25.01.2022 Bridging the Gap Foundation board member, Joshua Gilbert, attended the launch of a new St John Ambulance AED at Government House in Yarralumla last week. The foundation was fortunate enough to be one of 10 Australian not-for-profit organisations to be gifted a defibrillator, which will be used by Menzies HealthLAB to train staff and provide emergency support in remote communities. 24.01.2022 Cass and the team from endota spa in Melbourne reached out to Bridging the Gap to offer a donation of makeup products that have designed to suit all ranges of skin shades. The Menzies HealthLAB team were very pleased to receive these products as they are currently preparing some kits for girls in remote schools and can include these products in there as a surprise gift. 22.01.2022 Josh Gilbert’s association with Bridging the Gap Foundation began in 2018 as an Ambassador and has now evolved into joining the board. A Worimi man from Gloucester on the NSW Mid North Coast, Josh is a tireless advocate, creating change in the Indigenous, agricultural and environmental fields. For his advocacy, he has previously been recognised as the Australian Geographic Young Conservationist of the Year, the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage’s Young Sustainability Ch...ampion and the Foundation for Young Australians’ Local Legend Award. Professionally, Josh has channelled his skills and experience into a management role with PwC’s Indigenous Consulting, and he believes that the area of Indigenous employment is where Bridging the Gap can make an impact. He is also working on the Gari Yala project with Jumbunna and the Diversity Council of Australia, whereby over 1000 mob from across the country have shared, firsthand, their employment experiences. 21.01.2022 Meet Zoe Fitzpatrick, a trainee with Menzies HealthLab's Headstart program. Zoe is from Borroloola and is currently based in Adelaide studying nursing. As well as working with Menzies HealthLab to deliver health education programs to remote communities, Zoe is also passionate about raising awareness of Aboriginal health traditions and the westernised way of healthcare, and how they both are important. She is currently developing an educational video in multiple languages for... 21.01.2022 Wishing best of luck to Anna Womatakimmi, who is about to embark on the second stage of her traineeship with Menzies School of Health Research. Anna grew up in Darwin and is now studying Arts and Science at the University of Tasmania. Her introduction to Menzies came through an Indigenous support group STARS and as a result she did her first stint with the D-Kids team finishing up in late January. D-Kids is a research project looking at the effects of Vitamin D supplementati...on on acute respiratory infections in Indigenous babies from birth to 12 months. Anna is now back with the team for a few months for a second stint and is really looking forward to being involved at grass roots level. 20.01.2022 Introducing Jahdai Vigona, who has just been offered a full-time traineeship with Menzies’ Drug & Alcohol team and HealthLAB. Thanks to generous support of our donors, Bridging the Gap Foundation has been able to create these new Menzies traineeship positions. 19-year-old Jahdai has developed a passion for dedicating his research back to his community and wishes to further his studies in public health through Charles Darwin University and Menzies School of Health Research. ...Jahdai is of Tiwi Island heritage but grew up in Darwin where he is completing a Certificate III in Community Services with the Drug & Alcohol team. Naja is a proud Garrawa (Borroloola, NT) and Djugun-Yawuru (Broome, WA) woman and a Biyamarr ma trainee at Menzies School of Health Research. Naja has been completing her Certificate III in Business alongside RHD Australia, which conducts research on rheumatic heart disease and its impact on Indigenous communities. Her experience has shaped her decision to pursue further study in media and journalism.... Being a part of this traineeship has had a very positive impact on my life, Naja said. I now have a clear idea of what I want to study at university and I feel as though I have a lot more confidence and faith in myself.

He leads programs in Timor-Leste and the Northern Territory which are focused on teaching, capacity building, health systems improvement and research. 06.01.2022 In 2020, 86% of SEDA Group’s Indigenous Year 12 students completed school, which is 20% above the average school completion rate of Indigenous 20-24 year olds that was recorded in the Closing the Gap report. We have partnered with applied learning education provider SEDA Group to create a new scholarship program for young Indigenous Australians. The scholarships will offer students in Years 10 to 12 in the Northern Territory and Years 11 and 12 in New South Wales, South Aust...ralia and Victoria access to a fully funded position in a SEDA program, removing any financial barrier for interested families. Through the SEDA programs, recipients will have access to a pathways-focused senior secondary education which will be tailored to their own goals and aspirations. 05.01.2022 9 out of 10 children in remote communities have some form of ear disease and many suffer hearing loss as a result. Menzies School of Health Research has recognised seven trainees from the Tiwi Islands as the first graduates of the Hearing for Learning Initiative, that provides community members with valuable ear infection prevention training. These graduates can now provide care to children as ear health facilitators, which will lessen the need for fly-in fly-out specialists,... reduce treatment waiting times and create job opportunities.
