me about your experience and your tips for a story I'm writing. I'd love to see some if your pumpkin photos too. Here's one of my current crop.

21.01.2022 What’s the yellow poppy-like flower I see growing along the roadsides? Joan sent me the questions the other week, have you also seen it around? If you have, it’s most likely Coreopsis lanceolata (coreopsis or tickseed). It’s an escapee from the daisy family of plants. There are other garden coreopsis species but this one can colonise into pastures, disturbed open forests and along roadside and vacant grounds. It’s becoming an emerging environmental weed here and is one that authorities will have to watch and act on if it starts to get out of hand.

20.01.2022 This week, I've been picking cucamelons ... they taste like a cute little cucumber, but they look like a cute little melon. Coming from Mexico ... I think they'd go really well with tequila. I've love to see what unusual fruits you've been growing in your backyard. Send me a photo and tell me all about your favourite freaky fruit.

19.01.2022 You all know that I love getting out in the vege garden - and it's GREAT harvesting.. now looks like I might have to start googling a few pumpkin recipes.. got any suggestions?

11.01.2022 OK .. so most of you wouldn't think that crochet is something I have much knowledge about and you would be right ... but I have to say a crochet top hat that was inspired by a passion for native bees now that is a bit of a show stopper. The great work done by our mates at Hive Haven in Beerburrum has inspired the talented Caroline Springate to create this amazing work and enter it into the Alice Springs Beanie Festival Entries close tomorrow for the people's choice voting and we are keen to support Caroline take out the award for the most favourite beanie. If you have a minute to vote for the #HiveHaven beanie - it would 'bee' appreciated! Click the link & follow the steps!

10.01.2022 In flower now, in one of our reader’s garden, the pretty pink Pom poms of Lilly Pilly Cascade.

10.01.2022 We had a sneak peak yesterday at the set up of the Maleny Spring Fair. It kicks off at 8.30am today at the Maleny Showground .. I'm heading back this morning with my shopping list!! See you there.

09.01.2022 What’s your style of garden? Is it all about the edibles? The traditional flowers? The lawn for the kids, fur and feather babies? Or, like this local reader, are you into your natives? . . #nativegardening #gardeningaustralia #billybuttons #australiannativeflowers #homegarden #homegardening

08.01.2022 Sundew plants are fascinating to look at and have such delicate flowers plus they’re carnivorous, which is awesome in a triffid sort of way. Sundews in their many varieties have held a soft spot in my heart since making them my specialty pressed plant collection in botany at university. This little one comes from the Beerwah Scientific Area off Roys Road.

07.01.2022 This week, I'm really into mushrooms ... here's some I'm picking to use in a Chinese soup on the weekend. They're oyster mushrooms I've grown from a kit. Tell me your mushroom growing stories - tips, successes and failures - for a story I'm putting together for the paper. Love to see photos too.

07.01.2022 The bees are loving all the callistemon in flower in Glass House Mountains right now.

06.01.2022 What’s been popping up in your garden now that it’s spring?

06.01.2022 Spring has definitely arrived at our place - happy to be harvesting my mulberries, can’t wait to dig into my first bowl of the season!

06.01.2022 So what have you got in your garden at the moment? Anything you'd like to show off? The Maleny Show Society and our GC&M News readers would love to see!!

03.01.2022 Bloody hell, not sure how masculine I am looking in my 'Harvesting Apron' but have to say they are a great way to collect the produce from the vege garden and get it into the kitchen. And in case you would like one of your own you can head to the Landsborough Markets today until 1pm and get one from the talented Beerwah CWA stall. Thanks for my thoughtful gift ladies.
