20.01.2022 I think people forget when practicing Bojutsu that their opponent will be equally as ambitious to cut them down as much as they. If one is not mindful of this in practice, the practitioner of Bojutsu will develop a false belief in their skills and ability, with the practice merely being a dance between two role players. There are stages of development in any weapon art. Applying the set kata with a compliant training partner is but the beginning. In appreciating this, we can ...see that there is a tremendous amount of training required to be truly formidable with the Bo.

20.01.2022 Hatsumi-sensei demonstrating how to do Shiho Furi Gata () with nice flow. Along with the Bo staff, it's also important to practice with the katana. I sthis a part of your regular regime?

20.01.2022 New and existing members can order black hakama and rokushaku bo ( 6 foot white oak staff ) locally at a discount.

18.01.2022 Hane Age nami no ugoki kankaku Renshu. The practice is to develop a good flowing feeling of waves rising and falling. This is an exercise to develop a consistent sliding action of the staff while negotiating all directions with good footwork. Don’t think about creating power in the movement but rather the feeling of control and unity of yourself with the staff.

15.01.2022 A free flowing practice of the first eight sabaki gata with a few slight variations in the moment. Goh five methods Ura Goh reverse five methods Sashi Ai meeting thrusts Funa Bari boat brace... Tsuru no Issoku one step of the crane Ri Iissoku inside step Suso Otoshi hem drop Ura Suso Otoshi inner hem drop The express aim of the practice was to maintain good flow and pressured feeling rather than just adhering to strict form. There are so many possible timings to apply these kata. Each time we practice, it opens more variations. There is not just one way. To believe so would not make you a martial artist in my eyes. Bojutsu is very difficult. As far as I am aware, there is 104 Bojutsu Kata ( and probably more not commonly presented ). Often it is said that the opposite side is counted as another kata, so this would make 208 Kata just for the Rokushaku Bo! The Kukishinden Ryu was famous for Bojutsu and now we can see why! My skill is low. It would take a lifetime of full time study to master Bojutsu. See more

15.01.2022 Dai Sharin ( big wheel & axle ) Kukishinden Ryu This was a shipping tool used by the Kuki Suigun as a weapon of defense.

13.01.2022 Sometimes I feel classes resemble this a little https://youtu.be/8cuihrjLNAo

13.01.2022 The late Senouh and Oguri Shihan performing Ashi Barai.

12.01.2022 The 1993 Daikomyosai had many wonderful bojutsu lessons. But the thing that always impresses me about Hatsumi-sensei is his ability strike an obvious target in a hidden way.

08.01.2022 As with many other dojo around the world, the Roku Shaku Bou, Yari or Naginata seem to be the logical weapons of choice for this period of distancing restrictio...ns. Our dojo is also spending classes practicing Kihon and in depth studies of the Sabaki Gata with periods of Randori. For our students, I am uploading one Kata a week with brief explanations for reference and solo study aid in preperation of intensive weekly dojo sessions. See more

04.01.2022 Three fundamental approaches of executing the kata, Ura Gohou. Each follow the written kata but are applied slightly differently.

01.01.2022 Kimura Masaji (student of Takamatsu Sensei) . "My Bug (martial name) given to me by my teacher is Masakatsu . I was born in Meiji 34 on February 3rd ...and lived in Nara Prefecture, nearby the Kashihara Jing and the house of my teacher Takamatsu Toshitsugu. I was able to train and spar with him almost every day. People say that I looked exactly like my teacher in my older years. . At the age of 17 I was allowed to join Takamatsu Sensei's Dojo with the following three rules: No Liquor, No Smoking, No Fighting! . When I was 36 I received Menkyo Kaiden from my teacher in Tenshin Hyoho Kukishin Ryu Bojutsu and other arts. I had a Dojo with 15 students and had Takamatsu Sensei in to teach. This was 70 years ago. Takamatsu Sensei made it clear to us that Jujutsu is not just for fighting. It is something you must develop for your life during the entirety of your life. I have witnessed Takamatsu Sensei's true fighting style as someone grabbed at his shoulder and he immediately threw him flying across the room. . Takamatsu Sensei's father Gishin Yasaburo in the Edo Period was the castle commander for the Kuki clan. Upon retirement he went into the mountains taking up the calling of a Yamabushi (mountain priest) under the name of Gishinkai. He became an abbot of a small monastery after he received Dai-Sendatsu (Grand Path Leader) title in Honzan-ha Tendai (Kumano) Shugendo. There is record of this at minesan-ji () monastery. . Takamatsu Sensei taught by teaching basics and then the regular techniques. He taught Jujutsu and various patterns. He said that part of the Bugei Juhappan was the ability to speak as a Shodan to Shodan holders and as a Godan to Godan holders. It's essential to communicate to students at their level..." . Kimura Sensei passed away on January 14th, 2000. He was 100 years old and died due to illness. See more
