20.01.2022 The little black dots on this tomato plant are Heliothis eggs that have been parasitised by Trichogramma, one of our parasitoid wasps. Paul Jones reports from the field: We are seeing great results from Trichogramma released in tomatoes to control Heliothis. Mike Kluck from Flagstone Fresh in the Lockyer Valley has had 3 drone releases of Trichogramma in this block. There has been very heavy Heliothis egg lay over the last 6 weeks, so pest pressure is extremely high. This block now has 90 percent egg parasitism, so Mike will soon be switching off the soft sprays and going without insecticides altogether! The parasitised eggs are easy to recognise - rather than turning from white to brown as they mature, they turn black.

16.01.2022 We have a new predator available for aphid control. This native Australian ladybird beetle (Harmonia octomaculata) is an entirely new biocontrol product. It was collected by Dan Papacek from a melon crop in North Queensland, where he found it actively proving its credentials as a voracious aphid predator. We have been busy developing a rearing method for this species and we are pleased to announce that it is now available for treatment of aphid infestations. Although this pr...oduct is still in the R&D phase, it has already proven itself to be both a fantastic aphid predator and a prolific breeder. So, although we have only limited experience applying this species as an introduced biocontrol agent in the field, we are very excited about its potential to provide effective aphid control in a wide range of crop environments. Visit our website to place orders or find out more about this product! https://bugsforbugs.com.au/product/spotted-ladybird/

16.01.2022 IPM consultant Malcolm Durham reports great results combating armoured scale in bromeliads using our feisty Chilocorus ladybird beetles. Oil sprays, which are often recommended as a soft option for scale treatment, are not suitable in bromeliads because they damage the leaves. So, without the help of our ladybird beetles, Malcolm’s clients would have to resort to harsh synthetic pesticides. The insecticides targeted at scale insects often cause new pest problems because they ...knock out the beneficial insects and mites that are busy keeping other pests under control, so using Chilocorus ladybird beetles instead of these sprays allows Malcolm’s clients to keep everything in balance and avoid problems with other pests. We currently have excellent supply of Chilocorus, so contact us if you are interested in employing this little beast to fight scale insects for you in your nursery, garden or orchard! Don’t be alarmed when you start to see spiny little grub-like insects feeding on your scale - these are the larvae of the Chilocorus ladybird beetle. They look completely different to the shiny orange adult beetle that you receive for release in your crop.
12.01.2022 It looks like this predatory hoverfly larva will be having a very merry Christmas, feasting on corn aphids at Mulgowie Farms... beneficial insects like this help Australian farmers reduce their reliance on insecticides and help them achieve sustainable pest management. Bugs for Bugs wishes all our valued customers a joyous festive season and a prosperous 2018. Thanks for your continued support!

04.01.2022 Today we celebrate National Agriculture Day. Our thoughts go out to all the Australian farmers battling fires, drought and other extreme weather events.
03.01.2022 Bugs for Bugs consultant David Loxley experienced Canberra's christmas beetle plague first hand this week. The mild wet weather throughout 2016 was just perfect for these beetles to breed and they have descended on Canberra and the surrounding area in plague proportions during the last couple of weeks.
