23.01.2022 Oops! Who here caught on to the mistake? Or was it?? Nothing like adding a Jedi mind trick during a pandemic. Someone in ACT mustve laughed like Palpatine when they came up with the new stimulus name. JobSeeker and JobKeeper both means of financial assistance but done in difference ways. Details on JobKeeper still to come as we await parliament to release the legislation and approve it.

23.01.2022 Ouch! The Labour government have many plans to shake up the tax system as we currently know it. If you have own any investments then its worth knowing how youll be impacted by the proposed changes to Capital Gains Tax and negative gearing. Ill put together a list if all changes each government party is putting forward at the election in May 2019. For any immediate concerns, please get in contact me!

22.01.2022 Guess who stayed up to study last nights budget release? The WINNERS? - Medium sized individual tax payers with significant tax cuts and changes to the tax rates; - Small businesses wanting to purchase equipment with an increase to the instant asset write-off to $30K;... - Geelong residents with $2bn proposed for a fast rail link to Melbourne (yay for the west!); - Commuters on public transport with funding for more car parks; - Health funding to the public of up to $89bn, including an allocated amount for mental health assistance; - Parents will receive more funding to encourage pre-school attendance; - Primary and Secondary school students to receive assistance with maths, literacy and digital skills, plus funding to better train teachers in these areas as well. The GRINNERS: those who dont want to do the right thing. An increase in funding to improve data-matching and sharing between employers and government departments (if you receive any payments from Centrelink this will affect you). Also, if you have an ABN and dont lodge a tax return, expect this to change. A requirement to lodge, regardless of income level, will be mandatory for anyone wanting to keep their ABN active. The Labour government (the opposition) have proposed many more changes which will have a larger negative impact for tax payers. What are your thoughts? Does the sound of a federal budget scare or bore you? See more

21.01.2022 FACT #1: I enjoy learning! Boring isnt it?! But the truth is, theres so many skills that we havent been taught, either it be personally or professionally. So Im a BIG advocate of personal and professional development! FACT #2: some courses may be tax deductible, AND may increase your earning potential ... Today I had the pleasure of attending a Time Management course at the Centre for Adult Education (CAE) with the amazing Sharon Pakir. Nope, not a sponsored post by any means! Just an example of a course you may be able to utilise as part of your business or employment, with added benefits and fulfillment.

21.01.2022 NO ABN NO WITHHOLDING NO DEDUCTION Soon to be approved, this will take place from 1 July 2019 and impacts all payments made to contractors and employees (even those casual workers you may use as a one-off). ... We know that in business there can be an overload of documentation, however its becoming more and more essential to get it right. So if the concepts of TFN, ABN and PAYG Withholding sound foreign or make you feel overwhelmed, give us a call and well turn it into simple and understanding terms.

19.01.2022 171 unread emails. Thats not a typo, I wish it was... but its not. Thats 171 unread emails that greet me as I turn on my laptop today. Its been a growing number from September 2019 to February 2020 whilst on maternity leave. . So, whilst I sift through the spam, subscription newsletters, training resources and emails that I marked as unread until Im confident that I complete the task (this is my second form of tracking workflow), I still have to focus on the work I hav...e in progress and time sensitive jobs. . My days may be a little blurry for now, but it wont take long for things to settle down. One thing is for sure - Im absolutely loving the support my clients have shown me, and continue to extend to me, and this little local business, whilst I transition back to work. . A MASSIVE THANK YOU TO ALL See more

19.01.2022 MATERNITY LEAVE This little bundle of joy has been keeping me occupied and the reason why Im officially turning on my out of office reply (a little late but eh! ). Days are passing by faster than ever, and you can never gain back time that has passed. Its for this reason Im slowing down and taking time out until Feb/March 2020 so that I can take in all the cuddles, tears and smiles I can get.... Ill still be semi-contactable, but I cant guarantee that Ill respond to a text, call, emails or DMs. Its not that I dont want to, its just that Ill either be staring into some gorgeous gazing eyes, cleaning up vomit or zoning out from witching hr . If you want to chat or need something done, please be patient and try all means to get hold of me if urgent. Im looking forward to coming back in 2020 and meeting up with my amazing clients for the kick-off to tax planning season Xx

15.01.2022 A change of pace and different scenery before we get back into our usual rhythm next week. Either it be a beach, river or lake - being near water is my happy place

14.01.2022 Yesterday I had the great pleasure of attending the most AMAZING workshop with the INCREDIBLE Cherie from @thedigitalpicnic Its my first workshop since having bubs, and whilst Ive attended countless number of business meetings with my eldest daughter by my side, for some reason this time I was absolutely terrified to be the one rocking up with a 3 month old in tow. I was apologetic. I sat to the side and whenever she made any noise I dashed out of that door as I didnt wan...t to disturb anyone. But the best thing happened! After the session I had so many incredible women approach me to say that they wished I hadnt ran out, and that they were in awe of me even making an appearance. I cant explain why I was scared. I never hesitated taking my eldest with me to meetings (she was 2 at the time ). I figured that my clients knew I had a young family and that was the real me. I learnt *heaps* yesterday from Cherie, but my greatest lesson was learning that my values havent changed. I do have a young family and right now this is what I work around. I want to be surrounded by those that are happy to accept and support this. Thank you to Chrissi from @innerwestbizhub for allowing us to attend, and for attracting a gorgeous group of ladies as part of your community

14.01.2022 Over the past 20 days theres been A LOT of announcements across Australia about how the governments and our banks intend to support our nation as we watch the economy cripple. Most of whats been announced has not yet come to law, and still needs to be approved and legislation drawn up (cant get passed that red tape!). Ive been here, in the background, piecing together all of the support options that will benefit my clients, friends, family and my community. Ill be sending out a newsletter tomorrow with all the finer details and Ill also share the link on social media; so watch this space! If you have any immediate questions, shoot us through a message and Ill get to you as quick as I can.

14.01.2022 JobKeeper Payments approved! If you have any immediate questions please post them here. Ill be reading through 100+ pages of details to make sure I know all the fine details. Have a great day everyone

13.01.2022 EFTPOS surcharges that bite Theres no denying that were becoming a cashless society After all, studies have revealed that as we spend our cash, we psychologically associate the feeling with pain and loss. So whilst we tap away at the machines to pay for our coffees, food and clothes, have you ever stopped to see if youre being charged a surcharge for such pleasure? ... Whether youre a consumer or business owner, I urge you to know what the rules are on payment surcharges as it is illegal to charge excessive surcharges for various card payments. In the past month Ive experienced 3 sets of EFTPOS surcharges just for using my everyday transaction account as a payment method. What got my attention was that one merchant wanted to charge 4% (yep! FOUR PERCENT) for just using their EFTPOS machine on a transaction under $30. Another was 2.5% for paying with EFTPOS regardless. NONE of these were for use of a VISA or Mastercard. What is an excessive charge you may ask? The ACCC allow merchants to pass on their costs for accepting such methods of payment, and the typical cost charged is usually within 1-1.5%. AMEX and Diners Club payments are not subject to the clause. image by yours truly, Shelly Stephens

12.01.2022 Have you recently sent an email and not had a reply? Ive just found a heap of emails that were received late June and to mid July. Ill be working through them today so please look out for my response! #helloitsme #nottechsavvy

11.01.2022 Hello Ive been too busy behind the scenes, working IN my business and ON my business, that I forgot to do an intro Well here I am Shelly Stephens. 10.01.2022 Im ever so grateful to come across some truly beautiful people as I take on this small business journey. On Saturday I was surprised to find these gorgeous flowers at my door step. My husband tried to take credit but the card said it all. This wasnt from a client, friend or family.... Instead they were from a lovely local who wanted to thank me for being there to help her through her worries as she took a step into her husbands business. My heart is full it couldnt have come at a better time as I work through my busiest season yet, and feeling as though Ive let people down cause I couldnt serve them in time. This is reality, but Im at peace knowing that I have the support of a great community.

09.01.2022 That New Year feeling of starting fresh and reenergized. 2018 was known as the year of the shadow, so if it felt like a tough year, be reassured that you werent alone. How are you reining in the beginning of 2019? Have goals been set? Perhaps a change in mindset been made?

08.01.2022 Our wonderful bay delivering stunning views I hope everyone is managing to keep cool during these hot days

08.01.2022 Almost every small business is experiencing a significant drop in income as we stare down the barrel of this economic crisis. My desire to help has consumed me, I have a list of clients to contact and ideas on how I can save them money in any way possible, big or small, as I believe every dollar counts. To make a start, Ive contacted clients who would be able to downgrade their Xero subscription. Most Xero users are on a standard $50 p.m subscription, but with little to no sales, fewer bank transactions, why not downgrade and save yourself $25 p.m and move to the starter sub. It takes 30 days for the change to happen, so start now! If you want help in reviewing your subscriptions or steps to change them, please message me, you dont even have to be a client, I just want to know that Ive made a difference.

08.01.2022 Devastated. Heartbroken. Proud. Its a roller coaster of emotions as I watch our country burn. The images and stories are a lot to take in and whilst I feel like theres more we can do, I cant help but feel proud of our community as we seek ways to help those impacted by the fires that are raging throughout our states. Its going to be a long road to recovery for all involved, so if youre not capable of helping today, put a reminder in your calendar to check-in with these ...injured communities in a months time, 6 months or 1 year even. We need to ensure the hardship of Black Saturday is not repeated and no one goes without. Be proud of any contribution you make. Big or small. Now or in the future. Money, time or resources. Not all landlords are nasty, some are generously helping where they can, and these new laws are here to help them as well. Take a read and I hope these laws put you in a better position to get through these tough times.

06.01.2022 The fabulous Fi from Peach Business Management explains the tests involved in determining eligibility to the JobKeeper payments for businesses that have experienced significant growth over the past 12 months. Well done Fi I know this information will be welcomed by many small business owners.

05.01.2022 Are you using a MYOB desktop product for your business? If so, this news is for you! With the success and future of cloud based accounting packages, MYOB will cease all support and upgrades to their renowned desktop products in attempt to phase it out. Get in touch with us to see how this change affects you!

05.01.2022 Heres to the start of a new week and a new frame of mind! Last week hubby had more than just a bad day. He had the kind of day that knocks you down mentally and physically and just makes you wonder why you continue in business. Were both self-employed, so we celebrate our highs and wins together with full understanding. But when we reach our lowest points, we unite and pick the other one up. We are each others cheerleader, coach and team. We know that were on this busine...ss-ownership journey together. So, the next day, we packed our bags and headed away. We havent spoken about work. We have completely shut-off and taken the time to breathe, collect our thoughts and really take in what has happened in our lives over the past 4 months, cause boy it has been dramatic! Im a true believer that things happen for a reason. We needed this push, as shitty as it was and has been, I can now see the positive side of it and am ready to tackle the next chapter. If youve had a tough time, please dont go through it alone. Either you be self-employed or not. Reach out, talk, or take a time out xox

03.01.2022 Thats right, its TAX TIME!! The ATO was inundated yesterday to the point that their online portals crashed For those getting in early, please remember to have all of your income details available as the ATO can take up to 1-2 months before they show any information. This avoids receiving nasty letters when they data match later in the year, and you may have forgotten to include bank interest, income from a one-off job you done, or dividends from shares. ... #numbercrunchers #earlybirds #taxtime

02.01.2022 May declarations for JobKeeper are now due and must be lodged by 14 June 2020. Payments will only be made if the monthly declarations are lodged on time. To keep it simple: 1. Businesses MUST declare if they were eligible to be paid for the prior month. Yep, prior month. This system likes to screw with dates so if you get confused. . ... 2. If you dont lodge the declaration on time you will not be paid and you are out of the system. A costly mistake! Be sure to lodge between the 1st - 14th of each month. Put a reminder in your calendar so you dont lose out. . 3. The business does not need to show a 30% drop in income each month in order to claim the payment. This was only the criteria needed to enrol. Once enrolled you are free to earn as much as you can & it wont impact your ongoing payments . 4. As part of the declaration you need to report what income the business has earned in the prior month, and what it expects to earn in the current month. Dont let the term GST turnover fool you. For most businesses this will be the $ amount of invoices issued. Do NOT include your JobKeeper money as part of these calcs. If youre confused on the steps or your circumstances have changed, it will be in your best interest to speak up and ask the question. Feel free to pop your questions below or send me a DM and we can chat.

01.01.2022 Its official! From 1 July 2019 ALL employers will be required to report *every* pay run If youre in business theres going to be plenty of questions to ask, and Xero has put together a great FAQ page which I recommend you to look over (https://www.xero.com//your-questions-on-single-touch-payr/). Yes this means additional compliance, however with *amazing* payroll assistance (ahem... Us! ) well help you get the right systems in place so that the change is seamless!... For employees - this means greater transparency, with information being readily available via MyGov. Many employees still dont receive payslips let alone payment summaries #aweful, so this will be a great change in the digital age.

01.01.2022 Much needed financial support was announced today with news of a JobKeeper Payment. It hasnt yet become law (at 30/03/2020), but with the messages that flowed through after this was announced - I know that it is the *HOPE* that many small businesses have been waiting for. This is for the self-employed who missed out on the first and second round of support, for the employers who have had to make the gut-wrenching decision to stand down their employees, or even cut their pay, because income disappeared within the space of a day. It isnt perfect, but its something. $1,500 per fortnight, per eligable individual, if the business has experienced a 30% drop in turnover. Theres still more details to come, and Ill share them the moment they do.
