21.01.2022 Gaining unshakable conviction of rebirth can be extremely difficult for many people, particularly if their country's culture, dominant religion, or system of ed...ucation has never encouraged them to contemplate such a thing before. There are many ways which can help us to contemplate rebirth. One such way is hearing about the many stories throughout history, and all over the world, where young children have clearly remembered their past lives - and then seeing the overwhelming evidence which supports their claims. For instance, there was recently a case in Tibet where a boy was born in a village, but as soon as he learnt to speak he insisted that he came from a different village, and that his family were there. He kept on saying the names of this village and family, and how he wanted to return. But his present biological parents had never heard of such names, and they thought that he was going crazy. They told him to stop saying such things, but he just wouldn't stop. So in the end they searched for many miles around, and they eventually found a village of that name. They then took him there, and not only did he instantly recognise the village, but he directed them to his previous family too. Moreover, he was able to correctly answer numerous questions that only this family knew the answers to. As there have been many such cases throughout history, and all over the world, there is absolutely no reason to believe that all sentient beings won't be reborn. Perhaps we can better understand this kind of logic and reasoning by using the following example. If we go to a forest of bamboos, and we cut one in half, we will find that it's hollow. We can do this again and again to some of the other bamboos, and we will find that they are also hollow. Eventually there will come a point where we won't have to continue to cut each one in half to prove that all of the bamboos in the forest are hollow. Because based on the logic and reasoning that each one that we've already cut in half is hollow, it's obvious that it's a characteristic of bamboos. Similarly, hearing about the many accounts of children who have remembered their past lives, and seeing all the evidence which supports their claims, we gain unshakable conviction of the fact that rebirth must happen to all sentient beings. The only difference is that some sentient beings can remember their past lives, and some can't. ~ Chamtrul Rinpoche

19.01.2022 Meditation Moment. 3 RELAXATION I inhale deeply as I tighten all the muscles in my face, squeezing my eyes, mouthand cheeks. Hold for a moment and then exhale as I relax those muscles completely. Now I breathe in and tighten the muscles in my neck, shoulders, andchest. Hold for a moment. Then exhale and release. Now I breathe in and I make fists with both hands and tighten all the muscles in my hands and arms. Hold those muscles tightly and then exhale and relax. I now focus... on my abdomen, hips and buttox as I breathe in and tighten all those muscles. Hold that tension and then release and exhale. I breathe in and focus on my legs and feet tightening all the muscles in that part of my body. Tighten and then release and let go as I exhale. Now I inhale and tighten all the muscles in my whole body, every part from face to feet. Hold that tension and then release as I exhale and relax completely. I let my breathing return to normal and stay in this relaxed state as long as I want. See more

18.01.2022 "The Buddha said that if were not attentive, if we dont bring all our hearts and minds, our whole being, into studying the Sutras and listening to the Dharma, we may understand them in the wrong way. Liberation is only possible when we are capable of correcting our impressions. Teachings, ideas, are like a match. The match brings about the flame, which is insight. A teaching, a notion, is not the insight. ... But if we practice, we can produce the living insight, the living wisdom. Many of us, including quite a few Buddhist scholars, are caught by words and concepts. We stick to the words, the doctrine, the teaching, and we are not free; we become dogmatic. But once we have the insight, it burns away our ideas and notions, just as the flame burns the match that brought it into being. We should never consider any teaching or ideology to be the absolute truth; it is only a means to gaining insight. We should not kill or be killed because of an idea. If we become dogmatic, we can become a dictator, wanting everyone to accept what we say, believing that we have the truth and that whoever doesnt agree with us is our enemy. This creates more war, conflict, and discrimination. Most wars have been born from fanaticism, being caught in religion or ideologies. This teaching of the Buddha, non-attachment to views, is a deep practice of peace. We are ready to release our view in order to gain the insight. That is also the spirit of science. If a scientist is attached to a finding and thinks it to be the absolute truth, he has no hope of finding something deeper, something higher. We have to burn up all notions, in order for the insight to be there. A true practitioner is never dogmatic, never clings to ideas and notions, but makes use of them to produce insight, Right View." Thich Nhat Hanh

17.01.2022 The Role of Chanting in Buddhism When you go to a Buddhist temple, you may encounter people chanting. All schools of Buddhism have some chanted liturgy, although the content of the chants varies widely. The practice may make newcomers uncomfortable. We may come from a religious tradition in which a standard text is recited or sung during a worship service, but we don't often chant. Further, in the West many of us have come to think of liturgy as a pointless vestige of an earl...Continue reading

17.01.2022 The Seven Offering Bowls and What They Represent The offerings are, from the very beginning, the whole purpose of a shrine. On a shrine with representations of the Three Jewels, one must dedicatedly and with great joyfulness make offerings. The offerings are made from shrine right to shrine left. On the shrine’s right, the first of the seven offerings is the drinking water. Music, the last offering, would be on the shrine’s far left. Only the so-called wrathful offerings wou...Continue reading

15.01.2022 Everyone Is My Teacher Thay says... What is the role of a teacher in spiritual practice?... A friend can be a teacher, a fellow practitioner can be a teacher, and you yourself can be a teacher. A teacher is any- one who helps you practice and find more freedomeven freedom from your teacher. You have to be intelligent and not be dependent on your teacher. If you follow him or her with blind faith, its not good. There is no perfect teacher. You can learn the good things from him or her, and you can also help your teacher to be better. very soon there will be a teacher within you, and you can follow that teacher. So a good teacher is someone who helps you not depend on him or her all your life. That is why the Buddha said before he died, go back to yourself. Take refuge in the island within you. You are not lost when your teacher is no longer in human form, because your teacher is always alive in you and in his disciples. When I practice calligraphy, sometimes I invite my late teacher to join me, so as teacher and disciple we do it together. Breathing in, half the circle. Breathing out, the other half. When I smile, my teacher smiles. I invite all teachers of the past to do a circle with me, and I know that my hand is not my hand. My hand is also my fathers hand and my mothers hand. Sometimes I invite all my friends to do it with me, because they are me also. Excerpt from article: You Have the Buddha in You: An Interview with Thich Nhat Hanh

12.01.2022 Why do we Prostrate? When we prostrate, we seek to purify our delusions, negativities and our bad karma. His Holiness teaches us that as long as we humans suffer from delusions, we are making bad karma intentionally and unintentionally all the time, from morning to night. To counteract our bad actions, one thing we can do is to engage in wholesome spiritual practices, like reciting mantras, or making offerings or prostrations

10.01.2022 Hope you are all safe & well? With the announcement this week by our Victorian Government for a six week stage 3 lock down on Melbourne Metro unfortunately we are unable to open our little centre as planned. We are saddened too but know we individually we need to do the right thing now so that long term we can be together. At this stage we are thinking we will be back for Term 4 which will be after the September school holidays. We are certainly learning all about impermanenc...e this year and that what we held to tightly yesterday is likely not held as tight today. Stay safe, stay connected and we as a teachers group will continue to share teachings for you to view. There are a few more classes being made available online which you may like to view or connect with in the short term: https://fpmt.org The FPMT is an organisation devoted to preserving and spreading Mahayana Buddhism worldwide by creating opportunities to listen, reflect, meditate on dharma. https://www.dalailama.com The office of HH Dalai Lama his holiness is doing a number of live online teachings which is a wonderful opportunity to be present with an authentic teacher of dharma. 08.01.2022 A Day in the Life of a Buddhist The Buddhist teachings provide plentiful advice about how to lead our daily lives. Take a look below.... When We Wake Up Upon waking and before getting up, we should feel incredibly happy and grateful that were still alive, ready to face a new day. We set a strong intention to: Make the day meaningful. Not waste the precious opportunity we have to work on ourselves and to help others. If we have to go to work, we make up our minds to try and be concentrated and productive. We wont get angry, impatient or grumpy with our co-workers. Well be friendly with everyone, but wont waste peoples time with meaningless chatter and gossip. If were looking after our family, we resolve not to lose our patience, but to take care of their physical and emotional needs the best we can, with loving care. Morning Meditation Normally, we might meditate for a short while before breakfast. Just five or ten minutes sitting calmly, focusing on the breath and getting centered will. We reflect on how our lives are intertwined with those of everyone around us. How they feel and act affect us and everyone else, and we generate a warm feeling of love: May they all be happy, as well as compassion: May they all be free of unhappiness and any problems they have. We resolve that, today, we will try to help others in whatever way we can, and if thats not possible, well at least refrain from causing any harm. Mindfulness During the Day Throughout the day, we try to remain mindful of how were acting, speaking, thinking and feeling. We especially try to notice if disturbing emotions like anger, greed, jealousy, arrogance and so on try to creep in. We take note when were acting selfishly or insensitively, or with self-pity and prejudice. On a subtler level, we aim to become aware of when were projecting absurd stories about ourselves, others, and situations in general. We look out for those moments where we imagine well never get our turn in that long queue, that no one could ever love someone like us, and when all we feel is poor me. When we catch ourselves acting, speaking or thinking compulsively with any of these troublemakers, we apply another level of mindfulness. Firstly, we try to stop ourselves before we do or say something that well later regret. If weve already acted this way, we stop immediately before we do or say something worse. We do the same if we find ourselves in a cycle of negative thinking. We keep in mind the antidotes to quiet down and counter these mental and emotional disturbances, and apply and sustain them until weve regained our composure. An example that most of us can identify with is when someone at work or home criticizes us or does something that really annoys us. We should: Remember that yelling doesn't help, and try to calm down through focusing on the breath, just like we did in the morning. Recall that everyone wants to be happy and not unhappy, but that most people are confused and act in ways that bring problems. Generate the wish for them to be happy and have the causes of happiness. Point out the negative effects of their behavior if they're open to our advice, and ask them to stop. If they're totally unresponsive, remain silent and take the incident as a lesson in patience. Still, we should never stand by passively if we can end some kind of disturbance. One of the main things to control is the instinct to become defensive when others criticize us. We can remain calm and examine honestly to see if what they said was right and if it was, then we can apologize and correct our behavior. If what they said was nonsense, we just drop it if its unimportant. If it concerns an issue that matters, we can point out their faulty thinking, as long as we do it without any hint of condescension or aggression. Evening Meditation Before we sleep at night, we can do another short meditation to calm down from the days activities, by focusing once more on the breath. We review the days events and see how weve dealt with them. Did we lose our temper, or say something foolish? If so, we regret that we werent able to control ourselves, and then without any sense of guilt, resolve to do better tomorrow. We also note when weve handled situations wisely and kindly. We rejoice in that and resolve to continue further in that direction. We then go to sleep, looking forward to tomorrow when we can continue working on ourselves and helping others. We can feel really happy that were making our precious lives so meaningful. Study Buddhism Home 2003-2019 Berzin Archives e.V. Impressum

I let go of judgment of others and especially of myself. I let go of expectations of how I think it should be. I let go of needing to be right. I release feelings of lack and fear. I have enough of what I need. I let go of relationships that no longer serve me. I am supported in all ways. I easily and freely release and let go of thoughts, feelings, and attachments that are not helpful to my being the very best person I can be. I let go of anything that is holding me back from fulfilling my lifes purpose. I am free.

04.01.2022 Meditation moment. 2 BREATH I sit up straight with my spine erect but relaxed. I take a deep breath, inhaling fully, holding for a moment and then exhaling slowly and completely. I feel the energy my breath brings to every cell and molecule of my being. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Exchanging energy. Bringing in fresh, new, life giving energy. Letting go of what is old and used. My breath is bringing in the life force. I let go of what is unneeded. In and out. With each breath, I am restoring and revitalizing myself. I am completely refreshed with each breath I take. I am healthy. I am alive.
