Kihon Happo (the 8 foundational techniques, we must practice daily) 2. San Shin (GoGyo) (the 5 elemental techniques, we must practice daily) 3. Muto Dori (disarming the armed opponent, disarming the person them self, this is part of the current theme this year) 4. [] [] Control (control the space, control the opponent, this is part of the current theme this year, muto dori is a way to practice control) 5. [] Women’s Self Defense (being able to control without the use of power, muto dori is a way to practice using no power, this is part of the current theme this year) 6. 01.01.2022 Kihon Happou Gata. The important mindset is to understand that the kata are but a means to understand various principles of movement that one will find in fight...ing. Please do not look at the kata as a means to an end. The kata teach "shinken gata" yet, if you only look at the form as the only way to deal with a lapel/sleeve grab, high/low punch, you are mistaken in my opinion. People often want to see if the wrist locks will function when someone grabs you strongly on the lapel. In Japan, the Shihan will often say " dont try the impossible." So, if you feel the power of the opponent, dont force something that wont work. If you do, you are captured by the form or, what YOU want to do. You need to feel and move with the sense of Shizen Gyoun Ryu Sui. The idea to apply a wrist lock when someone has a firm hold is showing you are trapped in technique and am not listening to reality and flowing with it. Again, the Kihon are real techniques, however, one has to apply them in context and in the correct moment. Do not think you will apply a kata, true to form, from an attack on the street. The goal is to utilise as required, moment to moment, free from thought, a principle or movement taught in one of the kihon happou gata. If the mindset is real, the kata can be brought to life and thus made applicable. Often people say they dont train in kata. I think they cannot see its necessity or how it teaches them to be free from kata. Its their mindest that hinders their understanding and growth. You learn freedom from kata. If you are free from the start, what are you doing? Where did you get your principles and structure of movement to aid in unarmed or weapon handling? Dont jump ahead, because you may just slip. But, knowing these people, they will blame the shoe brand rather than their inability to jump well and keep their balance. Lol. When you try to move forward too quickly, become too philosophical about the training, concern yourself too much with the meanings of the kanji etc, you are moving away from actual physical skill development. The test will be for them when they actually have to defend themselves one day. When reality hits, all of that just dissapears and you are left with your training. Something to think about. See more
