25.01.2022 This is the slice recipe that childhood memories are made of. The ingredients are all pantry staples and its pretty easy to whip up. The problem is that it doesn't last long in the cake tins so be prepared to be making this on a regular basis. The combination of a chewy, oaty, chocolate base with a simple chocolate icing wins them over every time.

24.01.2022 It's as simple as ticking a box!! Then tell us if you want gift wrapping, want to add a personalised note or need to give us special instructions. We'll do the rest!!

22.01.2022 Meet Cara from @carascrazycreations Cara is a recipe developer and soon to be nutritionist. Wish her luck with her final exams. Cara discovered us last month and has been having a great old play around with our gorgeous fresh oats. She's developing a couple of recipes for us to share with you - woo hoo!! Watch this space because the first one is going to land in your feed next week and I reckon its going to be a bit of a weekend hit.

22.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago I received an email from a happy but slightly concerned customer who made comment on how much sticky tape I used on her package. It's true - I do use my fair share but I'm also happy to say that the tape that I use is Landfill Biodegradable. I'm sure there are probably other options out there that are even more environmentally friendly but @BioGoneAustralia (the brand I use) has great tackiness and is strong and durable. I first got onto @BioGoneAu...stralia after recommendation of another of my customers late last year. I placed my first order with them and got busy taping up boxes and parcels. A bit of time went by and I'd worked my way through about 26 rolls of tape and I got a phone call from BioGone to see how I was getting on with their product. The caller was so lovely, told me all about the team of 11 that he employed in his family owned business and went on to offer me a wholesale discount on the tape. I tell you all of this for a number of reasons: 1. Customer service is paramount and BioGone absolutely nailed it for me. If you are after more environmentally responsible plastics (from snap lock bags to dog waste bags, bin liners to cling wrap...) these are your guys. I'm giving them this plug because their customer service is top notch. 2. I care about the environment and I know a lot of you do too. Not everything can be recycled and when you are after a plastic that you know is going to end up landfill then isn't it best if it is going to eventually breakdown. 3. I don't want you to panic when you see that I've gone a little overboard with the packing tape on your order. I just don't want there to be a little trail of fresh oats all the way from my farm to your kitchen table (they don't need to find their way back to me like Hansel and Gretel) 4. If you think we could be doing something better please feel free to let me know - I don't know if I would have ever found BioGone if it hadn't been for the suggestion from one of my own happy customers. Now you know you can peel the tape off your order packaging and pop it in the bin and in time it will biodegrade. Kx

21.01.2022 Yes - fresh oats do need to be kept in the fridge (or freezer) in a sealed container. We want you to enjoy them right down to the last grain so we don't want them to go stale or even rancid before you finish the packet. We used to dispatch our 1kg bags with a vinyl label that could be easily removed to pop on your container ensuring you always have the cooking instructions handy. However, we shifted to paper labels late last year to further reduce our environmen...tal impact. This does make it a bit trickier to remove the label from the bag so if you want a spare label put in with your order just let me know - its no bother at all. Just put a wee note on the delivery instructions and I'll make sure it happens - just one of the things that we do to make your life easier. You are most welcome!! . 20.01.2022 Feeling soooo loved right now!! Just had a phone call from a lady by the name of Kathryn who saw my TP plight. As I write she is driving from Wagga to put some toilet paper in my letterbox - sooo kind!! She didn’t want money so I went for a walk around the garden and picked her some pomegranates and some capsicums - not much on offer in my garden. I took a walk to the letterbox to leave my little bag of goodies at the gate for Kathryn. When I got to the letterbox I found t...hat another angel had already been past and had left me 6 rolls of toilet paper with a gorgeous note. Now I feel slightly guilty and very well stocked with toilet paper. As I walked back to the house I had tears in my eyes. We see so much in the media about how this crisis is bringing out the worst in people. But it also brings out the very best. I don’t blow my own trumpet but I know I am a nice person. I know I do lots of things for others and I am not selfish. So I truly believe that good things happen to good people. Be kind to others and when you need it most, kindness and goodness come right back to you. Thank you Toilet paper fairy (I don’t know who you are) and thank you Kind Kathryn xxxxx

20.01.2022 I'm calling it - porridge season is officially open!! Some of our biggest fans are the older generations - your Mum, Nanna or Gran. When they discover Brushwoods oats they ring me or write to me and tell me how excited they are that our oats have invoked so many childhood memories of deliciousness. This was a snippett of the conversation with Heather:... ".. If they taste exactly like I remember as a child (I'm 71) I will be in seventh heaven. " "Absolutely a very big tick from me and I will recommend them to whoever will listen to me lol. They did not disappoint." A message from Peter: "My elderly mother has been staying with us and cannot get get enough of your porridge. We are now a crucial link in her supply chain as she doesn't do online shopping herself. She is a huge fan!!" Phone call from Gail went something like this: "I don't have a computer so I want to just ring you and tell you my order over the phone when my supply is running low. Will that be okay?" For me there is just something beautiful about helping to make the start to someones day a wee bit more special - I really get a kick out of it. I love talking to the oldies and hearing about their childhood memories of standing on a stool to stir porridge, about missing the cream off the top of the milk can because they were the youngest, how they remember how good real oats taste... So, I'm thinking that with Mothers Day coming up, maybe you need to treat your Mum/Gran/Nan/Nonna to one of lifes simple pleasures. If she is a porridge lover jump on line and place an order for her. Tell me its a gift and I can put a personalised note in with the order. I can even gift wrap the order for her. It will be a gift that she can enjoy morning after morning.

19.01.2022 Here's hoping the shelves at your local are fully stocked again. Definitely not the case here - it seems that our little regional supermarkets just aren't getting the deliveries. The lower turn over means we aren't priority. So, I didn't panic buy - I figured it would all settle down. I can see who's laughing now and its not me as I have just cracked my last roll of toilet paper. Nevertheless, my world will not end when I run out, I will survive. I hope those of you who have more than 30 rolls in one house are happy though. Thank goodness I am the only girl in a house full of men.

18.01.2022 Are you hearing me? Seriously though - how are you coping? Are you relishing in the little things in life or are you screaming 'make it stop'? Here at Brushwoods HQ, we're doing fine. We are super grateful to not be living in an apartment (my heart goes out to those who are). We feel crazy lucky to not be living in a hot spot. And we are blessed to have a list of jobs the length of my left arm to keep everyone busy and occupied. ... I am personally loving having my troop around me - although the demands on the kitchen, laundry and cleaning cupboard have increased about four fold. I think I am blessed to be able to find the good in most things - its a disposition that not everyone is lucky enough to have. I also understand that some people are doing it so tough that finding the positive is really challenging. If you fall into that category please just know that nothing lasts for ever. Good will come again, sometimes you just have to be patient and sometimes you have to make it happen. I was once taught that "if you don't like it change it" and "if you can't change it, change the way you think about it". There is a level of guilt that comes with saying "I'm doing great" when I know that so many people are struggling. If you are one of those, I hope that this post helps to give you the strength to get through this tough time. Sending love and well wishes. Kx

18.01.2022 Our little moats have been marching out the door over the past few weeks. Seems like they are going to be appearing in many gifts and hampers this Christmas. Super grateful that our customers love our oats so much that they feel inclined to tell all their friends about them. I don't know if you've ever really thought about it but this is the way I see it. The more support we show to our favourite small businesses the more likely they are to survive into the long term. Th...at means we get to keep enjoying their products well into the future. More support doesn't mean buying more - it means introducing more people to the product. We would not be where we are today without the support of our customers who are soooo good at shouting us out from the rooftops. To all of you have helped us to grow Brushwoods - thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!

18.01.2022 LOOK OUT!! Something crazy exciting is coming. While I've been flat out pruning 800 olive trees (still 180 to go) something has been happening behind the scenes. Oat addicts - this one is for you!! But wait there's more - there's a chance to win some liquid gold as well. All will be revealed very very soon.

16.01.2022 Bit proud of myself!! I've built a "hen highway". Our chickens live in a coop to keep them safe. Mainly to keep them safe from Gary - he can't help himself. If the chickens are left to roam freely he spends all day rounding them up and putting them back in the coop. There is a stretch of about 9 metres between the coop and the olive grove and I've always wanted the chickens to have free access to wander in the grove but they need to be able to make it back to the coop for water, and nesting. So, I made a chicken tunnel so that they can come and go as they please. Its the bomb. Check out my stories for some pics of the girls using their new highway. cred Down brushwood road

15.01.2022 When you fall in love with a product, do you gift it? I do!! Its like I want all my loved ones to fall it in love with the product as well. I want the producer to get new customers and be more successful because I want them to be around for the long haul. Over the past 6 months the volume of gifted oats through our online store has increased dramatically so we've made it super simple - just tick the gift box and tell us if you want the order gift wrapped and any personalise...d notes you want added. Some of our customers get so excited when they taste our oats that they want to share the love. I've really noticed a jump in the number of gifts being sent to older generations and folk who don't do online shopping themselves and aren't likely to discover us through Google, Facebook and Instagram. The beautiful thing is that we are all winners - you get the 'brownie points' for being so thoughtful, your loved one gets to experience or rediscover what oats really taste like and how creamy they are and we get increased exposure and your rave reviews. For that we are SUPER GRATEFUL!! Thank you!!

14.01.2022 Making Anzac biscuits is a tradition that Australians and New Zealanders use to commemorate Anzac day. Everyone has their favourite recipe and there are countless arguments over whether they should be served crunchy or soft. The true origin and invention of the Anzac biscuit is not known for sure but it is commonly believed that they were often included in small parcels of luxuries and comforts sent to soldiers overseas by families and charities. The Anzac biscuit is a s...weet biscuit made from rolled oats and golden syrup and importantly wasn't made with eggs which gives them a reasonable shelf life for transportation. Are you and Anzac biscuit baker? We have them regularly throughout the year but I always make sure there is a tin full of them on Anzac day.

12.01.2022 To all of our Wagga Wagga and surrounds customers - this one is for you. Did you know that the Riverina Producers Market (RPM) now has an online/virtual market as well as the physical market held every Thursday (Hammond Hall, Wagga Wagga Showgrounds). I really think that the RPM is one of the success stories to come out of Covid-19. All of a sudden people have realised that there is value in hunting out local producers. The RPM gathers them all in one place for you - what a...re you after? Beef, lamb, pork, fish, vegetables, honey, fruit, seedlings, cheese, artisan breads, preserves, grains, alcohol, chocolate (and the list goes on....). Of course, its been lovely during lock down because a Thursday afternoon outing has been rather delightful but with lots of people heading back to work and lives starting to get busy again the RPM committee have come up with a solution so you don't have to miss out on this amazing local produce. You can now place your order online and can select to have it delivered to your door (5pm-7pm) or you can pick up from Hammond Hall between 3:30 and 5pm - WINNING!! The flip side of all of this is that the producers that just can't attend the Thursday markets (that includes Brushwoods) can still make all their beautiful products available to you so the range of goodies is even bigger. I think this is an amazing initiative and hope you agree. Jump on line and have a look at everything that is available. You will be wowed!! https://riverinaproducersmarket.com.au/

12.01.2022 Its the inaugural "National Buy Aussie Day" Surely we don't need a designated day each year to support Australian makers, producers, manufacturers and growers. Don't get me wrong - I'm all for it but I really think that we need to constantly thinking about Aussie, Aussie, Aussie if we are serious about playing our role in the recovery mission for the Australian economy. We all play a role and sometimes its easy to think your impact might be less than significant. ...Believe me - every little bit counts. Take time each time you want to buy something to search for the Australian version - whether its a tube of toothpaste, new linen for the bedroom, a greeting card, or a cup of coffee. Lets all let our wallets do the talking. Together we can make a massive difference. Australian made, owned and operated - its our best chance. See more

11.01.2022 Need a little cooking inspiration for the weekend? This Mujadara with groats is delicious - so simple but the perfect dish to devour on its own for lunch or dinner or to have as a side with whatever you choose. Mujadara is a lentil and grain spiced dish and this one made with groats was developed by Cara from @carascrazycreations We reckon she's really hit the spot!!

11.01.2022 I do love a one-dish wonder and in summer I love a wholesome salad that holds its own. A really good salad is not a side dish and it doesn't need anything to accompany it. For me it does need a variety of colour, texture and good flavours though. It also needs enough 'guts' to keep me satisfied for a while, I don't want to be making a sandwich 2 hours later because I am peckish. Have you ever put groats in a salad? This raw broccoli and groat salad is always a winner. https://www.brushwoods.com.au/recipes/broccoli-groat-salad/

11.01.2022 Don't get caught short with no rolled oats in the pantry leading up to Anzac Day. We've got you covered!! Buyfromthebush #buyfromthebush #anzacbiscuits #lestweforget https://www.brushwoods.com.au/shop/

11.01.2022 Are you getting sick of pasta and rice yet? When you look for the good in the bad you realise that the bad is actually not so bad at all!! I found that with all the panic buying that was going on around me I was left looking at empty supermarket shelves. What it did for me was to make me look at alternatives and we've had some delicious foods that wouldn't normally have gone in my shopping trolley. I've also noticed that our groat sales have increa...sed about 8 fold in the past few weeks. If you haven't already discovered groats, now is the time. Groats are a bit like pearled barley. You can put them in soups and casseroles. You can cook them and cool them and put them through salads. And, you can use them as a replacement for rice. Yep, serve curry on a bed of groats, do fried groats (instead of fried rice), they make an amazing risotto and the list goes on. Pop a packet in your shopping cart next time you are in our online store and give them a go. They are delicious with a slightly chewy texture! . . Buyfromthebush See more

07.01.2022 This my friends is the perfect way to cook porridge. It is exactly how I cook it except that I don’t stir milk in at the end, I just put milk on top. I also don’t add honey as I find that fresh oats have a beautiful natural sweetness without it. Although I am often guilty of having something sweet as a topping. I change things up all the time and I do love to stir through stewed apples, sultanas and cinnamon at the end of cooking. Another favourite is to add a shot of coffe...e and some chopped dates at the start of cooking. The dates almost caramelise through the porridge. You can thank me later for those little ideas. Kx

07.01.2022 This is what a trip to town to post your oats looks like for me. I've always loved a tree lined driveway and now I have one of my very own. Everyday I head out this very driveway to take the days orders to our local post office. I spend most of the day at home on my own so I have to say that a trip to town is never a chore. Travel safe little oats.... Camera cred: Down brushwood road

04.01.2022 Cinnamon and lemon pancakes. #getinmybelly Definitely worth a try this weekend. These are super easy blender pancakes that will leave you very satisfied. They are more rustic than a traditional pancake but I do like a bit of texture. Cook a double batch and have the leftovers as cold pikelets with a little butter to enjoy with your mid-morning coffee. Thank you so much Cara @carascrazycreations for developing this recipe using our fresh oats. . .... #recipeshare #pancakes #healthylifestyle #homecooking #collaborationovercompetition #blenderbreakfast #easyrecipe #quickandhealthy #feedthetroops #buyaussiemade #buyfromthebush See more

03.01.2022 Definitely worth putting the oven mitts on for this weekend. These chewy little cookies featured on Mrs Oldbucks Pantry a couple of weeks back and we think they are a winner!! I've made them with the chocolate chips but I've also swapped the choc out for sultanas or cranberries (all options were delicious). ENJOY!!

03.01.2022 Time is slipping by and Mothers Day is creeping up on us. So, now is the perfect time to place an order for you porridge loving Mum who has everything. For the Mum who doesn't need more clutter, the Mum who values Australian product, the Mum who loves really good food. Here's the thing - if you thought that oats are oats you've go it all wrong. Our oats are fresh - that means they are going to take your Mum/Nanna/Gran/Nonna back to their childhood memories of what oats us...ed to taste like. Give her the gift that will take her morning porridge to the next level. She will love you for it - I just know it. Well, she probably already loves you but you know what I'm saying. We can dispatch your order directly to your Mum or Gran, just pop a wee note in the delivery instructions telling me what you want written on a personalised note, telling me that you would like them giftwrapped, or asking me to pop a note on the package telling her "Not to be opened until Mothers Day - No Peeking". Nothing is a bother from my end - I would be delighted to be sending our gorgeous oats off to your Mum to show her how much you love her.
