23.01.2022 "Johnnie does have more toys than you, I tell him. But, did you know those are the only toys he gets to play with? He doesnt get to go to the toy library and... choose new toys like you do. He doesnt get to go to the toy library?, my son replies in concerned disbelief. No, I explain, Youre lucky you get to go to the toy library. What would you rather have: all of Johnnies toys or go to the toy library? Toy library, definitely is the firm reply. https://www.moretimethanmoney.co.nz/why-to-join-a-toy-libr/

19.01.2022 How to stop toy pieces disappearing! It happens to all of us. One Lego block is missing, or that single puzzle piece isnt with the rest of the jigsaw. You know it will always be in the last place you look Here are some tips to reduce the risk of toy pieces getting lost.... Tip 1 If youve borrowed a fabulous toy with lots of itty-bitty pieces, think about whether your child really needs to play with all of them. For example, the farm set has four chickens, three cows and two pigs but the chickens are smaller and more likely to get lost. Maybe put two chickens and one of the cows back in the bag for safekeeping theres still a lot of action happening on the farm! Tip 2 If you borrow a toy set which already has some similar pieces to ones you own (eg Lego), perhaps substitute your own and keep the toy library pieces in the bag no risk of losing them then! Tip 3 If a borrowed toy comes with smaller pieces which are more likely to be lost, why not keep them safe in a box so you can bring them out when youre playing with your child and then put them back. Less clutter = less chance of pieces disappearing. Tip 4 Start collecting all the toy pieces a day or two before you plan to return them, giving yourself lots of time to check under the couch and in all the other hidey places before you come back. We have a $2 per piece fine for missing pieces, which is refunded to you when you find it! Its never too late to return a piece and wed love to complete our sets again - so if you find them, bring them back! :)

19.01.2022 No bookings required! We no longer require bookings for you to come to the Toy Library, we just ask you abide by the number limits in the rooms to keep everyone safe! Did you know we have musical instruments? This adorable tiny piano is perfect for a toddler and is very popular!... Members, many of you have toys due for return soon, so please put us in your diary to return (and borrow!) - we dont want visiting members to miss out on the great toys you have on loan :) Open tomorrow 9.30-10.30 and Saturday 9.30-11.30. See you soon!

But for just $50 you can join for a year and access hundreds of high quality toys that would otherwise be cost and space prohibitive for most families. In 2021 we would love to grow our Facebook following and membership base so more families know about us, and can access great play opportunities for their children. ... So please like and share our posts and page and help us spread the fun

08.01.2022 There's been a lot of talk about puzzles this year (especially when the Prime Minister himself recommends them for lockdown!). But why are puzzles so good for k...ids, and even adults? Good quality puzzles are "self correcting" - your child will see if they're getting it wrong and work to figure out how to get the correct answer. When they complete the puzzle, it is also self-rewarding - they can easily see what they have achieve. These two qualities help develop confidence, and resilience - two very essential things for any human being! Puzzles are useful for developing and extending fine motor skills. Knob and chunky puzzles are great for babies and toddlers to practice grasping, with often the pieces themselves being interesting enough to capture the child's interest before they are even aware of the puzzle concept itself. As pieces get smaller, this further develops dexterity and hand eye coordination. Themed puzzles are great for imparting knowledge and developing language. Borrowing an alphabet puzzle allows children to become familiar with letter shapes. A puzzle with farm animals gives an opportunity to name animals and talk about their characteristics. Many toy libraries have fantastic puzzles aimed at older children with themes such anatomy, space and solar systems, geography, and much more. Puzzles are also a handy way to build social skills. Children completing a puzzle together will need to communicate and negotiate about pieces and where they might go. Working towards a common goal can be useful for children who are shy - the focus is on the puzzle, rather than having a new person put all their attention on them. Doing puzzles over and over again is a normal part of children developing mastery and confidence, but eventually they will become bored. Borrowing from the toy library is a great way to keep the novelty factor of puzzles without ending up with a cupboard full or missing pieces all over the house. If you have spare complete puzzles from lockdown, you can contact your local toy library about donating - they will be able to let you know if what you have is appropriate.

01.01.2022 MAGNETIC TILES! We are SO EXCITED, to be adding Connetix Magnetic Tiles to our library. Magnetic tiles, especially awesome ones like these, are the ultimate open ended toy for a wide range of ages. ... "Connetix tiles encourage cognitive development, spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, fine and gross motor skills and help children build knowledge around scientific and mathematical concepts, all through play!" These tiles have rivets for extra safety, but they're not suitable for young children, 3+ is the recommendation. We would LOVE to see pictures of what your children create :) They will be in the Toy Library by Saturday...who will the lucky children be? (Also surprisingly fun for parents... ;) )
