14.01.2022 2021 #LOVEGIPPSLAND CALENDAR COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED Three winners have been chosen for the 2021 #lovegippsland calendar competition, organised by Federal MP Darren Chester. Gippsland wildlife featured among the winners with a picture of a rainbow Lorikeet, taken by Rob Clay of Marlo and a Weedy Sea Dragon, taken by Holly Baird of Marlo both being selected. Sharon Radon from Port Albert was also a winner with a beautiful scene of the Port Albert waterfront. Mr Chester s...aid he was impressed by the high calibre and diversity of the entries. We are so lucky living in Gippsland as we have some of the most beautiful scenery right on our doorstep which this year’s calendar captures well, Mr Chester said. With over 500 entries it was a very difficult task to just choose 13 to showcase the wonderful colours and scenery of Gippsland. I hope this calendar inspires locals to get out explore Gippsland and support local businesses. The three winners will receive a hamper containing some of Gippsland’s finest produce, all other successful entries will receive a bottle of local wine. Free copies of the #lovegippsland calendar will be distributed throughout Gippsland and will also be available from Mr Chester’s electorate offices in Sale and Traralgon. See more

14.01.2022 East Gippsland wildlife rising from the ashes Camera monitoring of far East Gippsland’s forests after the fires has resulted in some great news about native wildlife survival. Southern Ark Operations Manager, Andy Murray said: We’ve had cameras out in the bush at 249 sites since April to check on the wildlife and their survival after the fires. We’re particularly interested in how the Long-footed Potoroos have fared they’re an endangered species confined to forested count...ry in East Gippsland and North-East Victoria and we weren’t sure about their ability to survive widespread and intense bushfires, Mr Murray said. The fantastic news is that the camera-trapping survey carried out from April to August revealed that we still had Long-footed Potoroos at 140 of the 249 sites, which is around 57 per cent of the sites surveyed. When we surveyed in 2016/2017, the potoroos were detected at 64 per cent of these sites, so, fortunately, there hasn’t been a catastrophic decline following the fires. They were also detected right across their known distribution in far East Gippsland, which should make it easier for the species to re-populate the forest as it recovers, and the potoroo numbers increase. The cameras also recorded the presence of a range of other mammal and bird species: Mountain and Common Brushtail Possums were surprisingly common, detected at 82 per cent of sites postfire. Superb Lyrebirds were detected at 42 per cent of the sites, Common Wombats and Swamp Wallabies were seen by around 47 per cent of the cameras. Long-nosed Bandicoots, Bush Rats, Antechinus and Ringtail Possums also popped up from time to time. This news is both a relief and a reward for the extensive fox control program that preceded the fires. The fox baiting component of the Southern Ark project has been significantly re-established, with around 95 per cent of the network now re-baited. Work continues to re-establish the rest of the network as more tracks are opened up. See more

05.01.2022 The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence aims to prevent and stop violence against women and girls. Starting on Wednesday 25 November, Gippsland Wo...men’s Health will be sharing different ways you can help prevent violence against women in our community. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence has its roots in the powerful political activism that three sisters; Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa Mirabal (pictured), carried out to actively oppose the cruelty and systematic violence of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. The sisters were killed in 1960 by Trujillo’s secret police for their political activism. The Mirabal sisters became symbols of the feminist resistance and, in commemoration of their deaths, the 25th of November was declared International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in Latin America in 1980. This international day was formally recognised by the United Nations in 1999 and now marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Action: Keep an eye on your feed over the 16 days and share posts with your network, family, and friends. If you believe someone is in immediate danger, call 000 and ask for the police. If you or someone you know is experiencing family violence, help is available. Contact SAFE STEPS 1800 015 188 a confidential and supportive family violence response line for Victoria. 02.01.2022 Parks Victoria is seeking community feedback into the rebuild of the Banksia Bluff activity centre at Cape Conran Coastal Park, which has impacted by the summer 2019/20 bushfires. The activity centre was a much-loved amenity providing an educational area for the Junior Ranger program, schools and other special interest groups. It also provided a valuable undercover recreation area and a central meeting place for campers and visitors alike. Parks Victoria are keen to hear from... you to help them understand the future usage and requirements for the activity centre. A short survey is available for you to complete on the Engage Victoria platform, until Sunday 13 December 2020.
