25.01.2022 Well done John and Brumby supporters. Lets hope the count is done speedily and transparently with Brumby supporter involvement.

25.01.2022 Science suppression does not apply to Wild Horses, apparently. A recent Conversation article by Driscoll et al. reports that ecologists and conservation experts in government, industry and universities are routinely constrained in communicating scientific evidence on threatened species, mining, logging and other threats to the environment. The term science suppression was used to hide environmentally damaging practices and policies from public scrutiny which then fa...ils to reach the public, decision-makers or government ministers. The study (just published) found that most University scientists were constrained in talking about feral animals and industry scientists were constrained in commenting on the impacts of mining, urban development and native vegetation clearing. Results confirm our long held suspicions; that reasons why scientists may self-censor their work is to avoid losing career advancements (49%), or we add, future contact work, and confirmed that 60% of Government scientists unduly modify internal communications along with 36% of industry scientists. So why do we never see scientists constrained when speaking on media, Facebook etc. about wild horse issues? Is it because wild horses are the only ferals that scientists are permitted to speak on? Is their loud anti-Brumby rhetoric, in fact, an escape valve for pent up suppression frustration??? If wild horse impacts are the only subject that environmental scientists can speak on in public, this could go a long way to understanding their excessive use of blaming Brumbies as the key (only) threat to native species conservation. And why many other factors we point to are glossed over, such as negative impacts from mining, logging and other threats to the environment. See link below for full article. 25.01.2022 AUSTRALIAN BRUMBY ALLIANCE RAFFLE 2020 ***** FIRST PRIZE ***** Artwork - Yedabila Yakapna Nuratj (Animal Family Dream) Artist Liss Cowan proud Yorta Yorta woman location Mooroopna, VIC Tickets - https://www.raffletix.com.au/admin/org/raffle?ref=h493k... Liss (Melissa) is a proud Yorta Yorta Woman who was born in Shepparton and grew up in Mooroopna, Victoria. Liss wins award for story writing including a story titled Bill the Brumby Liss wrote the story after taking her children to experience the Brumbies in the Barmah National Park, Victoria. Hey Brumby lovers! As a few of you may know I am a Yorta Yorta woman and there was talk that the Yorta wanted the horses out of the Forrest, however my family and I have spoken to a few elders and they WANT the Brumbies to remain in Barmah. Recently, I went for a trip to Bunjilaka (Aboriginal Cultural Centre) and I came across Aboriginal work from first nation people including a gee-am or known as kerreem (spear shield) dated 1870-1920 located in Vic. On this shield was a horses in diamonds and the other one I found was a Kalti paarti (Emu Egg) dates 1990s location was menindee nsw.. So we as aboriginal include the horses into our dream time. We welcome them into the land of Man. 24.01.2022 20 year anniversary of the Guy Fawkes River national park botched aerial shooting that left 12 plus horses to die slowly from their wounds. Most disapointed that Steve Coleman, CEO RSPCA NSW is recorded as saying aerial shooting is less stressfull than passive trapping and rehoming. It would only be worse if the "rehomer" just dogged them. Brumbies with skilled rehomers soon adjust to a new way of life. https://www.smh.com.au//it-was-terrible-work-20-years-on-h

Scott Moore is a descendent of the Wadi-Wadu tribe, from the Yuin nation. The Yuin people originate on the south coast of NSW. Since February 2008 Scott has taken up Aboriginal art and his area of interest is native wildlife. Scott explains why he paints under the name ‘Lily Pilly Inspirations’ My uncle nicknamed my one and only child ‘Lilly Pilly’ and in her honour, I sell my artwork under the name Lilly Pilly Inspirations. My thing is that as a contemporary Aboriginal artist, I paint all sorts of Australian animals as this is my passion, and to share culture. I personally don't have any life experience of working with Brumbies and horses, but I do recognise they have been here for a long time and there are lots of Aboriginal men and women who have been involved with horses, especially while working on stations both now and in the past. 22.01.2022 MEASURING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF FERAL HORSES - ABA-USQ study update In August 2019 The ABA contracted with the University Of Southern Queensland (USQ) to re-balance the science that has been strongly influenced by the anti-Brumby lobby. Most Brumby (feral horse) impact science so far relies on correlative data and weak inferences that actually contain evidence supporting the belief that horses can have both positive and negative environmental impact ... The urgent need to measure BOTH negative & positive impact and possible adverse effects of removing wild horse populations has been called for by many of us, but detailed science is costly. After months of discussion and no government funding, the ABA committed $146,331 & USQ $139,013 (total $285,344 PLUS GST) to a world first study which measures impacts (BOTH positive and negative) of wild/feral horses. LINK https://australianbrumbyalliance.org.au//ABA-USQ-Research- Dr. Berman declared his work for ABA and Forestry & Queensland National Parks when applying for SAP along with his 37 years conducting & reviewing research, advising on and implementing management plans for wild horses in Australia, the USA and New Zealand. The study was originally due to finish by August 2020, but bushfires late 2019/early 2020 delayed the start. Immediately after areas were fire safe, field work began. Then Covid-19 restrictions cut short the trip with sites still to visit. This short study frustratingly is dragging on, now we wait for border restrictions to settle to complete the study. We urgently need donations to pay $50,000 on study completion. We have already paid $100,000. Please help our Brumbies via chuffed https://chuffed.org//join-our-fight-to-save-victorias-alpi or buy a raffle ticket by 26-Jan-21 to receive amazing prizes designed & produced by Australian indigenous artists who also want their children to see our 3 Victorian heritage groups https://www.raffletix.com.au/?ref=h493k Jill Pickering, President, and on behalf of the ABA Committee of Management ---------------------- The Australian Brumby Alliance was formed in 2008 and is a non-profit organisation concerned with the promotion, protection and humane management of Australian Wild horses. 22.01.2022 The Australian Brumby Alliance continues to fund groundbreaking research of the positive impacts Brumbies can have on the environment. ‘Australian literature generally concludes that Brumbies cause damage to the environment but these studies are based on correlative data and weak inferences that actually contain evidence supporting the belief that horses can have positive environmental impact.’ You can read more on the topic on our brand new website:... https://australianbrumbyalliance.org.au/research/

16.01.2022 Im all about transparency and accountability- so lets talk. Join me for a Facebook live Tuesday 21 July at 7pm and ask me anything about our campaigns to pro...tect companions from cruel puppy farming, safeguard brumbies from aerial shooting, and ensure tougher penalties for acts of animal cruelty. Post your questions below- or live on the night. When I was elected, I said I would not be some politician full of empty promises. I said that I plan to do whatever it takes to make changes for animals. Im looking forward to giving you an update on the work weve been doing for animals and the outcomes we have achieved together. All of these campaigns become stronger when we work together - so fire away with your questions and tune in Tuesday night.

15.01.2022 Thanks you Bill Tilley for your strong, proactive support for out Victorian Heritage Brumbies. Please can readers take up Bill Tilleys offer to collect copies of EOI requests you have made, whether you heard any more, etc. https://m.facebook.com//a.1987720369960/1446014562271818/ While the ABAs primary goal is to retain sustainable Brumby populations living wild in their heritage homelands, it is important to provide rehoming options for Brumbies Parks Victoria do trap... which would otherwise be destroyed. The Australian Brumby Alliance is also extremely frustrated to see Government and its agents continue to FALSELY state trapping has been on hold, ESPECIALLY now as now they use this false claim to justify their need to shoot brumbies now! Please be advised that The Hon. Lily DAmbrosio is WRONG to state Since the Federal Court ruled in favour of Parks Victorias feral (wild) horse control program on 8-May-20, trapping and rehoming programs for feral (wild) horses will resume. In FACT Parks Victoria agreed, confirmed by court order, that PV could continue trapping up to 200 Brumbies from the Eastern Alps (similar to previous years) and up to 15 from the new incursion Mt Nelse area during the case hearing. Parks Victorias own records provide evidence that they FAILED to meet either trapping targets.. IN short, the ABA-PV court case did NOT limit Parks Victorias ability to trap, or to progress their rehoming EOI plans. -Jill Pickering See more

13.01.2022 ABA OPEN LETTER TO PARKS VIC ASKING FOR A #NEW #BRUMBY #POPULATION #COUNT The #ABA are requesting a NEW Brumby population post bushfire count. 13.01.2022 Brumby groups call for unity is often derailed by our reactive nature, yet debate is important if we are to move forward as an effective force for the Brumbies. Id like to share my thoughts on ideas to become a uniting voice. Our views arise from local needs, interests and experiences. By sharing and seeking to understand alternative views. ABA groups came together for a common purpose that also acknowledged local differences. Sharing differences then strengthened ABAs coll...ective knowledge. Martin Luther King insightfully said Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Intolerance is discussed in a recent article Is cancel culture silencing open debate? There are risks to shutting down opinions we disagree with.. makes interesting points Id like to share I resonated with its following extracts In a less politicised environment, a contentious claim might be treated as a contribution to a debate to be considered on its merits. But in our current climate, the same claim creates only angry allegations flying in both directions. As a result, the claim isnt considered or debated. Democracy itself assumes citizens can hear different arguments, evidence and perspectives. If significant parts of the political spectrum are no longer tolerated, then social institutions lose this important type of legitimacy. Listening to others with different opinions, and engaging with them, can help us understand their views and develop more informed versions of our own positions. On the flip side, being consistently outraged by opposing viewpoints provides a ready reason not to consider them. This feeds directly into confirmation bias and group-think. What do you think? Maybe a paragraph of your printable view on how to retain sustainable Brumby populations etc.? Food for thought, Jill Pickering ABA

13.01.2022 We welcome this update from the Barmah Brumby Preservation Group after years pushing for sustainable management of Barmahs Heritage Brumbies in the park & highlighting many other species, not Brumbies damaging the park, this is a timely, strategic move to retain Barmahs Brumby heritage. From there she continued competing and training with her own horses as well as starting up her own business, starting and retraining horses which shes been doing for the past 10 years. Tanya believes a horse must be of a sound body and mind in order to start training. Therefore she has a great relationship with the chiro, farrier, dentist and vets to ensure each horse she trains is ready and happy throughout. She works at the horses pace listening to when they may need a break or to be encouraged forward. VBA Brindabella is a bright Chestnut mare who was caught from New South Wales Kosciuszko National Park in late August, 2017. Sadly, Brindabella and her family group were gifted by NPWS to someone who sold them to a third party and they ended up at the Echuca sales less than two weeks after their capture from Kosi. By the time we heard about them, they had been sold through the auction to the Maffra knackery. We were able to purchase them and bring them to safety here at Brumby Junction sanctuary. Shortly after her arrival with us, Brindabella gave birth to a beautiful Strawberry roan filly, VBA Cooma. She has been able to raise her in peace in our larger paddocks prior to coming in for the McDowells Australian Brumby Challenge. APRIL HARVEY AND VBA ONYX April lives in Benalla VIC and began riding before she could walk. She started her first pony at the age of ten following a lineage of generations of family deeply involved in the horse world. April has trained and competed with her own horses, winning numerous State and National titles and representing Australia in Italy and the USA riding at the W-H ranch in Kansas, was recipient of the AQHA Bill Verdugo International Internship to train in Texas April trained VBA Playboy for the 2018 Australian Brumby Challenge. April is devoted to continually advance her horsemanship. Her approach to starting horses is borne of three decades experience in the equine world, along inspiration from the mindfulness practices of meditation and yogic philosophies. April is now based on the family equine facility near Benalla, North East Victoria, starting horses and assisting riders with her understanding of equine psychology and horse/ human behaviours. Aprils passion is developing a solid foundation of a soft, confident, willing and versatile horse that has all of the necessary tools for their future regardless of discipline. VBA Onyx is a stunning jet black mare. She was caught from the Kosciuszko National Park in July 2017. After she arrived at our Brumby Junction sanctuary, she gave birth to a colt foal, VBA Titanium. Once Titanium had been weaned, Onyx went back to our larger paddocks to grow strong and healthy prior to coming in for the McDowells Australian Brumby Challenge. We look forward to following April, Onyx, Tanya and Brindabella throughout the McDowells Herbal Australian Brumby Challenge. #wildtowonderful #heritagebrumby #mcdowellsherbal #australianbrumbychallenge

06.01.2022 AUSTRALIAN BRUMBY ALLIANCE RAFFLE 2020 ***** FIFTH PRIZE ***** Artwork - Brumby White Artist Scott Moore @ Lilly Pilly Inspirations proud Wadi-Wadi man location Brisbane QLD Tickets - https://www.raffletix.com.au/admin/org/raffle?ref=h493k... We are saltwater people, our connection to the land is primarily with the sea. 06.01.2022 DO UNTO OTHERS.. This post might be an unpopular one, but we hope that people will read it, maybe share it and we would love your kind feedback on it. There is... a series of posters being circulated on social media many individuals and groups have shared them, including people that we respect deeply. This post isnt us having a go at anyone who has shared it, it is partly us sharing why we wont share those posters and partly a request to all of the wonderful Brumby supporters and advocated out there. The posters have some graphic photos. We know that they are hard to look at, but it is important that people see exactly what fate awaits our Brumbies. Death is really uncomfortable for us, but it is much much worse for them. Our problem with the posters is that they personally target individuals. In the very recent past, this approach has lead to really horrific personal targeting of both NPWS staff and their families and their children. Politicians choose a path of public life they are voted in by the public and they work for and are answerable to the public. Staff at NPWS are in their jobs because they are passionate about our National Parks. They go to work like the rest of us and they do the very best that they can. They work within the framework of the Office of the Environment and Heritage and sure, they have some ability to make changes etc within that framework. They have the option of working with community advocates and learning from both science and community. Our president has regularly over the course of the last 13 years, been personally targeted both by those for and those against Brumbies. She has had her face, her address and personal details shared on social media. This has lead to threats against her personally and against her family and property. This is really scary stuff!! It just isnt on. We have always aimed for a positive, respectful social media presence. We will always work towards building respectful relationships with other groups and government organisations such as NPWS, Parks Vic etc. That does NOT mean that we will agree with them we will often disagree. However, in order to effect change, we know that we need to be AT the table working WITH others. Respectful disagreements lead to conversations which lead to change. Personal targeting is an intimidation tactic which shuts down all conversation. That doesnt help our Brumbies. No one ever said advocacy was easy. No one ever said that there is only one way. We believe that there are many ways, the recent Brumby rallys held in Melbourne and Mansfield, the fact that we have Brumby Advocates on Government run Round Table Groups. The rescues out there who are building sanctuaries, the advocates training in fertility control, those donating, those writing letters and those helping our Brumbies in many other ways all prove this. Our President and Vice President attended a Wild Horse Fertility Control seminar in the USA last year and we were blown away by the really successful programs. In every case, there was a determined teaming together of the Government (BLM), scientists and local Advocacy groups. These teams effected change and were a model for others. They worked together, recognising that healthy wild horses needed healthy ecosystems and they were resoundingly PROUD of each other and themselves as a team. They were excited to share what they had accomplished. Please keep in mind the many ways that kindness has been called for throughout history, from do unto others as you would have them do to you from the Bible, to when they go low, we go high from Michelle Obama. Please be a positive force for our Brumbies start conversations, dont end them. You just never know what might be behind the doors you dont open. Photo: Brumby mare and foal at Kiandra, KNP, NSW. 06.01.2022 PARKS VICTORIA. STOP SHOOTING HORSES!! #StopTheShoot It is Springtime, when new life fills the Alpine National Park with joy and excitement. Wild horses inhabit the park, and currently mares are pregnant, have given birth or about to, they are incredibly vulnerable. There are foals in the National Park who are innocent, weeks old and suckling of their mother who is about to be shot in the head by contract shooters hired by Parks Victoria. Parks Victoria today announced via ...email that they will commence shooting of horses in the Alpine National Park. They gave no details of the shoot, the method, how many, what the evidence was, nor was there any community consultation period. Standard Operating Procedure for Shooting of Feral Horses states: (Aerial shooting) To minimise the animal welfare implications of leaving dependent foals to die a slow death from starvation, it is preferable not to run aerial shooting programs when mares have dependent young at foot. (Ground Shooting) The optimal period for ground shooting is during dry seasons or droughts, when many groups of horses are forced to congregate around areas with limited access to water and feed. Parks Victoria will shoot during Spring time when mares have foals at foot in direct contravention of the Standard Operating Procedures. Parks Victoria have routinely operated under a code of secrecy and flawed information to justify their killing campaigns. The CSIRO states: Contemporary horse management requires full public transparency Parks Victoria rely on information to justify their reasons for killing wild horses, however, the result of FOI requests by the ABA have proven that these documents do not exist....
