17.01.2022 On the 4th and 5th July 2020, the last ever Jodo and Iaido Seminar and Shinsa was held at the old dojo in Canning Vale. On the 5th, Australia’s first ever Iaido Yondan Shinsa (grading) was held without Japanese support. 15.01.2022 It’s a new year - Want to be happier? then learn something new.... Why will this make you happier? ‘It’s actually a core need for psychological wellbeing. Learning can help us build confidence and a sense of self-efficacy. It can also be a way of connecting with others too. As human beings, we have a natural desire to learn and progress, indeed one of the things that people need to be happy is to be engaged in difficult-but-doable activities. Psychologists call it mastery -... and so do martial artists. If you have ever wanted to try martial arts and get a ‘black belt’ that is truly earned not given; get mastery and have the joy of learning a niche skill to pass onto others, but think that the youth required has passed you by, think again. Iaido & Jodo are two weapons-based arts that mature adults perhaps not at peak fitness and flexibility can still master. Indeed, maturity, patience and life experience will help you here more than physical prowess and flexibility. At 50 I’m the Senior Student at Budokan Martial Arts Academy, a 4th Dan in these arts working hard to 'level up' each few years. I started in my 30’s after a knee injury stopped my Taekwondo training - but as you can see, I'm still learning and progressing towards mastery.
