24.01.2022 With new arrivals from Buku-Larrgay Mulka launching very soon, we thought we would share one of our favourites from our current collection. Dhatam by Malaluba Gumana represents Garrimala, a billabong near the artists residence, the Dhawau clan homeland at Gäga. It is a sacred site for the artists mothers Gälpu clan. But this imagery really refers to perhaps the oldest continuous human religious iconographical practice- the story of the Rainbow Serpent. Estimates... vary from 40,000-60,000 years on the depictions of the Rainbow Serpent in West Arnhem rock shelters. Wititj is the all powerful rainbow serpent (olive python) that traveled through Gälpu clan lands and on further, during the days of early times called Waarr. Djayku the Javanese filesnake is a companion and possibly alternate incarnation of Wititj, living in amongst the Dhatam, or waterlillies, causing ripples and rainbows (Djari) on the surface of the water (one reference in the cross hatch). The story of Wititj is of storm and monsoon, in the ancestral past. It has particular reference to the mating of Wititj during the beginning of the wet season when the Djarrwa (square shaped thundercloud) begin forming and the lightning starts striking. The Gälpu clan minytji (sacred clan design behind the lillies) represents Djari (rainbows) and the power of the lightning within them. It also refers to the power of the storm created by Wititj, the diagonal lines representing trees that have been knocked down as Wititj moves from place to place. The ribs of the snake also form the basis of the sacred design here. The sun shining against the scales of the snake form a prism of light like a rainbow. The arc which a snake in motion travels through holds to a rainbow shape but causes the oily shimmer to refract the colours of the rainbow. The power of the lightning is made manifest when they strike their tongue. The thunder being the sound they make as they move along the ground. Image: Dhatam, Malaluba Gumana, screenprint, 60x50cm (artwork) 70x60cm (paper) $325. See more

21.01.2022 FROM WARMUN ART CENTRE: MABEL JULI "I started painting when the old girl [Queenie McKenzie] was here she was the one who taught me to paint. She told me, You try that painting, and I started to paint. I was doing that Garnkiny [Moon]; thats the painting I started with because my mother and father told me that Ngarranggarni [Dreaming] story. I was reminded of all those stories from my mum and dad like Gelinggenayin Hill and the Old Woman Singing Out for Her Dog. Th...ose stories come from my country. And I always remember those stories. I got em in my brain. Mabel Juli Renowned for her black and white depiction of Garnkiny doo Wardel (Moon and Star), Mabel Juli's works portrays an important Ngarranggarni (Dreaming) story that explores forbidden love, kinship and the origins of our mortality. 21.01.2022 STOCKROOM SPOTLIGHT: MARION ABRAHAM Our latest Stockroom Spotlight is with painter/sculptor Marion Abraham, whose work continually expresses the blurred lines of aestheticism, creating worlds rich with the beautiful, the grotesque, and the poetry in between. Oh Sky! Oh Earth! Oh Heroic Animal, Wretched History and Beautiful Body!... Marion Abraham's practice is an extension of her experience in the natural world. Her work carries the signifiers of bygone eras and old lands. Traditional power structures and gender roles are reimagined in Marion's work: she loves the humorous, the violent and the beautiful. I paint because it is a beautiful and intriguing way to tell stories, start fights, make jokes, gush beauty and question the way the world works. 21.01.2022 STOCKROOM SPOTLIGHT: NEW WORKS BY CHLOE CADAY Having previously showcased Chloe Caday earlier this year, we are excited to bring you her latest paintings. Drawing deeply on her Filipino/Australian roots, Chloe explores her relationship to the land, most notably her historical, cultural and spiritual connections to place. These places include She Oaks (Victoria) and personally significant sites in the Philippines including Pililla, Bohol and Siquijor. Painting on-sit...e allows her to directly experience and absorb her environment, which then begins her process of re-interpreting the landscape. Her use of gestural mark making and responding to and mimicking the movement and sound of the landscapes in which she paints is a central technique to her practice. She acknowledges the ability of the landscape to hold forgotten histories, inspire stories, and inform and shape culture. Throughout my work, I often explore the constantly evolving idea of place and identity and how this affects the way we perceive our world. Chloe Caday Chloe Caday pays homage to the cultural and spiritual significance of our natural environment. Being both universally appealing, and immensely personal to the artist, we hope you love these works as much as we do. View the whole collection via our website. 15.01.2022 ARTIST PROFILE: KIM PASSALAQUA Our latest Artist Profile is with artist Kim Passalaqua, whose exhibition Landmarks is currently presented at Brunswick Street Gallery. Kim Passalaqua is an artist who has immersed herself in the topography of Australias landscapes in recent years and as our climate has hardened, Kims inclination has become more abstract. ... The natural processes of erosion and weather create a canvas, which is always changing. The colours, shapes, patterns and tones become the visual cues to create landscapes from these ancient surfaces. Kim draws inspiration from the beauty of local landscapes and also the harsh beauty of the raw Australian outback. Read more via our website. Landmarks is current until 7 July. See more
15.01.2022 NEW STOCKROOM ARRIVALS: VOULA CHRISTOPOULOS We’re pleased to announce new arrivals in the Stockroom from Melbourne artist Voula Christopoulos. We were first introduced to Voula’s serene and contemplative paintings through Brunswick Street Gallery’s ‘Emerge’ exhibition series in October of last year.... Painting for her, is a way of interpreting and expressing her emotional response to the subject matter that she is working on. The work is focused on memories, dreams and the subconscious and she explores this idea through the domestic interior where dreams and memories are created. Her paintings are familiar, intimate glimpses of an interior space that could evoke a memory in most of us. They are not always fully described, allowing them to be open to interpretation, which makes them both familiar and vague, like a fragmented recollection of a dream or memory. Voula’s collection of oil paintings are now available through our Stockroom. www.brunswickstreetgallery.com.au/stockroom Artworks: ‘A Moment Of Thought’, oil on linen, 51x51cm $350. ‘Time Away’, oil on linen, 51x51cm $350. ‘Revisited Space‘, oil on linen, 51x51cm $350.

15.01.2022 ‘Throughout my work, I often explore the constantly evolving idea of place and identity and how this affects the way we perceive our world.‘ Chloe Caday is an emerging painter currently based in She Oaks, Victoria. Her practice focuses on contemporary culture and explores the spatial relationship within urbanised and natural environments. Drawing inspiration from her Filipino roots, her recent paintings studies the importance of travel and connection to the land as it ...signifies the historical, cultural and spiritual connections within place. Working primarily outdoors allows her to utilise her immediate surroundings to inform her work and using oil to create gestural markings to capture her presence in the paintings. Movement and sound are an important focal point throughout her work as it highlights the presence of the landscape and the people that tell stories of forgotten histories and culture. 10.01.2022 NEW TO THE STOCKROOM: WARMUN ART CENTRE COLLECTION Were excited to announce that a range of prints from Warmun Art Centre, (Turkey Creek) Western Australia, have just arrived in our Stockroom! Featuring works by renowned artists Rammey Ramsey, Mabel Juli, Mr Peters, Gordon Barney and Peggy Patrick. Warmun Art Centre is one of Australias leading Indigenous art centres operating from the remote Aboriginal community of Warmun (Turkey Creek), WA. It is owned and gover...ned by the Gija people. Established in 1998 by the founding members of the contemporary painting movement in Warmun, including Rover Thomas, Queenie McKenzie, Madigan Thomas and Hector Jandany, elders recognised and responded to the need for a community owned and operated centre through which they could support, maintain and promote Gija art, language and culture throughout the world. In the remarkable Mr Peters Three Nyawana in Yariny Country, (pictured), a white crescent moon sits amongst a starlit sky, shining brightly above the trees. Three Nyawana in Yariny Country depicts a dialogue between the moon Garnkiny, and the three Nyawana (women) of Garnkiny skin, as represented by the three trees. Garnkiny wanted to marry a Daawul, who was also his mother in-law, despite that this type of relationship traditionally referred to as Lambarra, is forbidden as he was supposed to marry her daughters. Feeling ashamed, he walked off and turned into Garnkiny, cursing everyone and said, you can be anything, a tree, a rock ... He turned some into trees, (and) thats them there, them Nyawana them trees. 08.01.2022 NEW STOCKROOM ARRIVALS: VOULA CHRISTOPOULOS Were pleased to announce new arrivals in the Stockroom from Melbourne artist Voula Christopoulos. We were first introduced to Voulas serene and contemplative paintings through Brunswick Street Gallerys Emerge exhibition series in October of last year.... Voulas collection of oil paintings are now available through our Stockroom. www.brunswickstreetgallery.com.au/stockroom Artworks: A Moment Of Thought, oil on linen, 51x51cm $350. Time Away, oil on linen, 51x51cm $350. Revisited Space, oil on linen, 51x51cm $350.

08.01.2022 Throughout my work, I often explore the constantly evolving idea of place and identity and how this affects the way we perceive our world. Chloe Caday is an emerging painter currently based in She Oaks, Victoria.
