25.01.2022 ‘Balun Budjaram’ - River Story | 120 x 60cm acrylic on stretched canvas | A commissioned piece for @bruns.osteo that acknowledges the Bundjalung traditional owners of the land and sea, who have thrived and lived sustainably with this land for thousands of years. The work depicts the Brunswick Heads river which is a scared place for Bundjalung Aboriginal people. The flowing travel lines across the work represent Bundjalung people’s journeys, who have walked and lived in an in...trinsic relationship with this Country- both the land and the ocean for thousands of generations. The colours and detailed patterns flowing down the canvas represent the river, Saltwater Country and midden sites. Middens are common along the river due to the regular tribal gatherings that took place. These sites contain various types of seafood shells and those that are remaining have important cultural significance. The concentric circles and meeting place symbols represent the gatherings and many stories the river holds. The river was a meeting place for ceremonial and trade purposes and there was a steady source of food and other resources to trade. The rivers and waterways are bound spiritually, culturally and historically to Bundjalung people.
