25.01.2022 40yr ANNIVERSARY PART 5 Besides running the office Gay was also handy helping with the freight runs. In the early days she obtained her Light Rigid truck licence (4.5t gvm) so she could drive the Mitsubishi truck (Mrs Fuchi as it was affectionately known) on the local and Perth freight runs for items that wouldn’t fit in the ute. In 1998 she gained her Heavy Rigid licence enabling her to be Mikes co-driver for the local and long-distance trailer and freight deliveries. Mik...e taught Gay to drive the Transtar and like anyone who has had family teach them to drive it had its moments!! The longest trip Mike & Gay undertook was across central Australia to Mt Isa to deliver 3 trailers of mining drill pipe and returned home via Kununurra. They had issues with a faulty batch of trailer brake shoes and with the rough roads a trailer suspension failure. After spending hours on the roadside in the remote outback while Mike did repairs, they finally limped into Alice Springs to buy new brake shoes the team back at BRE were very relieved to hear from them! After heavy rains in the Pilbara, they had the rare experience of driving to Port Hedland and back on flooded Great Northern Highway roads. Between Kumarina & Meekatharra and the Auski Roadhouse to Port Hedland they negotiated many detours around closed roads. When the licence categories changed Gay upgraded to a MC Licence (multi-combination) noting she was fine going forward but reversing wasn’t her favourite direction! #BruceRockEngineering #roadtransport #westernaustralia See more

22.01.2022 Were celebrating our 40th Anniversary and over the next few months well share our journey. The first project for the partnership of Brian Cooper, Dennis Boyanich and Mike & Gay Verhoogt was building a 300m2 workshop at 15 Swan St. The Shire carted the fill and the Apex club laid a concrete floor adding extra thickness in places to level it! Bruce Rock Engineering (BRE) opened its doors on 5th Sept 1980. The first years centred on the Wheatbelts agricultural sector with gen...eral repairs, manufacture of ute & truck trays, grain bins, galvanised panel sheep yards, spray booms and farm sheds. Mike & Gay bought Brian & Dennis shareholding in 81 and here began the Verhoogt family journey. RK Ward contracted BRE to supply and erect the steelwork for the Bruce Rock Recreation Centre involving approx. 90t of steel a huge undertaking for Mike, apprentice Brett Nelson & casuals. This paved the way for other large builds starting with haysheds and the Merredin Truck Centre. Mike toiled away in the workshop, Gay, a registered nurse, ran the office and after Damion was born (May 81) also did the weekend night shift at the local hospital! For many years Mike minded the boys during weekends and they went to the workshop with Gay during the week a typical family business of the day! See more

22.01.2022 40yr ANNIVERSARY PART 2 Materials in the early years were freighted to Bruce Rock by rail and delivered to BRE by local carrier Norm Gillard. With the need to cart fabricated steel and construction equipment the first truck was purchased - a Mercedes 1924 single drive prime mover & with a Freighter 38ft tandem axle trailer. BRE was carting steel and added building products such as mesh and cement to their stock list. The weekly run from Perth involved carting bricks along w...ith freight for the local Wesfarmers agent. To assist with the freight handling & construction Mike built a crane/telehandler using the engine & gearbox from a Landcruiser that had spent its short life of 18mths underground at the Agnew goldmine. Truck front & tractor rear axles, chassis fabricated by BRE and topped off with rear & slew steering! The Merc served BRE well and in 87 was replaced with the K124 Kenworth. Mike rebuilt the trailer to 12.5m with new sides, floor, and new triaxle suspension. The Kenworth was ideal for carting hay and at the height of the wool season there were up to 3 trips a week to Fremantle. Bales were roped down, a tarp added if it looked like rain and tying off a load took a whole lot longer than it does today! #brucerockengineering #transport #wheatbelt #westernaustralia #kenworth #mercedestruck

03.01.2022 40yr ANNIVERSARY PART 3 Design and manufacture of the first BRE grain tipper is yet another demonstration of Mikes ability to look at an issue and solve it After we bought the Kenworth, I hired a tipper and used it to cart grain for several clients. It had a flat floor with a small radius curve, straight sides, a big wide top RHS and the floor used to sag over the rails and the sides would bow outwards when tipping so that the body looked like it could break in half. I ...thought that if we could make a body that was more like a cylinder we would have more strength and less weight. So the first grain semi-tipper was built in 88, trialled for a few months, sold to Alan Sedgwick and it now resides with Ray (Alans son). At 32yrs old its still going strong and was in our Welshpool workshop for maintenance 2 months ago! In 89 Mike & Gay ventured into the tyre business opening MAG Wheels in a shed (now Landmarks) purchased from Mick Nelson on Dampier St. With the addition of MAG Wheels and to accommodate the growing business a larger workshop was needed. Building of the new shed and office adjacent to the workshop at 15 Swan St was completed in Dec 90. MAG Wheels moved in, there was a bay for assembly and painting and, for the moment, plenty of space for the staff of 5. #roadtransport #westernaustralia #wheatbelt #BruceRockEngineering
