25.01.2022 A great article explaining how bushfires can affect Common Brown butterflies. Hopefully we will start to see more Common Browns, after the recent good rain, in late summer - early autumn.

25.01.2022 This is an excellent short video showing bee life cycles, from egg to metamorphosis.

23.01.2022 Bug Blitz recently participated in the Sale Music Festival and we had a great day educating children and their families. Thank you and congratulations to the organisers of another great family day.

23.01.2022 Although it is hard to beat the tactile feeling of holding a book, electronic books (ebooks) are fast becoming the way of the future. Not only are they environmentally friendly (however, they can be printed) they provide an enjoyable reading experience. In keeping with the times, Bug Blitz has produced four ebooks (more to follow) for teachers, students and the community. Each ebook has easy to follow information and activities. If you would like to gain FREE access, please message Bug Blitz with your contact details and which ebooks you are interested in and Bug Blitz will email a copy to you. Happy reading! #BugBlitz #eBooks #biodiveristyreading #naturetopics #electronicreading #teachingresources

23.01.2022 An interesting TEDEd video explaining Dead Zones in our oceans and the impact that humans are having towards an increase of algae growth (eutrophication).

22.01.2022 Hello all our Facebook friends! Do you have a passion for nature, a curious mind and enjoy working with children? Or know someone who does? Then we would like to speak with you/them! Private message us for more details

20.01.2022 BE CURIOUS!!! Is what Dr Ken Walker head of Entomology at the Melbourne Museum inspired the students from Sale College and adults with as he presented a fascinating live Q&A at @bond.street.events as part of Bug Blitzs ED talks.. #bugblitz #citizenscience #bringingscientisttosale #bees #climatechange

20.01.2022 This amazing fungi was found by the Bush Kinder group from Gumnuts in Sale. We believe it is a Stinkhorn Fungi. The Stinkhorn fungi omits a strong carrion odour, which attracts flies who help spread the spores. The smell attracts dogs and some believe, if ingested, it may cause upset stomach in them. This species is also called the Sea anemone fungus as well, due to the tentacles. Great find Gumnuts kids!

20.01.2022 Bug Blitz was fortunate on this magic Winters day, to board The Rubeena @portofsaleheritagecruise and head down the river and out into Lake Wellington. What a beautiful part of the world we live in! #exploregippsland #heartmorass #bugblitz #bondstreeteventcentre #rubeena #wellingtonshire

Check out the program and book yourself and the kids a spot! #BugBlitz #SummerbytheSea #handsonelearning #Summer2020

19.01.2022 We wanted to share some of the Biodiversity Poems that Bug Blitz has received from students during remote learning. This was part of an initiative to have students words incorporated into the new Biodiverse artwork in Sale. We love them!!! If your children would like to participate, please ask them to write a poem about how biodiversity and nature make the feel and send through to our Facebook page or private message. A big thanks to Araluen Primary School and Willow Scott for their contribution. #BugBlitz #Biodiverse #poetry #JoelGailer #remotelearning #childrenswordsmatter

18.01.2022 In the bug world, theres always something to learn. Try this activity to see what particular families of Slater bugs are in your backyard. Hands on discovery learning. Good luck! Please send us feedback or feel free to ask any questions via our fb page. You can also call with the number listed on our page.

17.01.2022 https://mpavilion.org/program/bug-blitz/ Welcome to Bug Blitz 2020! If you are in the city, come and see what lives in the ponds, meet the Arthropods and paint a Sacred Kingfisher to take home! #Bugblitz #handsonlearning #natureeducation

16.01.2022 Bug Blitz is proud to announce that our Wood or Forest Scorpion (Cercophonius squama), has given birth to live youngsters. They are known to have 20-30 young in late summer and early autumn. We photographed the fluorescent scorpion recently using a UV light. A chemical substance in a layer of their exoskeleton causes them to glow. Experts believe there are 3 possibilities for this. 1. It protects them from sunlight 2. Helps them to find each other at night 3. It could play a role in deterring potential predators.

16.01.2022 Artist, Ronald Edwards-Pepper, worked with students from Wurruk PS to complete this magnificent painting, which illustrates the Gunai-Kurnai creation story Boorun the Pelican and Tuk the Musk Duck. Wurruk PS will display this painting in their school to celebrate their Gunai-Kurnai cultural and languages program. Meeting Places and Footprints were also painted by Ronald and the kids. Two of the four paintings completed, will be displayed at the Gippsland Base Hospital, outside the Paediatrics Ward. The four originals have been printed and installed in the Childrens Maze at Lake Guyatt, for all to see. Magnificent work by all. Thank-you to the John Leslie Foundation for supporting this project.

15.01.2022 Finally, after many years of keeping an eye out for a Victorian Funnel-Web, I found one last night in my lounge room. Dr Ken Walker identified this spider. To give 100% certainty, Dr Walker would have to photograph the specimens fangs to see if it has three rows of teeth on its fangs (Funnel Webs), or two rows of teeth (Trapdoor) spiders. This is most likely a Funnel Web and it will be released, outside of course, when I get home tonight.

15.01.2022 "Whilst the children are away the spiders will play". Narelle Ingle found this beauty in the school grounds at Araluen in Sale. It is a Net casting spider, Deinopis subrufa. After seeing many 1000s of spiders found by children at Bug Blitz field events, this is the first time I have come across a Net casting spider. You will notice two bumps on the spider's abdomen. These are a diagnostic feature of Net casting spiders. They are also referred to as Ogre-faced spiders. The second photo shows their large front eyes, which give them good vision. Thanks Narelle!

14.01.2022 https://youtu.be/9w4S1tk8EGE This activity is an audio soundscape to develop students LISTENING skills and is suited for year 3 and up. The soundscape was composed by Greg Laws who worked with students from Loch Sport and Seaspray Primary schools at a Bug Blitz biodiversity field event in 2019. ... There is a corresponding activity sheet "Do you hear what I hear" where students listen to the audio to locate information and answer the questions. We hope you enjoy it! #biodiversityeducation #listeningskills #bugblitz #hughwilliamsonfoundation Loch Sport, VictoriaCelebrate Seaspray West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority Wellington Shire Council Maffra District Landcare Gippsland ResourceSmart Schools East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority

14.01.2022 This beautiful and unusually marked King Parrot visited my home this evening. I love how inquisitive and sociable King Parrots are.

12.01.2022 Thanks to support from the John Leslie Foundation and the Wellington Shire Council, Bug Blitz Trust has commissioned a sculpture named Biodiverse, which will be installed at Lake Guthridge later this year. Melbourne artist, Dr Joel Gailer, has teamed up with local indigenous poet Electra McClellan, to integrate text and form in the work. Local children are contributing biodiversity words and phrases for inclusion on the final work, via a Mail Art project Electra and Joel have included to seek community input. When finished, the sculpture will stimulate people to consider biodiversity from a range of perspectives.

12.01.2022 This week we wanted to share with a sneak peak into our new "Bone Discovery Trail." Bug Blitz has some exciting new additions to our collection, which we cant wait to share with you (when things get back to normal and we can commence our field events again). In the meantime, can you guess what animal this skull belongs to? Tell us your answers to see if you are on the right track!! #isolationbiodiversitylearning #handsonelearning #bugblitz #skulls

10.01.2022 We hope all our friends are coping with the COVID-19 emergency, as best as they can. We wish you all well. In a way, the picture below of a diatom (algae) collected by students at Licola 2014 using a plankton net, reminds me of the importance of providing students with opportunities to explore the microscopic world around them. Science education is a breeding ground for future microbiologists. Go well everybody!

10.01.2022 This video shows how to undertake a backyard bug survey to explore if certain types of plants are more popular with bugs than others. 10.01.2022 Bug Blitz would like to extend our thoughts to everyone affected by the fires including the beautiful biodiversity of our country. Thankyou to our CFA and volunteers and to everyone who is pitching in to help and donate.

09.01.2022 Lesson notes to be used with the video What Bugs Live in What Shrubs? These provide the procedure for students wanting to undertake this activity. Page 2 is the data recording sheet for the experiment. Wishing you all good luck and, be careful!! Let us know how you go and any results you found.

08.01.2022 During these challenging times, Bug Blitz Trust would like to help school teachers and students to continue their education programs by offering biodiversity, science and environment lessons for students to complete at home. We will try to provide activities that are suited to a range of age levels, develop student thinking skills and reinforce key learning objectives in Victorian Curriculum F-10. We will endeavour to include hands on investigations of biodiversity, which c...an be undertaken by students in their own backyards. We will upload new lessons every Tuesday and Wednesday as photo files for teachers, parents and students to download and print off as they require, . Any questions can be asked through messenger on the Bug Blitz facebook page. Our first two lessons could be described as Bug Maths, a classic how many legs problem and symmetry in the bug world. We hope these lessons help teacher planning and student learning. Best wishes to all. See more

08.01.2022 Happy Friday! We wanted to share with you another biodiversity inspired activity, this time it is aimed at Year 1, 2 & 3 (VCELA179) and asks students to use adjectives, adverbs and unusual verbs to enhance their writing. This is a great opportunity to use nature as writing inspiration. Happy writing!!! #biodiversityeducation #natureeducation #remoteschooling #bugblitz

07.01.2022 This one is for the younger kids (with a little help from an adult). Is it living or non-living? There are some simple questions to ask yourself to determine the answer. After completing, take your children outside and discover together things in your yard that are either living or non-living! We are always up for some photos of your discoveries! #onlinebiodiversityeducation #bugblitz #earlychildhood #naturestudies

07.01.2022 A little video of the Bush fire recovery works to ensure our aquatic animals will survive into the future. Nice work!!

06.01.2022 Parks week at Yarram Memorial Park was a fun day for the children from Yarram schools. Thanks to Tracey Parker and the Wellington Shire for celebrating our fantastic parks and outdoor learning in them.

04.01.2022 Today Frankie and Olive set out to do the Bug Blitz Slater or Pill Bug activity. The girls were amazed to find so many underneath the bin! Yes, there were definitely some that rolled up and others that did not. They kept a tally and the results = Pill bug (11) Vs Slater (3). We encourage you to experience this with your kids, it was lots of fun! #biodiversitylearningathome #outsidelearning #bugblitz

04.01.2022 Hello, as our followers would be aware, due to the current situation, Bug Blitz are unable to take students out into the environment to actively engage and learn about biodiversity. Therefore, we would like to offer a range of activities over the coming weeks, to suit the different year levels. We hope that teachers may pass these onto their students, or parents can offer them to their children, to incorporate some Science and Nature Education at home. This Classification Activity is directed towards Year 7, however, we believe it may be one for the whole family too! Thankyou and take care - Bug Blitz.

03.01.2022 An interesting TEDEd video explaining 'Dead Zones' in our oceans and the impact that humans are having towards an increase of algae growth (eutrophication).

02.01.2022 Student activity: BUG THINKING - THE PROCESS OF ELIMINATION. Suitable: years 3-6 students The human race is constantly trying to eliminate certain creatures. Weve spent 100 years or more trying to get rid of pesky mosquitos, whilst at the same time we are trying to conserve beneficial invertebrates like bees and worms. If you had to, which three bugs would you eliminate?

02.01.2022 You may have seen the estimate suggesting 500 million mammals, birds & reptiles have been killed by the ongoing catastrophic bushfires in Australia. What about ...insects? For just a single beetle family the number of animals killed in the fires is ~3,150,000,000. Wet and dry forests of the Otway Ranges (SE. Australia): 88 two square metre leaf litter samples (all 2019). Average of >1,000,000 beetles/hectare in leaf litter in the ten most abundant #beetle families. Almost half are from one family: Staphylinidae. Research by Dr Nick Porch

02.01.2022 Well done to the Friends of Cornish Hill Daylesford Discussion. One way we can respond to our environmental crisis is to increase environmental and sustainability education on a massive scale. This helps empower children through building their eco literacy. Environmental Education is a form of direct action. Well done Friends of Cornish Hill.

02.01.2022 Bug Blitz has got the "bug" about being back, doing what we do best- taking children out into nature and exploring and celebrating our beautiful biodiversity!! Though a little different (adhering to Covid-19 guidelines and limited numbers) we have kicked off with two awesome filed events with Metung Primary School at Metung and Araluen Primary School at The Heart Morass Restoration Project. Check out just some of the diversity the students found!!! #biodiversityeducation #bugblitz #gippsland Wetlands Environmental Taskforce
