22.01.2022 Hello everyone, Hinterland Equine is holding another Gastroscope Day on December the 2nd [Wednesday] Gastroscopy is the only way to accurately diagnose stomach... ulcers in horses. Ulcers are extremely common and can cause signs of colic, weight loss, poor performance, behavioural issues and much more. Gastroscopy is also used to identify tumors, impactions, and other issues. If you are interested in having your horse scoped for gastric ulcers, please call the clinic on 0419 650 470 to make a booking. The cost will be $110 per horse, including sedation.

22.01.2022 THE THING ABOUT HORSES ... He MUST be good to load on the float He MUST have no dirt! He MUST be good to catch! ... I could go on, but I’m sure you have all read and heard the statements, and many many many many more. As soon as I see this in a wanted ad, or hear someone talking about it, I know two things. 1. They have probably had a problem in one of these areas before. 2. They didn’t learn how to fix it. It seems like witchcraft that the people who strive so hard to find these horses that fit the MUST list, actually end up with exactly what they don’t want. Here’s my feelings on that - If I didn’t train it, I don’t own it. If I buy a horse that can do 86 one time changes in a row, and I don’t know what a flying change is, then I’m not going to be able to perform 86 one time changes on my new fancy horse. Maybe I could stay in the saddle for a few, but it would dwindle down until the horse either quit doing them, or got anxious about it and did something else instead. If I get a horse with a fantastic stop, and I use a different cue, or release out of time, my horse isn’t going to have a good stop for long. Then factor in poorly fitting gear, difficult surfaces, a random work schedule, some junk food and badly fitting shoes, perhaps a dose anxiety or uncertainty, or lack of faith in the new leader, and suddenly we have a horse that has changed from the well mannered, reliably loading, easy to catch beast we MUST have. Look at the gear, look at the diet, look at the housing and workload, the quality and quantity of work, and look in the mirror. Rarely is the problem, the problem. The problem is a SYMPTOM of the actual problem. Which may be several small problems, culminating in one bigger SYMPTOM. If you want a horse that’s great to load on the float, learn how to load horses on the float. If you want a horse that’s great to catch, learn how to teach a horse to be caught. If you want a horse with no dirt, learn what causes these behaviours and how to identify and diffuse the small sticky bits before they become symptoms of something much bigger. Learn how to train it, so you can own it.

11.01.2022 A couple of our Buderim girls were plaiting up a storm last weekend in preparation for our Official CT. Did you know that Plaiting the horses mane goes back to the days when soldiers rode horses into battle. The plaiting helped prevent their muskets getting caught in the horses mane! Fun fact .

06.01.2022 You can't rush something that needs time to grow. It breaks my heart that part of the equestrian industry revolves around flipping horses and getting to that bi...g venue before the horse is ready. I'm not impressed like I once was, with the 4 year olds that have been to BYEH. Nor am I impressed with the 6 year old training at advanced/medium. After a 15 year love story with this sport, I know enough to wonder where those horses will be at the age of 10 nevermind 15. Will they still be with the riders that pushed them too soon? Will they be injected with steroids just so they can finish the season? Whilst I understand pushing too soon isn't signing an invisible death warrant for all youngsters, it does inevitably end in an early uncomfortable retirement. Yet this is something that is widely accepted and ignored. I have big ambitions for Orion, the kind that make people giggle because I cry on hacks sometimes. Despite those plans, Orion's ambitions include snoozing and a bigger hay net. He doesn't care about championships, he cares that I am kind to him. He's rising 6, he is still growing. I repeat, he is still growing. Cantering a 20m circle is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest or doing a three point turn in a cruise ship. It's hard work, it's hard for his joints and muscles that aren't developed fully, despite him looking like a small bungalow. I honestly believe the social media generation are fueling this issue. Brand sponsorships always want to know your achievements and the next big goal. It constantly feels like a box ticking exercise when in reality your dealing with an animals life. It seemingly feels like people aren't impressed unless you have a ball gown made out of sashes you won the previous season. That brands sift through thousands of application videos and overlook those doing things properly because they aren't jumping 1m45 bareback, backwards whilst reading a dressage test with a parrot on their head. I won't rush Orion's education or make false promises about unachievable short term goals to secure the backing of any brand. If that is what you're looking for, you need to reroute the Sat-nav. One day this horse will walk on the holy grounds of Badminton (grassroots ) but until that day he will hack on the buckle end, wear his duck rug and wobble around the arena until he tells me he's ready. If he's never ready, he will be loved regardless. A horse will give you the world if you give them your heart...and a little bit of time.

06.01.2022 The Psoas Muscle and the Confidence Button! The psoas major is the "fear muscle". It connects from your spine to your femur and it closes your hip angle when yo...u get scared. You can't directly keep this muscle from contracting- if you are scared or nervous, it WILL close your hip angle. This is why you see so many riders leaning forwards, pulling on reins, and no matter how hard they try, they CAN'T sit back! So what can we do about it? Well, all our muscles have opposing muscles. Muscles work in sync- as one set contracts, the opposing muscles must extend. So if you can contract the muscles opposing the psoas, you can get the psoas to knock it off! your opposing muscles are the muscles in your butt that open the hip. But those muscles can contract in all sorts of ways, and we need THE specific movement that will re-open the hip! The best visualization I've come up with is to "ENGAGE THE CONFIDENCE BUTTON"!! Pretend you have a button, right at the top of your butt crack, that when you press it down into the saddle, will flood you with sticky seat super powers! Because it does! When you tuck your tailbone, lift your pubic bone, and engage your lower abs, it opens and relaxes your hip joints, enabling you to sit most evasions or spooks that your horse may dish out. It also puts you in a position where if you really HAVE to pull your horse's lips to his ears, at least you are able. Your seat will be in a strong position to both keep you on, and to influence your horse. (These are my sketches, you can share the whole post, but don't steal my art.) See more

05.01.2022 We are so lucky to have such great facilities in the heart of Buderim. Our club is run by volunteers to ensure a safe, fun atmosphere and learning experience for our members and their horsey best friends. Our agisted horses are now super lucky to have shelters in each paddock (though some of them havent quite figured out standing under the shelter yet)!!!... Its a big job keeping the grounds well maintained and the club economically viable but seeing the smiles on our club members faces at our musters and get togethers is well worth the effort. If you have an equine best friend why not join our lovely club and make some great friends along the way!!

03.01.2022 DO YOU HANDLE YOUR HORSE COMPASSIONATELY? How we handle and train our horses is extremely important, not just for our horses welfare but also for the effect th...at it has on our relationship and our safety. Training is essential, it is not a luxury or something to do at the weekend. Horses need to know how to behave around people and be prepared for as many situations as possible. How we train our horses will understandably have a lasting impact on how they feel about us. If you use force or bully your horse to do what you ask they will associate you with the fear or discomfort they feel at the time. This is when relationships start to break down and difficult behaviours begin, and the horse will start to say no. No, they dont want to be caught, no they dont want to be ridden, no they dont want to interact with you. And why should they? Create a good relationship with your horse by ensuring they arent fearful or incapable of performing what you are asking, provide calm equine company, use positive training methods that reward your horse when he does the right thing, stay calm yourself and your horse will learn to trust you. Compassionate handling leads to better welfare and safer horses as well as faster results for horse owners. The Brooke, Action For Working Horses and Donkeys have produced a brilliant evidence-based factsheet with information about why good handling matters. Plus, there are some useful tips for you to handle your horse more compassionately. You can download a copy here: https://www.thebrooke.org//CompassionateEquineHandlingWeb.
