The ginger coat can be seen across many cat breeds, not just domestics including - Abyssinian, Maine Coon, Persian, Oriental, Rex Breeds, Scottish Fold, Manx, American Bobtail and the British, American & Scottish Shorthairs. 5. 22.01.2022 WE ARE STILL OPEN In light of the news that a positive case of COVID-19 has been reported within our neighbouring suburb, we must ensure continuing safety measures are practiced thus some operational procedures have been updated effective immediately. As the situation unfolds and the QLD Health response within the local community evolves, our aim to provide your pets with the healthcare they need remains our priority. To support this, we have made some important changes ac...ross both of our hospitals. Now, more than ever, we need your help in implementing the following measures so that our doors can remain open during this time. Our clinic has reverted to a Client Free Zone with clients no longer permitted to accompany their pets into the building. Please utilise payment over the phone for all transactions where possible. We are continuing our strict and rigid hygiene protocols in house to enhance your safety and ours. If you are feeling unwell, please ask a friend or family member that you have not been in recent contact with to bring in your pet on your behalf. We understand that this is not a perfect scenario and appreciate this might cause some stress and inconvenience for our clients. However this protocol is the best option to make sure we remain here for you and your pet. Our Team very much appreciates your co-operation and thank you in advanced for your support to ensure that practices continue to run smoothly at our hospital. Stay safe everyone

18.01.2022 We Have Exciting News!! Although 2020 has been a tough year, with plenty to navigate, we are pleased with how we have adapted and evolved, not only in response to the world around us, but also within the ranks of our own team. For us, 2020 will also be known as the year that Park Ridge Animal Hospital and Browns Plains Vet Hospital welcomed two new partners into the business. Dr Sheena White and Dr Sasha Savage have signed on as official business partners of our 2 practices.... Most, if not all of you, will know Dr Sheena and Dr Sasha from your visits to either of our hospitals and judging by their appointment schedule always being completely booked out, we know that they are 2 very well liked, admired and trusted veterinarians. Both Dr Sheena and Dr Sasha are extremely knowledgeable and dedicated veterinarians and I am excited that they have become leaders of the PRAH and BPVS families for a long time to come. Kate and I don’t plan on going anywhere, anytime soon. Over the past 16 years of our ownership we have had the pleasure of seeing the business grow and thrive and feel that now is the right time to broaden our management team to help us continue to maintain our levels and standards of care and commitment to our clients and their pets. Kate and I have trust that Dr Sheena and Dr Sasha will join us and continue our vision and our core values that focus on you and your pets. So next time you’re in practice, make sure you congratulate our new partners on this exciting milestone in their careers. Dr Nigel Thomas.

17.01.2022 TOP TICK TIPS Did you know that our cats and dogs can be exposed to ticks even if they never leave their yard? Backyard bandits like possums and bandicoots, or for those on property, wallabies and kangaroos, can bring ticks into your pets environment. We can even bring ticks home on our clothing ~ so even if your pet never leaves home, they can still fall prey to the paralysis tick.... Ticks hide in long grass, scrubs and shrubs, leaf litter and even foliage off-cuts left around the yard. As well as ALWAYS having your pets on regular and efficient tick prevention, here are some tips to minimise ticks about the yard: Minimise or restrict your pets access to bushy environments Clean up leaf litter regularly Clear tall grass from around the house and lawn Keep grass mowed where possible and mow frequently If trimming trees and hedges about the yard, discard of all trimmings immediately, do not store on your property where your pets have access. Be aware. Check your pets DAILY for paralysis ticks. Keep Tick Prevention UP TO DATE. #wesharethecare

15.01.2022 TOP TICK TIPS It is well known that a very common sign of paralysis tick toxicity is weak or wobbly hind legs. But did you know that BREATHING DIFFICULTY is the most deadly symptom? As the paralysis advances throughout the body, the muscles your pet uses to breath also become weak resulting in difficulty breathing. ... This respiratory paralysis can start out as: A change in bark / meow A cough An audible grunt A retch Noisy Panting Sadly, without treatment, these breathing difficulties lead to death. Ticks are serious and they are deadly. Is your pet on prevention? #wesharethecare

12.01.2022 Take your Cat to the Vet Day! Cat owners put your hand up if you get nervous when you have to take your cat to the vet? We feel your pain. Even some of our very own team members struggle with a trip into work with their cats (not mentioning any names, Nurse Kate and Nurse Georgette!) ... Given today is Take Your Cat To the Vet Day, thought we'd share our top tips for travelling to the vet with your feline friends: Make sure your cat has a proper cat cage to travel in. It helps them feel much more secure than travelling in a box. Stay as calm as possible, as cats pick up on and mimic our stress. Bring one of your cats favourite toys or blankets. Unless your cat has to eat for a medical reason, it is generally a good idea to withhold food on the morning of a visit as many blood tests and procedures require fasting. Let your vet know before your visit if your cat gets nervous. Forward planning can help to make the trip as stress-free as possible. #wesharethecare

12.01.2022 Celebrating International Dog Day!! Well the cats have had their day and now it is time to celebrate the quintessential "Man's Best Friend" Theres an endless amount of ways to celebrate National Dog Day. Does your pup love a long walk? Consider taking them on a hike and giving them plenty of time to stop and smell the flowers. ... Do they have a favourite treat you have to hide away in the cupboard? Give them an extra one (or four) when you get home today. Is your perfect pooch your very best friend? How will you celebrate this special day today?

11.01.2022 HAPPY NATIONAL CHOCOLATE DAY ~ Fun Chocolate Facts: Chocolate is actually a vegetable!!... well sort of - Chocolate comes from the cacao bean, which grows on the cacao tree so technically this makes the most important part of the sweet treat a vegetable! White Chocolate is not chocolate - because it doesn't contain cocoa solids or chocolate liquor, white chocolate isn't chocolate in the strict sense. But it does contain cocoa butter.... Cacao was once used as currency - the Aztecs loved and valued the cacao bean so highly that they used it as currency during the height of their civilization ~looks like the tradition of thanking or rewarding someone with chocolate has a rich history. Chocolate is TOXIC to dogs - It is actually a chemical called theobromine contained in chocolate, as well as caffeine that makes it toxic to our pet pals, they simply can’t metabolise these chemicals as well as human’s can. The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate, making different types of chocolate more toxic than others. So enjoy your treat today on National Chocolate Day but please ensure you keep it up and away from any curious canines. #wesharethecare

05.01.2022 Something to keep in mind as we come into Summer

04.01.2022 Spring is well and truly here and you will be noticing lots of little baby birds when out and about. Did you know that when a baby bird jumps out of the nest it takes around 2 weeks for it to fly? This is normal behaviour, baby will remain on the ground and the parents will continue to watch over, teach and feed their baby during this vulnerable time. If you see a baby bird on the ground stand back and watch, you will likely see mum or dad nearby and coming in to feed him s...o it is best to leave baby alone, even if this time alone is a number of hours. If the baby bird appears SICK or INJURED you can bring it to us to be checked over. You MAY be asked to wait while we do this and if the baby bird is in good health we MIGHT ask you to return him back to his mum and dad. Hand raising baby birds is a last resort because while we can arrange for a carer to feed them and keep them warm we can’t teach them vital survival skills such as finding their own food, this is a job that only mum or dad can do. Let's do our best to ensure we are doing the right thing for our native wildlife #wesharethecare

03.01.2022 Today and every year on the second Thursday of September we recognise RU OK DAY at BPVS as a matter of importance. Did you know that Veterinarians are four times more likely to die by suicide when compared to the general population? Our industry loses a vet to suicide about every 12 weeks which we keep at the forefront of our minds as we navigate through the ups and downs of our everyday work caring for animals and their families. 2020 has been a challenging year for ever...yone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. Today is the day to ask those around us R U OK? ~ a meaningful conversation really can save a life. #wesharethecare #ruok

02.01.2022 We will remember them.

02.01.2022 Summer Beach Time Fun! For many of us, the summer holidays wouldn’t feel complete without at least one trip to the beach. But can your dog join you for coastal fun? The answer is yes with some planning: Check online to ensure your beach of choice is dog-friendly. ... Before leading your pet onto the beach, check the temperature of the sand with your hand. If it’s too hot for you to comfortably touch for more than ten seconds, it could burn your pet’s feet. Set up camp under a tree or a beach umbrella, so your dog can seek shade if they need it. Make sure you bring extra water and a portable drinking bowl to keep your pet hydrated. If your dog has pink skin around their nose or eyes, protect them from sunburn by applying some pet-safe sunscreen to these areas. Make sure to reapply sunscreen regularly as per the label instructions! For dogs with pink bellies, consider purchasing a sun-suit to protect this larger area of skin. Unless your dog has excellent recall and will stick close to you, it’s best to keep them secured on-leash to avoid them drinking seawater, eating beach debris or accidentally walking over oyster shells - all common reasons for a post-beach vet visit. Do you have a breed of dog predisposed to heat stress, such as a thick-coated retriever or malamute, or a snub-nosed breed such as a French Bulldog, Bulldog or Pug? In these cases, on a hot day, it’s safest to keep your pet indoors with a fan or air-conditioning, and not exercise them at the beach. With these safety precautions, you and your dog can enjoy some summer sun, sand and surf together. #wesharethecare
