18.01.2022 Our current office set up in Broome With a wet winter down in Margaret River we thought there was no better time to scoot up north to get a bit of sunshine before our next project kicks off. It's clear to see COVID has hit small businesses hard so its great to be able to get out and see our beautiful country, at the same time boosting our economy and looking after our own well being too

13.01.2022 With all this talk about building eco- friendly we wanted to get back to basics and share some information about why Hempcrete is such a sustainable material to build your home with. - The hemp plant extracts carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, for every 1 ton of hemp it will adsorb about 2 tons of carbon, once the final product is produced it will lock that carbon away for life. - A Hempcrete home is extremely efficient due to its high insulation and airtightness properti...es. There is little heating or cooling loss from the building, so there is no need to continuously heat (or cool) your home, saving on energy consumption. - Approximately 20 million tons of waste from construction will end up in landfill each year, this includes bricks, concrete, metal, timber and plasterboard. As Hempcrete is a natural product it will compost in the right conditions and if you decide to demolish your hemp home, you can even re-use the Hempcrete in your next build. - Hemp is resilient to pests so there is no need to spray herbicides or pesticides, saving costs in production and saving chemicals leaching into our soil and waterways. These are just some our our favourite facts about hemp, we have a lot more information on our website https://www.newearthliving.com.au/sustainable-building/ or please leave us a comment down below if you would like to know more!

10.01.2022 We have had a fun, productive start to the hemp installation, with Ben @benwhitaker88 and Lex @alexia.jankowski being able to get a few hands on days creating their beautiful masterpiece of a home! We have had a great, enthusiastic team of installers -, Kat - Bens cousin, Chris - Bens younger brother, Chris / Wilbur, Mia and Sean, also known as the Hemp Honkers thanks to an ‘auto correct’ from Lex, which turned out to be very fitting The feature timber and coloured sediment layers turned out better than we expected! Our design was to keep our sediment layers in line with the gradient of the hill and the colour as close to the natural landscape. This piece of jarrah came from behind this wall as well. Its great to be able to incorporate these Biophilic features in to the house design

09.01.2022 The hemp install ended on a high note, with the coloured layers, feature jarrah and the shells all working really nicely The hemp has been curing well, with minimal cracking throughout the majority of the house. We learnt some good things through the hemp process and a main point we took away is how important consistent moisture levels are and when its hot/ dry or cold/ wet, adjusting the batches & tampering to suit the conditions and keeping on top of walls drying too q...uickly - constant awareness required!! We had to apply a mist spray to sections of the North and East walls regularly while constructing and then for days after The hemp has another week of curing until we can apply the lime render to the external walls of the house. Ben and Lex have chosen a nice earthy tone to blend into the surrounding bush and we’re all excited to see how it will turn out @ Torbay, Western Australia

05.01.2022 Absolutely, we couldn't agree more!

03.01.2022 What a view We had Jake and the team from Climate Frame install the UPVC double glazed doors and windows. This was their first hemp house and the guys did a great job! Double glazing is a key design feature in a passive house, with an 80% higher efficiency than single glazing. We used a high performing insulation tape from our friends at Passivhaus, to seal any gaps and completely bridge the frames to the hemp. This also allows the render to bond to the upvc frames to prevent cracking and cold joints @ Torbay, Western Australia

02.01.2022 The hemp cured nicely, taking between 6-8 weeks until the moisture dropped below 15% and we were able to apply the base coat of the lime render. We started on my favourite hemp wall and it was quiet heartbreaking to cover the hemp Due to hemp being a natural fibre it requires an external lime render to attain its waterproofing properties to comply with the BCA (building codes of Australia) The base coat consists of three ingredients, Lime (Tradical Thermo), plasterers sa...nd and water - no cement To give the lime render further strength we wrapped the house in a fibreglass mesh, apply double layers of mesh across the tops of the door and window heads - these are the most vulnerable areas to cracking. Once we have bedded the mesh into the render we then scratch the wall so it gives a rough surface for the top coat of render to stick to! @ Torbay, Western Australia See more
