03.01.2022 There are an estimated 20,000 species of Butterfly in the world, 417 of which can be found in Australia. Butterflies and moths belong to the same family called Lepidoptera and both species are important pollinators as well as a vital source of food for other wildlife. Did you know a butterflies wing is actually transparent? It’s made up of thin layers of chitin, which is the same material that makes up the exoskeletons of insects and crabs. On top of the chitin is a layer of... tiny light reflecting scales. Each scale reflects the light different to give the butterflies wing colour and pattern. As a butterfly ages and its wings get damaged some of the scales will fall away leaving transparent patches of wing Butterflies also have taste receptors on their feet that help them identify plants they are landing on, They can drum their feet to release chemicals from a plant and then use the spines the back of their legs to detect the right chemicals using chemo receptors. This helps them find right plant to lay their eggs on or feed from. Reference: childsplayabc Pictured is the Blue triangle Butterfly - I pic I took whilst on a walk :-)
