05.01.2022 Last week Model Farm Equestrian did a transport job for a horse to have a tooth removed due to an abscess. Many of you probably haven't seen the full tooth of a... horse before so we thought it would be quite fascinating to share a picture. Above the black line is the tooth that would be visible in the horses mouth... below the black line is the root of the tooth! We were certainly all shocked here at how big the root of a horses tooth is! See more
04.01.2022 Is pasture grass a problem for horses? Domestic horses are staring their biggest health threat right in the face, in fact they are eating it....and yet it is l...argely ignored by the equine industry. Horses eat grass right? Well they weren't ever designed to constantly graze on domestic, cultivated pasture grass. They were designed to forage for miles on rough fibrous tufts of grass that would be unrecognisable in our domestic pastures today. Our equines are facing serious health problems like never before and unless the entire equine industry begins to wake up fast to the fact that horses grazing on domestic, cultivated, fertilised grasses are being made unwell with every mouthful they eat, this epidemic of ill health will continue. Here's my top 5 list of the biggest health threats facing our domestic horses today: 1. Ulcers - fast becoming the biggest 'hidden' issue in our modern day, which is why it's top of my list 2. Laminitis - is not going away, it's getting WORSE 3. Navicular - more and more horses are being diagnosed with this debilitating problem and it's on the rise and so are the numbers of horses being put to sleep 4. Colic - goes without saying - incorrect diet, stress, gut issues - colic will kill a horse the fastest in this list 5. General lameness - arthritis, soft tissue degeneration, 'undiagnosed' lameness - now even from a very young age - why? Yep every single one of those problems above has it's root cause in incorrect diet, whether directly or indirectly. In 2019 and beyond, unless owners take the lead in helping their horses and really understanding the effects of diet on their horses' health, then the equine wallet is going to keep haemorrhaging millions and millions towards 'trying to treat' these problems, putting horses unnecessarily to sleep and lining the pockets of the big pharma companies who will never ever 'want' to do enough to stop it. Jenny Paterson, from Calm Healthy Horses, has written an article 'When Horse Meets Grass' in our latest Issue 22 of The Barefoot Horse Magazine, where she discusses how understanding diet and grass is "the aspect of horse ownership that can make the most difference in achieving your breeding and riding ambitions". The Barefoot Horse Magazine is the ONLY horse magazine on the planet to keep facing these problems head on in an attempt to bring them to the forefront and help educate and encourage horse owners with real life stories and facts. 04.01.2022 We've all struggled with our horse being crooked and stiff... Leaning in their corners, unable to keep a correct bend, or moving hollow and anxious, even being... spooky. Excess tension in the body prevents the horse from moving well but it also affects their behavior. When we use horses for riding, it is our responsibility to teach them how to use their body to best carry our weight and perform the athletic movements we ask of them. Even if all you want to do is enjoy an amble down the trail on the weekends, a soft and supple horse is a pleasure to ride, moving with better balance and less in trepidation. The downside to ignoring tension in a horse is at best slowly developing soundness issues or at worst, a behavior problem that may appear to be unpredictable but in reality has likely been building for months. In this Free Workshop You Will Learn: Why too much tension creates many behavior problems The connection between the horse’s body and emotions How your horse’s anatomy and conformation are different (and why it matters) The role of In Hand work in helping the horse become stronger and better balanced In hand exercises help the horse both physically and mentally - and through In Hand work, we improve the horse’s strength and suppleness. We teach him to be aware of his body, to bend evenly to both sides, and to move forwards, backwards, and laterally - smoothly, softly and in a biomechanically correct way.
