25.01.2022 Please phone your elderly family members for a chat This may be a good time to ask some questions about your family history? The elderly are considered 'most at risk' so the advice at the moment is to NOT visit your elderly family members, but please add extra phone calls to them to help them understand during this confusing time for them. A quick (or long) phone call can break the boredom and continually reinforce that they are loved during a time when nobody is vi...siting them. Aged Care Facilities have enacted a higher level of control, which may include the restriction of visiting hours so staff can be at the door to take the temperature of all visitors. They may then provide a sticker to indicate that the visitor does not have a high temperature and has completed the form to confirm some medical details relevant to Coronavirus. Thanks <3 See more

21.01.2022 I presented a talk at the TDDFHS (Toowoomba and Darling Downs Family History Society) today. I feel sure everyone got some tips and tricks to make their event run much better following the talk. If you are planning a Family Reunion or would like to know if someone is planning a Family Reunion for your Surname, click the link and Join this FB Group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/PromoteYourFamilyReunion/

20.01.2022 Hi all I have created a Facebook group called "Promote your Family Reunion". I am preparing a presentation about "Organising a Family Reunion and Publishing a Family Tree Book" for my local family history society and I was considering the question? ... How do you contact extended family members that you do not know?" I covered all the usual ways and also thought a FB group like this would be helpful, so I started it yesterday. Maybe you could join and add any family reunions that you know about. Please also let your friends know about the group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/202693904175475/

13.01.2022 I saw a fridge magnet recently that stated "Genealogy without proof is only Mythology". This is so true and it takes a lot of study to be able to properly source every fact for a family tree. I recently attended my graduation Ceremony for the Diploma of Family History at the University of Tasmania. The Diploma added to my previous experience and I constantly add to this with Webinars and Conferences. You never stop learning in this fascinating field of Family History research. I look forward to working with you on your family history. Contact Bruce today.

10.01.2022 This is a very interesting graphic to understand some of the changes in Australia.

09.01.2022 Be sure to watch this episode of 'Who Do You Think You Are" tonight as my friend did a lot of hard work 'behind the scenes' researching for this episode and some of the filming was done in the Lockyer Valley. Congrats Jacqui :D https://tvblackbox.com.au//tonight-lisa-curry-discovers-/

07.01.2022 There is no end to the learning curve for a family historian. I have recently watched this awesome seminar by a world leader in DNA research in regards to Law Enforcement. I am often asked about this when talking to clients about taking a DNA test. I have a short intro video below FYI. If you are worried, please watch this hour-long webinar as I have because it is very good. The short answer is ... there is nothing to worry about. A longer answer is .... ... In the USA, Law Enforcement uses STRs (Short Tandem Repeats) of DNA to store in a database that they call CODIS (COmbined Dna Index System). If they arrest someone, they take fingerprints and DNA for STR testing. These results are stored in a massive database (CODIS). If they get DNA from a crime scene, they do STR testing and look for a 100% match in CODIS. That is traditional Law Enforcement DNA testing in the USA. Now, ancestry DNA testing uses SNPs, or Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, frequently called SNPs (pronounced snips), which are the most common type of genetic variation among people. Each SNP represents a difference in a single DNA building block, called a nucleotide. For example, an SNP may replace the nucleotide cytosine (C) with the nucleotide thymine (T) in a certain stretch of DNA. Ancestry Autosomal DNA looks for a percentage match to see, firstly, if the 2 samples are related and, secondly, how closely they are related. So, traditional Law Enforcement DNA was searching for a 100% match, but ancestry DNA is a completely different test procedure and it is looking for a percentage match. I am unsure what (or if) DNA testing has been used by Australian Law Enforcement. Please ask if you have any questions about DNA tests. https://www.rootstech.org//dna-genealogy-and-law-enforceme

01.01.2022 I recently completed a writing course and it was brilliant. There are so many reasons for us to write our Life Memories but the most important reason is that we need to do it now before it is too late. The media can use superlatives such as 'unprecedented' on a daily basis and this does nothing but to undermine the value of the words. The COVID19 virus is certainly the "worst thing" to happen to our community since the Spanish Flu in 1919. I hope some positives might come fr...om this terrible situation. Maybe we will all improve handwashing and reduce the amount of influenza. Maybe we will reduce travel due to an increase in the use of teleconferencing. I also hope there may be an increase in the number of people writing their Life Memories so future generations know more about what has happened due to the COVID19 virus. We can no longer trust the media to record important information for us so we need to take control and write our own personal stories. This is continuing the traditions of our ancestors who passed traditions and knowledge down through the generations with the use of stories and oral history. See more
