22.01.2022 What a week it has been. Running around hectic - barely making deadlines - and then coming across computers that shouldnt be made. For years I have been recommending HP, as a solid build PC or Laptop - basically the next best thing to a BuggFix made one. And then they release computers with the AMD E-Series CPU. Actually I should complain to AMD too! Love your CPUs - have only used AMD CPUs since the K6-2 and then you build this crappy E1.... Seriously - what is it good for. Yes, it allows consumers to buy a $400 PC - that is then useless, because even Word 2013 takes forever to load. On my sub contracting job I do come across a lot of people with little to lots of IT Knowledge. But when people go to the popular retailers to buy a new computer and walk away with something that is slower than their current computer then something is wrong. Who would expect that the new computer they just bought cheap is slower than their old clunker? After all the new one is sleek and shiny. One client I managed to save straight away - As I unpacked her new HP20 I mentioned to her that the Dual 1.35 GHz E1 would be a lot slower than her old 2.4GHz Dual Core Intel - and she was shocked - as the salesman told her it is a good computer and would run all the programs she currently had However when I rang, and spoke to the manager and mentioned what she had bought, and that it needed to run a data base - he immediately agreed to take it back - even though it was opened - and give her full credit to something better. And a day later the same thing, a client had bought the same crappy HP20 - has had it for 6 weeks and asked me to speed it up, as she couldnt do anything with it. I had to tell her that there was nothing we could do with that all in one PC - then rang the company she bought it from - told them that it was unusable - and was immediately offered a full credit on return. So - here is my warning. If you buy a PC or laptop under $700 (roughly) you are buying complete and utter crap. It will not run well. it will not do what you want it to - but it will make you wait for anything. And waste your time. After all we had 1.5GHz Cpus in mid 2002 - 13 years ago. And even though the new CPUs are Dual Core with the x64 architecture - it certainly doesnt make it compatible with modern CPUs - or computing. Mind you the new Intel Atom, and Pentiums and Celeron - and all their other junk is not much better. So, even for a basic system - make sure you buy a system with an AMD A4 or higher CPU @ 3.5GHz or more, unless you want an ultra portable laptop - or an Intel i3, i5 or i7 @ above 2 GHz Or if in doubt ask the experts at BuggFix. We wont sell you the cheap crap. End of rant! See more

19.01.2022 We’ve just released our roadmap to carefully ease COVID-19 restrictions to start getting Western Australians back to work safely and begin the process of re-sta...rting the State’s economy. This plan includes specific details on the next phase of easing restrictions in WA which will take effect on Monday 18 May. Western Australia has already implemented many of the changes announced by the Prime Minister on Friday. We have led the way, and other States have looked to us for guidance on the way forward. Our strong performance in controlling the spread of COVID-19 means we will continue to lead the nation when it comes to easing restrictions. Our plan has been developed in conjunction with the National Cabinet framework and is based on the best health advice for Western Australia. Phase 1 is already in place following the cautious relaxing of some restrictions from Monday, 27 April. Phase 2 will focus on encouraging many Western Australians to return to work, unless they are unwell or vulnerable, so the WA economy can further rebuild in a safe and measured way. The new phase will come into effect from Monday, 18 May, giving businesses and families time to plan accordingly and includes: - Indoor and outdoor non-work gatherings lifted to 20 people; - People are encouraged to return to work, unless they are unwell or vulnerable; - Cafés and restaurants can reopen with meal service (including within pubs, bars, clubs, hotels and casino), limited to 20 patrons and the 4 square metre per person capacity rule applied; - Weddings and funerals, limited to up to 20 attendees indoors or 30 outdoors; - Places of worship, community facilities and libraries to re-open, limited to 20 patrons; - Community sports (non-contact) limited to 20 people; - Outdoor or indoor fitness classes (minimal shared equipment) limited to 20 patrons; - Public swimming pools can open under strict rules (one indoor pool and one outdoor pool), limited to 20 patrons per pool. If businesses or premises want to reopen in line with these changes, they will be required to complete an official COVID Safety Plan. More details on this will be released shortly, in consultation with industry. As part of Phase 2, regional travel restrictions will also change, bringing the number of current borders within WA from 13 to only four (not including the Commonwealth Biosecurity zone and remote communities). The new regional boundaries will allow: - Travel between the South West, Great Southern, Wheatbelt, Perth and Peel regions; - Travel between the Mid-West, Gascoyne and Pilbara regions (excluding Biosecurity area); - Travel within the Goldfields-Esperance region (excluding the Biosecurity area); - Travel permitted within the Kimberley Local Government areas (the Biosecurity area remains in place). Following this change, it is expected that Phase 3 will be implemented around four weeks from the commencement of Phase 2. Phase 3 will be finalised in the coming weeks, based on the advice from the Chief Health Officer, and will take into account the infection rates across WA. Phase 3 will focus on continuing to build stronger links within the community and include further resumption of commercial and recreational activities, and may include: - Further increases in number of people allowed at indoor and outdoor non-work gatherings; - Possible further relaxation of regional travel restrictions; - Restrictions further relaxed for gyms, health clubs and indoor sport centres; - Contact community sport (indoor and outdoor) permitted, with gathering limits; - Beauty therapy and personal care services permitted; - Auction houses and real estate auctions (not just online as it is currently); and - Public playgrounds, outdoor gym equipment, skate parks, zoos, cinemas, galleries, museums and concert venues permitted to open, with gathering limits. Phase 4 and further future easing of restrictions will be assessed and finalised in due course. Western Australia’s hard border with the rest of Australia will remain in place, and is expected to be among the final restrictions lifted. For more information on this roadmap and the easing of restrictions, please visit www.wa.gov.au

19.01.2022 Can someone please explain to me why nobody ever calls when you are not busy and have no work - yet as soon as you are solidly booked and busy everybody wants you?

19.01.2022 Thank god for System Image Back-Up If only I had time for my own network. Sometime yesterday morning my Mail Server decided to stop sending and receiving, after an update went wrong. I managed to restart the server on my way out the door - but instead of fixing it made things worse. And here I was out of the house - not to return till later in the evening.... Checked settings and started a repair last night - and still no joy. But I thought sleep is better than e-mail. So - looked at it again this morning - and decided to restore a backup from the night before - much easier than fixing. Thats when the trouble started and I could not restore the back-up to my normal RAID setup. I had to restore it to individual hard drives and create the RAID again tomorrow, after a new, updated back-up. Arent computers fun? But if I hadnt had a back-up I would still be sitting here re-installing SBS 2011, reconnecting clients, Anti virus etc, etc, etc. So on that note - how is your back up. And is it a proper system image, or just a few files, which would still force you to re-install everything? See more

17.01.2022 And there was a blast from the past. Fixed an old Computer with MSI Motherboard that the lady bought 2nd hand. Had returned it to her after a fresh install of Windows including upgrade to Windows 10. And it was running well. 2 Days later she called - it didnt start up anymore. Just a cursor on a black screen. After going through the BIOS with her - we found a USB Hard drive had inserted itself into the boot order and stopped Windows being loaded. And yes, in the late 00s it happened al the time.

14.01.2022 It has been a while since I posted here. But last week I had so many issues with Westnet (or should I say iiNet - or TPG) One client did get connected to the proper NBN, not Turnbulls watered down option. The Modem (supplied by Westnet) had a WAN port marked in orange and 4 LAN ports marked in yellow. The installer left a short yellow LAN cable connected to the NBN box and a long orange one to connect a Foxtel box to the internet. So when I got the cables were connected accor...ding to colour - when they needed to be the other way around. To confuse the issue more, a normal phone cable was also connected - and so this modem, since it could not create a NBN Connection managed to connect through the old ADSL sporadically. What a mess. Once I disconnected the phone cable and connected the Ethernet cables correctly all started working - but the support from Westnet was next to useless. Over an hour waiting for them to answer - and by the time they did I had guessed the settings correctly and everything was working. Fast Forward one day and again a client with a Westnet problem - ADSL 2 connection with under 1 mbps connection speed. We used Wernets call back feature and left my phone details about 16:15 in the afternoon. We were told by recorded message it would take more than an hour. So I set everything in motion for the client to used a 4G Service until her she could connect to the NBN, which should be within the next 6 month - and forgot all about it. Until Westnet called me at 11:20 at night. And if that wasnt bad enough - I did not answer my mobile at the time the rang twice - but havent heard from them again. So another hour wait minimum if I really wanted them. What a useless service! See more

05.01.2022 And more fun today. A laptop with Orange Juice spilt on it - and no back-up of the data. Here you see the hard drive, resting in a container of rice - and we are hoping it will remove the moisture - and allow me to recover data. All I need to do know is google how long I should wait.

05.01.2022 OK - finally got this started - now all I need to do is update the website.

04.01.2022 Time for another cruise

02.01.2022 Had a call out to a Business Client near Fremantle. They are using a HP All-in-One Touchscreen. Computer has stopped because the CPU Fan failed. I took the PC off-site to get to the fan - and found this flimsy piece of plastic with a electric motor and fan blades. No wonder it failed. I then tried to get a replacement part - and have not experienced so much frustration in ages. I tried to find the part on-line - but the number of the fan didnt match up to anything google ...could find. I tried HP website, but all they want to do is sell a new Computer. I rang their support, finally got some info - and a heart attack. They wanted $148.something for that little bit of plastic. But could not tell me about availability. They were going to call back but never did - so I thought I speak to the HP Staff at the Synnex Alliance, which I went to last night - and no-one there could give me a number for HP Spare Parts - or offered to take my number and let me know - all I got was - I am in Department X, Y or Z and know nothing about that. Seems to fit in with the latest trend where HP has gone through lots of effort to hide their phone numbers online and want you to just deal on-line with them. Very frustrating when you need something in a hurry. And the client - they just bought a new Computer and we transferred the data across See more

01.01.2022 It has been a long time since I have been here. But its time to stay more up to date. I had a clients laptop here for data recovery, and concluded yesterday that it may not me feasible to continue - but this morning here is what it showed - and no - I am not waiting for the final result!
