25.01.2022 If you were on the M1 on Thursday in the early morning, you may have been held up by a truck across the road that had rolled over. While there were many jobs to be done by emergency crews, our concern was to stop the spilled liquids from contaminating the environment. To see a vehicle this size on its side like a dead bug is always a stunning experience, and one that makes you realise how, while travelling in our cars, changing conditions can bring us very close to a catastrophe. Drive carefully out there, folks! #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

25.01.2022 During a recent drill, we practised getting to work with a 38mm hose using different pressure ranges.

23.01.2022 Last night, we were called to a much-loved Brunswick Heads business, where a small fire had ignited. Thankfully, no one was harmed and the property was saved. #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

22.01.2022 Fire and Rescue NSW Station 240 Brunswick Heads helped residents in the recent floods, pumping water off properties in New Brighton. #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

21.01.2022 We were called to a car accident in Brunswick Heads a few nights ago. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt. #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

21.01.2022 The other day, the big breathing apparatus training truck (affectionately called BA truck by firefighters) was up from the Big Smoke at Brunswick Heads Fire Station as it was time to get certified in our ability to use this vital piece of firefighter personal protective equipment, our self-contained breathing apparatus. With our breathing apparatus, we can simply breathe clean air in toxic environments, caused by anything from smoke from house or car fires, hazardous material...s in the open, or as a precaution in situations where the atmosphere may be at risk of becoming contaminated. It is also a piece of equipment that sets us "townies" from Fire + Rescue NSW apart from most of the NSW RFS "bushies'" fire brigades. The semitrailer BA truck simulates a housefire environment with near zero visibiltiy through smoke, dummies that resemble casualties in size and weight, and a lot of obstacles like tables, beds, openings, and doors that can be arranged as the trainer sees fit. Firefighters need to put their training to the test by navigating the environment according to the procedures for a Search & Rescue operation and locate and move the "casualties" to the safe area. We always welcome the chance to get geared up and test our skills with the BA, as it is not often that we can do so in a challenging, but safe environment :) #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

21.01.2022 Bruns firefighters are today standing by at Tweed Heads station supporting the region fighting the Cudgen Leagues club fire.

20.01.2022 Last month, we helped by putting in a few shifts to combat a recent fire incident in a Murwillumbah timber silo, which re-ignited after a major extinguishing effort. Silo fires can be very difficult to combat because of the sheer amount of flammable materials in a confined space, which can make the seat of the fire very difficult to reach. #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

20.01.2022 A camper van rolled into the Brunswick River overnight this week, and Brunswick Heads Firefighters helped remove the environmental hazard. Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident. 18.01.2022 As we are going through a slightly damper period, floodwaters affected an apartment block in Byron Bay the other day, where we were able to help out temporarily, before the heavy equipment from Coffs Harbour was called in. The firefighter on the left is applying tape to keep track of the water levels over time. Firefighter Dan is showing some rescue equipment.... #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

18.01.2022 For the third time in the last week, we attended an accident scene. This time, just South of Mooball, the driver of the ute lost control and the vehicle smashed into a power pole and ended up in the creek. Incredibly, no one was seriously hurt, and we only had to relocate some baby turtles who were found during the incident. Slow down folks, we want you to come home safely.... #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

18.01.2022 A very useful comparison of the types of wildfire and how they may impact your property.

17.01.2022 The other day, while on our way to the supermarket... no, this did not happen in Brunswick Heads. Just another drill idea from the training department ;)

17.01.2022 This week, Brunswick Heads firefighters attended a house fire on Tweed Valley Way. Some of the challenges we were facing were the great distance from the fire station, the steep terrain, and the considerable distance from a hydrant for a steady water supply. Thankfully, no one was hurt. #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

16.01.2022 Last week, a community member called 000 to notify emergency services of a package in a field suspected of containing asbestos. As the designated agency for working with hazardous materials that pose a risk to people, property or the environment, we received the call-out to examine the site. Unfortunately, it really was asbestos. From the NSW government WorkCover website: " .... when asbestos containing products are disturbed by cutting, drilling, water blasting or similar ...activities, small fibres may be released into the air. These fibres are harmful if inhaled and may lead to asbestos related diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer or mesothelioma. Around 4000 Australians die every year from asbestos related diseases, that’s double the road toll." We are always concerned about asbestos anywhere, and our crew went to contain the threat to the environment in protective suits. Fire and Rescue NSW Station 468 Tweed Heads HAZMAT supported us, as with most incidents involving hazardous materials, and you can see Captain Wakely using some low pressure water from our small hose reel to bind the asbestos dust from becoming airborne. Folks, it is NOT ok to dump asbestos anywhere. Call a contractor or take it to an accredited waste facility yourself (Byron Shire Council cannot accept asbestos) - you will be able to find some resources here: https://www.startpage.com/do/dsearch and the EPA has a list of facilities that accept asbestos here: https://www.epa.nsw.gov.au//facilities-accept-household-as #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

14.01.2022 A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) pumper snapped during a recent break near a European furniture shop.

13.01.2022 Recently, we were called to the scene of an accident on the M1 near Pottsville, where a caravan overturned. We provided protection from a possible fire and hazardous materials, for example spillages of fluids from the vehicles. Thankfully, seat belts save lives and no one was seriously hurt. 13.01.2022 Members of Brunswick Heads Fire Station are out and about in Ocean Shores and Brunswick Heads over the next few weeks in the interface of town and bushland answering questions, checking hydrants, identifying Static Water Supplies (SWS), e.g. swimming pools and water tanks, for emergencies. 10.01.2022 BRUNSWICK HEADS | Fire and Rescue NSW Station 240 Brunswick Heads and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 468 Tweed Heads crews attended the scene of an incident invol...ving a car submerged in the Brunswick River this morning. Crews were called to a boat ramp on the Old Pacific Highway just after 8am after a car rolled from the ramp into the water. FRNSW HAZMAT crews deployed a boat to monitor the water for possible fuel leaks while they waited for Marine Rescue NSW to arrive and assist with removing the car from the water. The vehicle was retrieved from the water at approximately 1:30pm, as Marine Rescue assisted in attaching a tow line. There was no one inside the vehicle and there were no injuries. : Station 240, Brunswick Heads #FRNSW #PreparedForAnything #MoreThanFire

08.01.2022 Our new firefighting protective uniforms have arrived at Brunswick Heads fire station! Being one of the first NSW fire stations to use the new firefighting ensembles, our firefighters David, Paul, Dan, Lui and Marty are showing off the new gear. As well as the obvious dangers of heat, firefighters are exposed to toxic fumes, sharp objects, uneven ground, slippery surfaces, biological fluids, spilt chemicals and electricity.... Because of this, firefighting uniforms need to provide the best protection possible for our firefighters. Firefighting ensembles are known as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). A firefighter's tunic is made from a combination of fire resistant, synthetic fabrics which means it remains usable after fire exposure, and resists cuts and tears. It provides a high level of protection from high temperatures (up to 600 to 1,000C in a worst case scenario) without being overly heavy to wear. Some of the new features of our new Xflex structural firefighting ensembles: Ergonomically designed, tapered body shape New collar and tab to provide optimal compatibility with helmet and fire hood Better shoulder shape enabling full rotations in shoulder and upper arm, even when wearing breathing apparatus Shoulder seam removed for better comfort, also with wearing breathing apparatus More reflective areas Higher zip for neck protection Larger jacket pockets and secret under zip pocket Sleeve hem curved for additional protection ergonomic knee and elbow shaping More flexible reinforcement fabric #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

06.01.2022 A very small malfunctioning battery charger led to a lot of smoke and a smouldering fire in a shed in Brunswick Heads the other day. Luckily, someone was in the house to notice it in time and did the best thing anyone could have done - call 000. #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

05.01.2022 On Tuesday night, we attended to a call at the Coles supermarket in Ocean Shores, where a part of a collapsed roof structure activated the fire doors. This damaged a pipe within the automatic sprinkler system, which led to extensive flooding of the interior. The building was evacuated, and about an hour later, specialists were able to turn of the water supply. Luckily, no one was hurt :) #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2

02.01.2022 On Sunday, it was time to say "Good Bye" to Stan, one of Brunswick Fire Station's finest firefighters. Stan served at Fire and Rescue NSW Station 240 Brunswick Heads for 23 years and seven months, and will be sorely missed for his outgoing, friendly nature, professionalism, being a great firefighter, and a good mate. To be able to see him every once in while, FRNSW made him an honorary member of Station 240 Brunswick Heads. We celebrated with current and former colleagues and family with a BBQ lunch. All the best, Stan! #preparedforanything #MoreThanFire #BrunswickHeads #OceanShoresNSW #BrunswickHeads240 #FRNSW #EmergencyServiceFamily #FireAndRescueNSW #FRNSWMEDIA #FRNSWRN2
