25.01.2022 Luang Por Karuniko After extending a 6 week visit to the monastery back in February into a 9 month personal retreat during lockdown, Luang Por Karuniko departed for the UK on Friday 20 November. He returns to Chithurst Buddhist Monastery where he was abbot for 5 years. Luang Por Karuniko will spend the UK winter there and participate in another COVID-19 lockdown. It just shows you that monks are not afraid of a bit of lockdown. We would like to express our gratitude and appre...ciation to Luang Por Karuniko for blessing us with his kind and peaceful presence throughout his stay at Buddha Bodhivana Monastery, and also for all the teachings he generously shared with us. We wish him the best of health and fruitful practice for the future. His last teaching to the community was: Don’t give up. The Sangha

25.01.2022 Instructions on developing the practice of Samadhi

23.01.2022 What makes a lockdown good? Our own actions are the cause for our happiness and the happiness of others. Today Michael and Stuart went forth as Anagarikas in the monastery. When we intend to do skilful things through body, speech and mind, we are making this into a good lockdown. Anumodana to them for their wholesome aspiration to practice the Dhamma

23.01.2022 Mudita for Luang Por Sumedho We would like to pay respects and express gratitude and appreciation for Luang Por Sumedho’s life and teachings on the occasion of his 86th birthday on 27 July 2020. The word ‘Luang Por’ means Venerable Father in Thai and is a very suitable title for Luang Por Sumedho as he was the first western disciple of Luang Por Chah and he went on to found the International Forest Monastery in Thailand, Chithurst Monastery and Amaravati Monastery in the UK, ...and many other monasteries around the world. May he have the best of health and continue to be an inspiration to Buddhists everywhere The Sangha

19.01.2022 You are welcome to prepare an offering at home and hold it while the verses offering Kathina Cloth to the Sangha are recited.

17.01.2022 Our Real Home Many people say they feel frustrated or homesick and want to go back to the way things were before. But nothing remains the way it was before. Luang Por Chah encouraged us to find our real home or the spiritual heart inside all of us. It is our real refuge and is always with us. The heart is where wisdom and understanding arises and from that we find peace. Luang Por Kalyano

17.01.2022 The Last Teaching A talk given by Luang Por Baen of Wat Doi Dhammachedi 7 days before he passed away on 16 January 2020. I am not sure what benefit or purpose there is in the way we describe people in terms of ‘us’ or ‘them’. The truth is the same for everyone, even the Buddha. Everything is dukkha, including every mental formation and every physical formation. In summary, whether we say ‘us’ or ‘them’, in the end everything goes to emptiness, emptiness and emptiness. Whethe...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Anniversary of Luang Ta Maha Bua 12th August 1913 is the date Luang Ta Maha Bua’s was born. It’s a day we remember his life and teachings with gratitude. Just before I was born, my mother and my father each had an auspicious dream. My father dreamed that he had received a very sharp knife, pointed at the tip with an elephant tusk handle and encased in a silver sheath. My father felt very pleased.... My mother, on the other hand, dreamed that she had received a pair of gold earrings which were so lovely that she couldn’t resist the temptation to put them on and admire herself in the mirror. The more she looked, the more they impressed her. My grandfather interpreted these two dreams to mean that the course of my life would follow one of two extremes. If I chose the way of evil, I would be the most feared criminal of my time. My character would be so fearsome that I was bound to end up being a crime boss of unprecedented daring and ferocity who’d never allow himself to be captured alive and imprisoned, but would hide out in the jungle and fight the authorities to the death. At the other extreme, if I chose the way of virtue, my goodness would be unequalled. I’d be bound to ordain as a Buddhist monk and become a field of merit for the world. When I grew up I noticed that all the older boys were getting married, so I thought that’s what I wanted too. One day, an old fortune teller came to visit the house of my friend. In the course of conversation, my friend blurted out that he wanted to ordain as a monk. The old man looked a bit annoyed and then asked to see the boy’s hand. Let’s take a look at the lines in your palm to see if you’re really going to be a monk. Oh! Look at this! There’s no way you’ll ordain. But I really want to ordain! No way! You’ll get married first. I suddenly got an itch to ask the old man about my fortune, since I was hoping to marry at that time. I had no intention to ordain. When I stuck my hand out, the old man grabbed it and exclaimed: This is the guy that’s going to ordain! But I want to get married. No way! Your ordination line is full. Before long you’ll be a monk. My face went flush because I wasn’t intending to be a monk at all. I want- ed to have a wife. It was strange really. After that, whenever I thought of marrying a girl, some obstacle would arise to prevent it. I even had a narrow escape after I ordained, when a girl I previously had a crush on came looking for me at the monastery, only to find that I had just moved to another place. If she’d caught me in time, who knows... Extract from the Biography of Luang Ta Maha Bua

13.01.2022 Anumodana When Luang Por Chah went to the UK, people asked him why the monks chanted after receiving their meal offering. He replied that it was their way of saying thankyou to the laity for looking after them. Yesterday we completed the annual Kathina Ceremony and the monks sewed a robe which was offered to Venerable Ajahn Karuniko. So as we approach the end of lockdown, we would like to express our thanks and appreciation to everyone who has supported the Sangha through th...e lockdown which began in March, and also supported us through this year’s Rains Retreat. We have received all your gifts of food and other donations with happiness and wish that the kindness and generosity you have shown will be a constant source of happiness for you, not only now, but in years to come when you remember 2020 - the year of lockdown. May the blessings of the Triple Gem protect you and guide you to the end of suffering.

10.01.2022 Tonight’s program will begin with 30 minutes of silent meditation, followed by some Buddhist chanting. Then a Dhamma talk by Tan Ajahn Karuniko.

06.01.2022 In Lockdown Or Out Of Lockdown We Still Need to Help Others The Sangha and lay supporters of the monastery arranged another donation of food, cleaning materials, medicines and toiletries to be distributed to those in need by the Salvos based in Box Hill. We thank Gary Hart for helping with the pick up.

03.01.2022 Good Kamma Good Lockdown Lockdown means another chance for Melburnians to help out those in need, whoever they may be. We can practice more patience with the difficulties, more mindfulness of our speech to reduce the complaints and negativity and say some kind words, and practice more regular meditation to spread thoughts of kindness and compassion to the community. Today, Richard from the Salvos came to collect another van full of food and household goods from the monastery,... to distribute to international students and others who are going without during the lockdown. Blessings to all. The Sangha
