25.01.2022 2019 Airlie Bank Cabernet Franc - $25 from @hippobottlebar in Smith St, #collingwood Low intervention stuff from @puntrdwines off-shoot Airlie Bank, where winemaker Tim Shand @shandyonthepunt gives it some whole bunch open ferment treatment, a few judicious foot stomps and then into d hogsheads before an early bottling. Colour: Deep ruby hues.... Nose: Blackcurrants, mulberries, earth, nutmeg & brambles. Palate: Crunchy mulberries, cherries & subtle earthy strawberries, it’s super tangy but somehow gives the impression (I’ve no idea how) of richness. Verdict: This is a super refreshing #cabfranc lightly chill if you want (I didn’t), equally at home using its racy acidity with #lambshoulder or #steak , or #pizza at #home like me, or something vibrant like #chilli #crab or #thai #red #duck #curry . #bspoketoursmelbourne #puntroadwines #visitvictoria #wine #winetasting #review #winereview #reviewer #cabfranc #airliebank #hippobottlenbar #collingwood #melbourne #innernorth #yarravalley #yarravalleywine www.bspoketours.com.au

24.01.2022 2019 @piocesare1881 Il Nebbio Another ripper wine from the @piocesare1881 stable. The Langhe region produces amazing Nebbiolo, and not just from #barolo & #barbaresco . Colour: Translucent crimson hue with ruby edges.... Nose: As it opens up the classic tar & roses combo emerges, with macadamia biscuits, macerated cherries, cedar & subtle rosemary hints. Palate: Bright but intense sweet & sour red cherries lead the way, juicy acidity & textural macadamia & earthy feels also immediately evident. The tannins add more layers, astringent & dusty in turns. Verdict: For a young wine this has a serious future. Fragrant, bright & layered now, a more seamless & integrated version awaits the patient. I’m not patient Give it a big decant and smell & taste it evolve. At $40 from @danmurphys @danmurphyscollingwood Collingwood, it’s worthy of a Saturday night #ossobucco - bone marrow included . The acidity will provide the perfect cut through. #wine #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #italy #italianwine #vino #piedmonte #langhe #nebbiolo #piocesare #wineries #winemaker #community #melbourne #innernorth #collingwood #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

22.01.2022 2019 @dasjuice SSSB On Day 6 waiting for my #covid test result, my darling @bspokewife volunteered to grab me some vino to match her incredible Köttbullar med Janssons Temptation (meatballs with creamy gravy & anchovy spiked potato bake). She came back from @hippobottlebar with this ripper from importer @lofiwines winemaking project, @dasjuice . Thx @bspokewife , great choice. @dasjuice worked closely with viticulturist Dave Gartleman to source grapes and the wine was made ...alongside those at @delinquentewineco in the Riverland, SA. Nose: pineapples, peaches, brambles & toasted almond crumb. Palate: Ripe peaches (unexpected), singing pineapple acid lines, nectarines, stinging nettles & mushroom feels add texture & depth. As the bottle warms a briny element joins the party, and it’s a joy. Verdict: It’s a journey in the mouth, delicious on its own or with a shared grazing experience, but also v well suited to rich, creamy dishes. #wine #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #wineries #winemaker #community #southaustralia #riverland #lofi #dasjuice #delinquente #melbourne #innernorth #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

22.01.2022 Caught up with Chris & Gab Moore from @sailorsgravebrewing for a great chat (a taste of their new #hazyipa ) in Orbost as part of @bspokewife & my #eastgippsland adventure/break. Chris & Gab are hardened hospos, having run bars & restaurants in Sydney for 10 years before coming back to Victoria to follow a #seachange dream. @sailorsgravebrewing has been running for 4 years now, during which they’ve established a reputation for quality, balanced brews; quirky, local ingredien...ts & demonstrably recognisable & undeniably cool can #art .Their regular #collabs with @blackheartswine & @lightfoot_and_sons are seasonal favourites. Do yourself a favour and seek some of their rippers out. Reading the cans & admiring the can art is part of the fun. Shout out to the @marlo_hotel for a great couple of days. #beer #craftbeer #orbost #eastgippsland #supportlocal #sailorsgravebrewing #marlo #marlopub #bspoketoursmelbourne #smallgroupsbigmemories #review #beerreview #brewery #brewers www.bspoketours.com.au @ Sailors Grave Brewing

21.01.2022 2018 @deepwoodsestate Shiraz et al The et al here refers to a dollop of Malbec that delivers a floral lift & racy blackberry acidity to the classy maritime Shiraz component. Colour: deep garnet hues... Nose: Plums & mulberries vie for ascendency up front, with subtle anise, violets, cedar, earthy mushies & thyme notes adding complexity. Palate: Delivers dark, brooding forest fruits, plummy (mid-weight) richness that builds as the wine opens, white pepper, black olive/saline hints & earthy, textural feels. A long, satisfying finish. Verdict: $20 from @danmurphys Collingwood, this is classy, underrated juice, drinks like $40!! Chug, decant or cellar for up to 10 years. PS. I put this wine in my Ben’s Top 5 wines in the Collingwood @danmurphys store before all the trophies & gold medals started rolling in #wine #winereview #winetasting #benstop5 #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #margaretriver #westernaustralia #shiraz #malbec #deepwoodsestate #trophies #goldmedals #wineries #winemaker #community #melbourne #innernorth #collingwood #danmurphys #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne @ Collingwood, Victoria, Australia

20.01.2022 16, ‘17, ‘18 @bromleywines Revolution An incredibly cool blend made from separate barrels of ‘16 Pinot Gris, ‘17 Semillon & ‘18 Chenin Blanc (an ol’ favourite of winemaker extraordinaire Darren Burke - @leuraparkestate & @yessaidtheseal) from the Geelong & Bendigo regions. Colour: Rapunzel golden hue.... Nose: Spiced pears, green apples, lifted lemon & lemon blossom notes, subtle honey & rosemary hints too. Palate: Cinnamon poached pears, green apples & lemon acid squirts, wet stone minerality, almond meal & honeyed textural feels. Verdict: This is as complex as you’d expect from a wine combining three varieties from three vintages, but they meld together beautifully. Darren Burke confirmed much of the complexity formed around lees contact sans sulphur of the ‘16 Pinot Gris all the way to bottling in ‘19. There’s definitely notes from the Semillon & Chenin too. It’s aromatic, textural & full flavoured. I loved it!!! #wine #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #wineries #geelong #bendigo #winemaker #community #melbourne #innernorth #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

19.01.2022 @bspokewife & I had an interesting & fun visit to @dirtythreewines with @satchwine & @sartorisometimes. Their vineyards are spread throughout South Gippsland, though the cellar door is cleverly located on holiday hotspot Inverloch. Marcus (@satchwine ) is the winemaker, and is passionate about #terroir - that is the earth explains the intricacies of a wine, not just the grape variety or clone. Having said that, while there’s a gorgeously fruity/savoury Dirty Chard & you night... still find a Dirty Rizza somewhere, Pinot Noir is the star of the show. The all-site blend #allthedirts Pinot Noir hits the spot with fruit clarity, earth, spice & acidity, but it’s the three individual vineyard Pinots - Dirt 1, 2 & 3 that really talk to the terroir philosophy that @satchwine truly believes in. Dirt 1 was full of ripe cherries & black fruit as well, well balanced -yummy. Dirt 2 was immediately the food wine of the three, racy sour cherry acidity - bring on crispy skinned duck. Dirt 3 was extra textural, super layered & aromatic, a wine to ponder. @satchwine also makes some really interesting sidelines under the Sourced by Satch label. We tried the Aldo Shiraz - super funky, cool climate Shiraz, went v well with our pizza. Find these wines or, even better, get in the car and give Marcus & Lisa a visit. They’re passionate about what they do, you won’t regret it. #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #gippsland #southgippsland #wineaustralia #dirtythreewines #wineries #winemaker #community #melbourne #innernorth #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

19.01.2022 2018 Aldo Shiraz (made by @satchwine from @dirtythreewines ) Colour: deep crimson hue Nose: smoky, whole-bunchy/stalky/rosemary, macerated black cherries & brambly blackberries, anise too.... Palate: zinging blackberry acid lines run the length of this wine, subtle plum richness revealing itself later, rosemary, brambles, earthy/fungi feels & vibrant cedary tannins. Verdict: Breathe!! This wine opens up considerably but remains firmly in the racy & savoury camps. I love the complexity (always been a fan of the #funk ) but teaming with a rich dish really adds balance (gnocchi bolognese for us, pumpkin curry would also work). #wine #winemakers #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #wineries #winemaker #community #gippsland #gippslandwine #inverloch #melbourne #innernorth #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

18.01.2022 Our visit to Neil Hawkins at @thewinefarm was everything I’d hoped (& expected) it to be. It’s located just out of Koonwarra (a v cute little town with incredible fresh produce), and just up the road from @bassphillipwine . Neil is all about the land, the soil & what’s underneath it. Neil also believes if the wine he makes won’t live 20 years, why make it?. His wines are refreshingly lower in alcohol, no 14.5%s here, yet they lose nothing in power & finesse. It’s all gravit...y fed here too, and hand-bottled. There are expansion moves afoot (Neil believes firmly in having skin in the game, no leasing arrangements), so expect to hear, see & taste a lot more from the Hawkins family in the future. I’m also looking forward to tasting (& reviewing) a cheeky 2013 Sun & Air he made from the Bass Phillip Belrose patch back in the day. Thx Neil #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #gippsland #southgippsland #koonwarra #thewinefarm #wineaustralia #wineries #winemaker #community #melbourne #innernorth #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

17.01.2022 2013 Sun and Air Pinot Noir Made by Neil Hawkins from Hawkins Family Wines (a partnership with his wife, Anna, and their 3 little kidlets, who then formed @thewinefarm ) from a the Belrose parcel of @bassphillipwines (Neil was helping out at the time). Colour: Velvety dark crimson hue.... Nose: Ripe cherries, subtle mulberries, nougat, nutmeg, pepper & field mushrooms. I think there’s more to come here, it’s just a baby. Palate: Tangy redcurrants, sweet & sour cherries, subtle ripe plum hints provide depth, chewy nougat feels, savoury fine cedary tannins & juicy acidity that lingers. Verdict: Its parts are great, but the sum of those parts are super, a savoury, textural delight that I reckon is on a much longer journey. I’d love to try this wine in 2023, 2028 & again in 2033. #wine #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #wineries #winemaker #community #gippsland #southgippsland #thewinefarm #bassphillip #belrosevineyard #melbourne #innernorth #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

15.01.2022 2019 @littlerarapyrenvineyard Pétillant #1 From the Pyrenees, this Pét Nat with no added sulphites, comes at you with a hazy guava juice hue, light residual bubbles in the glass post-pour, and ample sediment on the bottom of the bottle. Nose: offers blood orange, lime hints, some dank hay, earthy/fungi feels & a floral note I can’t quite put my finger on.... Pslate: gives you a split-second glimpse of bright blood orange & hints of erdbeeren, before delivering textural nectarine & grapefruit hits, & finally moving on to dried herbs, nutmeg, mushies & some lingering ginger warmth. Verdict: This is a funk party (yes, you’re invited!!), just begging for a (kitchen) picnic, replete with stinky, runny cheese, dates, quince paste & a crusty baguette. It also went well with yesterday’s chicken & veg curry. This is a steal at $30 @danmurphys @danmurphyscollingwood Collingwood. #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #littlerara #pyrenvineyard #warrenmang #pyrenees #danmurphys #danmurphyscollingwood #collingwood #discoveryourpassionincollingwood #wineaustralia #wineries #winemaker #community #melbourne #innernorth #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

15.01.2022 2015 @freibrothersreserve Cabernet Sauvignon from @danmurphys @danmurphyscollingwood From the Sonoma Valley sub-region of Alexander Valley, an area renowned for Cabernet. Colours: Purple hue, garnet edges.... Nose: Blackcurrants & plums, spicy vanillin oak, brambly notes & licorice hints. Palate: Ripe forest fruit, mouth-watering blackberry acid lines, velvety mouthfeel & fine grained tannins adds texture & balance. Verdict: Classic, opulent Alexander Valley Cabernet, gorgeous on its own, but begging for some gourmet snags or lamb shoulder from @meatsmith_melb and/or roast vegies from @paddlewheelprahran #wine #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #wineries #winemaker #community #melbourne #innernorth #california #sonomacounty #alexandervalley #cabernetsauvignon #danmurphys #collingwood #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

10.01.2022 2018 @pyrenvineyard Sauvignon Colour: Rapunzel golden hue. Nose: Tropical aromas, pineapples, rockmelons, vanilla nougat notes too. ... Palate: Nectarines, rockmelons, earthy fungi notes, ginger hints & tangy pineapple acid lines. It’s a fruit & savoury party in your mouth. Verdict: Perfect with crumbed flake....rich white flesh, crisp nutty crumbs, just the the match for this tasty Savvy B full of tropical rich fruit, savoury, earthy feels & racy acidity. #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #wineries #pyrenees #pyrenvineyards #winemaker #community #melbourne #innernorth #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

10.01.2022 2018 @xanaduwines #cabsauv Winner of the ‘16 iteration of the #jimmywatsontrophy , the ‘18 @xanadu was under pressure to perform. Well, while the ‘18 version might not be as immediately complex (at least on the nose), as say the @frasergallop #cabsauv, four hours after decanting this wine is only just coming into its own. So enjoy now for pure fruit intensity and/or put some down to experience those classic aged characteristics that will emerge.... Colour: Deep black hue, look deep jnto your soul, with crimson edges.....and we all have those. Nose: Blunt up front, the decant or in-glass breathe is essential. Classic deep cassis fruit, rosemary hints, emerging violet hints, cedary tannins, mulchy feels & subtle cigar box hits. Palate: This wine will build; up front it’s all blackcurrant/mulberry, lots of brambly acidity, and puckering cedary tannins that complete the classic Cabernet profile. It’s delicious now, don’t get me wrong, the cigar box, tobacco & rosemary hints offer a vision into the future. Verdict: If you buy to drink now, it’s a delicious match with #lamb or any red meat, just give it a chance to breathe. But ALSO, buy a dozen from @ danmurphyscollingwood at $38/bottle and thank me in 5-10 years time. #wine #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #wineries #westernaustralia #wa #margaretriver#xanadu #winemaker #community #melbourne #innernorth #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

07.01.2022 An @fixationbrewing #footy #feast - thx @fixationbrewing for being a good luck totem for me ol’ @carlton_fc Blues. The plan to have one per quarter was thrown by the impressive ‘13 @turnerscrossingwine Shiraz, which was too delicious to interrupt. 06.01.2022 2008 Balthazar of the Barossa Marananga Shiraz Not often do you find the 2008 iteration of a wine in-store for the same price as the current vintage- the 2018. Colour:Deepest purple & black hues, bright garnet edges.... Nose: Ripe plums, dates, licorice, cinnamon, spicy cedar & a subtle field mushroom backdrop. Palate: Rich plums, blackberries & dates, abundant licorice & savoury, cedary textural feels. Blackberry acid lines keep it fresh. Verdict: Incredible depth & decadence delivered at a current vintage price of $38. Buy your #scotchfillet @meatsmith on Smith St , Collingwood, grab your 2008 @balthazar Shiraz & smile. #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #wineries #winemaker #community #melbourne #innernorth #southaustralia #barossavalley #balthazar #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

06.01.2022 2014 @sammirandawine Saperavi Picked up at The Pinno @pinsent.hotel in Wangaratta #wang . They always #supportlocal & often have some back vintage surprises. The nose is super ripe, takes time to develop, dark cherries, blackberries, ripe prunes & nutmeg.... Depth & length, the blackberries & prunes lead the narrative, the rosemary & earthy mushrooms provide the subtext, mulberry acid lines & subtle but long lingering tannins add the complexity. Delicious!! Do yourselves a favour.

04.01.2022 2018 @yessaidtheseal Pinot Noir The 2016 iteration won the 2017 #australianpinotnoirchallenge - I tasted it (quite often), it was a doozy. COLOUR: Transparent crimson hue.... NOSE: Quite closed initially but happily it opens up in a gradual fashion - decant this Pinot! Dark cherries, subtle forest floor, cedar, nutmeg & truffle hints. Later on there’s a lifted floral note - maybe violets (I know, normally that’s a cabernet note). PALATE: Really juicy sweet & sour cherries up front, and that racy acidity runs the length of the field; almondy & cedary textural feels provide the boundaries. VERDICT: @yessaidtheseal have kicked another Pinot goal here, the nose & palate open up like an initially tight Demons defence (which was still good enough the beat @carlton_fc ). #wine #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #geelongwine #bellarinepeninsula #leuraparkestate #yessaidtheseal #pinotnoir #wineries #winemaker #community #colllingwood #melbourne #innernorth #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

03.01.2022 16 @bromleywines Heathcote Nebbiolo Darren Burke selects parcels of grapes judiciously, from a variety of regions, for his mixture of classic & fun/funky releases. Colour: Translucent garnet hue. ... Nose: Dark cherries, classic tar & roses, field mushrooms & earthy strawberry hints. Palate: Sweet & sour cherries, anise, savoury cedar & nutty feels, singing raspberry acid lines that tie it all together. Verdict: This is a beautiful, flavoursome Heathcote Nebbiolo from a warm vintage, but with racy acidity that keeps it all so, so balanced. It was a delight from start to finish, continuing to open up as I sipped away over 2 hours. #winereview #winetasting #wineporn #visitvictoria #wineaustralia #wineries #vineyard #heathcote #winemaker #geelong #community #melbourne #innernorth #smallgroupsbigmemories #bspoketoursmelbourne www.bspoketours.com.au

02.01.2022 @kr.brewing Farmhouse Series Belgian Tripel Aged in French oak used previously for white wine, this tripel has definite grapey undertones & a lighter feel that belies it’s heroic 10% alc/vol. Nose: Grapey notes & floral lift, sour cherries, dark malt & toffee hints, wild yeasty wisps.... Palate: Mandarin & toffee up front, then funky yeast & briochey feels, then strange lightly fortified Chardonnay acid lines. Verdict: I love that for a Tripel this beer has so much light & shade. Already feeling a little buzz, but not bloated. It’s dangerously asking me the question: why not have another one, or two? There is surely a little devil on the shoulder when savouring this complex beauty. #beer #beerstagram #beersofinstagram #beersoftheworld #craftbeer #kingvalley #victoria #visitvictoria #australia #beeraustralia #beerreview #melbourne #collingwood #bspoketoursmelbourne #smallgroupsbigmemories #wine #wineries #winemakers www.bspoketours.com.au

02.01.2022 This guy, my Dad, Bob(by) Phillips, has had to stand by me, through a lot, thick & thin, when I did not always deserve it, but he was always there, and when I wed Marcy, there he was, again, as I bit my lip amazed that I would get this opportunity again. He’s also delivered in spades for my siblings & for a plethora of foster children. He is a v special person (you are too Mum ). Happy Father’s Day, Bobby, love you.
