21.01.2022 I am once again in business assisting people with their taxation needs. We all know there is no substitute for experience when it comes to taxation management, compliance and planning. I have over 30 years operating a high volume tax practice which ensures a sound understanding of the legislation and how the ATO applies it.... Being in touch with changes is also vital - the changes in deductions for investment properties is one area that needs careful navigation. The tax office has made a lot of letting people know what they are targeting, but this isn't the issue. I believe that you should claim all that is allowable - within the bounds established by the legislation - but that you must ensure that you can substantiate it. The key to maximising claims and substantiation is methodical approach to ensure that you record all your expenditure through the year. So much can be missed in a mad scramble at a year's end. Talk to me about how you can maximize your refund.

14.01.2022 I want to reflect on two recent happenings. First, I cleared receipts out of my wallet - all had become blank pieces of paper. Then this morning a retailer offered to email the receipt directly to me. Why are these two events relevant?... The ATO is driving, yet again, on substantiation. The figures they quote as being unsubstantiated or incorrect claims is staggering - billions in lost tax revenue. These are an easy and obvious target for them, helping to increase revenue. Nothing is new here, substantiation has always been a requirement! Yet it couldn't be simpler - the spread of low cost technology has made maintaining good records a breeze. Forget shoe boxes and folders full of receipts. There is printer/scanner attached to most home computers or the camera in your phone - 87% of Australians own a smart phone. These combine with a multitude of apps that will grab the information directly from your bank accounts and credit cards, then sort and categorise transactions automatically. The apps also are a great tools for managing your cash flows - knowing where your money has gone. Want to know more? Visit my website for contact details www.brucejstockdale.com.au

13.01.2022 Are you behind in submitting your personal tax returns? It happens! I have had many people come to me because they are behind in getting their taxes submitted to the ATO.... Time after time the outcome has been positive - often a very healthy refund/s and no fines. With the end of 2017-18 there is another year that can now be added to the list. Get up to date now! Call me on (m) 0410 481 954 or contact me on [email protected]. Not behind call me anyway.

06.01.2022 Experience, knowledge, instinct. What is it that makes an accountant/registered tax practitioner look a bit further when they prepare a client's tax return? A combination of all three.... I completed a tax return for a client this morning and looked at the result - experience, knowledge and instinct made me look a bit further. I reviewed the return submitted last year. The refund was $1,308 less than it should have been, $354 rather than $1662. A simple missed step lead to a tax offset not being calculated by the ATO. A few simple steps for me and the client will soon receive a $1,300 boost in their bank account balance. The ATO provides a DIY option for Australian taxpayers - this client, like thousands of others, has used it for a number of years. Free versus experience, knowledge and instinct can make a big difference. Contact Bruce Stockdale now. 05.01.2022 Now is the time many Australians think about seeing their accountant, think about their tax and usually are dissatisfied with the amount of tax they pay. At this point the accountant is little more than a score keeper This is what happened and this is what the outcome is. The accountants hands are tied.... All the accountants skill, knowledge and experience cant turn back time. But what if you went to see your accountant before the end of the financial year? Typically, our tax laws change when a budget is brought into parliament in May each year, so often a window of opportunity can exist before 30 June. More often, a change is effective in the next financial year. But do you remember last years budget changes? I have just finalised the tax returns for a couple who spoke with me prior to 30 June. Both are middle income earners, mid-50s and looking to retire into the near future. We were able to make personal deductible contributions to superannuation, for both of them, topping up what their respective employers had contributed, bringing them both to the $25,000 maximum. The 2017-2018 year was the first time they could do this. Between them the contribution was in excess of $20,000. Their tax savings were in the vicinity of $4,800. Was it worth the phone call?
