17.01.2022 1230 THURS 26 DEC East Gippsland area bushfires update The weather for the weekend, particularly Saturday through to Monday is looking very hot (high 30s - ...40+ degrees), dry and windy. We’re preparing for that and you need to also. These predictions are for the worst weather we’ve had since these fires started. While we’re doing everything we can to strengthen our control lines and fallback options and to keep the community informed and prepared- it only takes an ember to start another fire outside the lines which could make a run under these conditions. We’ve seen these fires move quickly through the landscape when the wind and weather was far more mild than is predicted from Saturday. What we’re doing today: As we have over the last few milder days today we will continue burning out targeted sections of the bush near the current fires This both removes fuel in front of the moving fire and creates a deeper and stronger edge up to our control lines These burns have mostly been occurring around the Mt Little Dick area north of Bruthen, Deptford Road, Sisters Road, Howitt Spur, Baldhead Road and along Kenny Road near Mount Elizabeth. Today there are 376 firefighters, 180 incident management/airbase/ground support staff, 176 firefighting vehicles and trucks, 74 heavy machines and 9 aircraft. You may also notice additional firefighting crews and trucks heading into communities around the current fires over coming days, ready as needed to assist with protecting communities and assets over the weekend and into early next week. Community meetings tomorrow: Tambo Crossing ‘The Rock’ 10-10:30 Ensay Hall 11-11:30 Swifts Creek Hall 12-12:30 Be prepared: We really need everyone to keep on their toes and prepare for coming days- whether you are local to East Gippsland or visiting for the holidays. New fires could start with predicted dry lightning ahead so stay informed and regularly check for updates Consider whether you need to go camping on these peak days. If you are currently camping: Consider leaving the bush before Saturday, even if only for a few days Consider staying somewhere with phone service and bring a battery operated radio to tune into your local emergency services broadcaster is strongly advised (try ABC Gippsland or TRFM) While there is not a Total Fire Ban declared currently, we strongly urge you to consider whether you really need to light a campfire, conditions are so dry that it takes very little to escape and cause a major bushfire You need to revisit your plan. If you are not familiar to the area and plan to go camping in the bush you need to determine how you will get your information, when you will leave and how. Plan this now. We’ll provide more details around expected conditions on the weekend here shortly via a video update from the Incident Controller at Bairnsdale, Ben Rankin. 07.01.2022 Non-essential travel to limit the spread of COVID-19. As a region we need to take collective responsibility in protecting our local communities from the virus and therefore strongly discourage non-essential travel to East Gippsland. Buchan Cottage will still take bookings from people with legitimate reasons to travel (e.g. work or self-isolation) however in the case of holiday related travel, we will closely review our forward bookings and negotiate with our guests to trav...el at a later date. We acknowledge this is a difficult business environment and that turning away Easter related holiday bookings is a tough decision however it is the right thing to do for our local communities and health system under these exceptional circumstances.

05.01.2022 Buchan Cottage will be open from Mon 17 Feb 2020 and are now taking bookings. www.buchancottage.com
