25.01.2022 Don't worry about what you look like to others, just work hard to get the basics right...for it is from there that the great age-old principles and concepts reside. Daishihan Dr Hodson.

25.01.2022 From all of us here at Hands on Defence - Spirit Of Ninjutsu and the Bujinkan Melbourne dojo's, Happy New Year 2021! Regards, Dai Shihan Dr Hodson.

25.01.2022 For the upcoming month of February 2020, our training schedule will see us focus on the two major study areas of: (1) Ryu-ha: 'Togakure Ryu - Ninpo Taijutsu'. [Note: This School is translated as something like 'Hidden Door School' and provides the opportunity for us to learn and improve our skills in areas such as "Taijutsu Ukemi Gata", "Shinobi Gaeshi Gata" and "Santo Tonko no Kata".]...naturally as part of our training in this ryu-ha we will incorporate in to techniques use... of the Togakure Ryu densho weapons such as Shuko/Tekagi/Ashiko, Metsubishi, Shuriken etc.] (2) Weapon(s) - 'Sticks'. In particular this month we will focus on 'hanbo', 'tanbo' and 'tessen' (half-staff, baton, and the art of the war-fan illustrated through 10"-12" stick on body controls) techniques. Also the School newsletter (#218) is also ready for pick-up at any of our dojo locations. This months newsletter presents: 'Nin-po and "Saiminjutsu" (the art of hypnosis)'. [Photo inset of my qualification as a practitioner in Ericksonian Hypnosis Communications from nearly 20 years ago - a method of indirect hypnosis named afterDr. Milton Erickson (photo also inserted). A prominent American psychiatrist and psychologist, Erickson is widely regarded as the father of hypnotherapy. His discoveries have influenced a wide spectrum of therapy from strategic family therapy to neuro-linguistic programming.] Regards,Dai-Shihan Dr Hodson.

25.01.2022 So to start the 2021 New Year off, I just finished my 229th 'Hands On Defence' School member newsletter (January, 2021) related to the topic of ninpo/ninjutsu a...nd budo taijutsu. This months edition is written on the perspective of the 'teacher of combat in ninjutsu' and among other things...the context for authentic unarmed/armed combat experience/insight, proficiency of professional/technical skills, currency in accreditation incl. recognition of modern combatives/weapons if taught, the attainment of life skills relevant to the art, etc. Hmm...as a licensed teacher (Shidoshi) and an accredited Dai-Shihan in the art, this one even made me consider/compare my own qualities/attributes vs. such a teacher - that is if you consider depth in this aspect to be important. Onward's we go with our research, practice and reflection... www.handsondefence-spiritofninjutsu.com "...as real as it gets" [Newsletter available to adult members from any of our dojo locations from this week.]

24.01.2022 To my School members, I trust you will enjoy reading this months newsletter! Regards, Dai-Shihan Dr Hodson.

19.01.2022 All the best to our facebook page followers...thanks for the interest in 2020, much appreciated! Yours in Budo, Dai-Shihan Dr Hodson.

19.01.2022 In addition to our more traditional dojo training, we also incorporate modern street/anti-terrorism type simulations where for example we practice unusual/unplanned ukemi (rolls) such as restraint (tied/hand-cuffed) based training including blindfolded, plus more typical cardio large bag work (replicating weight of person/impact strike training) as well as obstacle combat with moving/striking bag work simulating crowd/multiple offender penetration/exit drills. 18.01.2022 Given the ongoing and unfolding Coronavirus situation we must ensure we respect the current situation around us and 'do our bit' in terms of reducing the possibility of further virus infections...so, please note the following personal safety/hygiene considerations at our dojo locations and treat them as basic requirements in the interim (including but not limited to for example): - Students are requested to not attend training nights if not feeling well especially if cold/fl...u symptoms are at all evident. - If you have been travelling overseas recently then please do not attend training for at least 14 days after returning e.g. no signs/symptoms during the 'self-quarantine' period. - Please avoid 'hand-shakes' and any un-necessary social/cultural skin contact however, given the nature of the martial art involves physical contact whilst training, please ensure at the very least to wash hands using the sanitisers/soap at various locations around the Freeway Sports Centre and Nagambie Mechanics Institute soon afterwards before leaving. - Avoid congregating with other large groups around the locations e.g. be aware of the possibility of transmission in groups. - Whilst on the premises, generally maintain at least a metre away from other people - training partners excepted when performing. - If coughing/sneezing, please use basic hygiene in terms of sneezing in to your elbow and coughing in to your hand etc e.g. away from the direction of others. Keep in mind that the various locations we use are owned privately and have their own safety policies/measures regarding the current situation including general hygiene procedures and requirements...and so we all must follow them. Further, we must any Government instructions and so I have also copied a Victorian Government document regarding same. Lastly, as things continue to unfold, like you I will also be keeping an eye on our changing training 'landscape' so if you have any concerns or questions etc, please reach out to me and/or speak to me at the dojo. Keep safe, Daishihan Dr Hodson.

12.01.2022 Just how badass was the Togakure Ry??? Today I received an email asking me I don’t see much historical information available regarding the Togakure Ry, in yo...ur opinion just how badass do you think they really were??? This is a great question; it requires a lot of explanation. First, keep in mind that the actions of the shinobi were never meant to be made public, so it is likely that 95% of the ninja’s history will never be known. But we can get good glimpses from reliable source texts as to the types of missions they were involved in. In the case of the Togakure Ry, during the 1500’s the headmasters of the lineage were of the Momochi family. According to Toda Shinryuken’s oral traditions, there were no less than ten Momochi family members that acted as Grandmasters of the Togakure Ry. They were considered, along with the Hattori family and the Fujibayashi family, to be the supreme commanders of the Iga-shu shinobi. Today we often refer to these families as Jnin (). Therefore, in my humble opinion, any actions that were carried out by the Momochi family and their supporters would have been executed by Togakure Ry shinobi. On top of this there is plenty of evidence to show that the Fujibayashi family were from Togakure village and that their ninjutsu was of Togakure origins. For one final nail, we also know that the Hattori family, Momochi family and the Fujibayashi family had extremely close family connections, including intermarrying, adopting each other’s children, etc. So, it is likely that the differences between these three families’ styles of ninjutsu would not be that different. Rather, it is likely they shared many similarities. With keeping all of this in mind I would like to introduce an entry in a historical record that shows just how extremely effective these ninja families were. In the chronicles of Ozuki Tokimoto (), there is an entry for February 15, 1502, that says when the local rulers of Iga tried to secure their control over the peasants of the region for their idleness, the peasants asked for help from the yamabushi in Kyoto on Atago Mountain. Soon after, dozens of yamabushi (mountain priests) from Atago, accompanied by about 400 men, invaded Iga Province. However, the Iga-shu (the shinobi) rushed into the Yamabushi camp at night and defeated them without having a single formal battle, leaving only a dozen or so people to return to Kyoto. This was described as an extremely "strange occurrence because the Iga people must have been well-trained and used guerrilla warfare methods such as surprise attacks and distractions. It must be so as they easily defeated the Yamabushi, who were known to have been skilled in battle, with less than 20 men. So, in summary, I believe that as this was 1502, the Momochi family were most likely directly involved in these actions. Being that the attack was coming from Kyoto it would have been the Momochi and the Kami-Hattori clans that they would encounter first. So, if the Momochi family was involved, I think it is safe to say that it was the Togakure Ry. To answer his questionthe Togakure Ry were more badass than 400 battle hardened men from Atago Mountain, where the men there were known to be masters of the martial arts. This is probably why they were even able to defeat Oda Nobuo's army during the early part of the Tensho-Iga War. Ninp Ichizoku!!! 07.01.2022 Happy New Year!...and in the month of January 2020, our training schedule will see us focus on two major study areas, namely: (1) 'Shinden Fudo Ryu - Dakentaijutsu'. [Note: The School is translated as something like 'Immovable Heart School' and has a specialty based on hard striking techniques. There is also the additional section to the School that focuses on jutaijutsu however for the purposes of this months training, the dakentaijutsu techniques will be our primary focus.]... (2) Independent to the above specific ryu techniques, we will also study various 'Blades/ Sharps' as our months weapons category, encompassing for example: - Katana (Bokken used in our traditional sword training) - Wakazashi/ Kodaichi / Shoto (Short sword training), and - Tanto (Knife training). ...also the School newsletter (Edition #217) is now ready for pick up at any one of our dojo locations and presents an interesting look at "The OODA Loop". 06.01.2022 Changing times in training...private classes for our early adopters! :)

06.01.2022 In March 2020, our training schedule will see us focus on two major study areas, namely: (1) 'Koto Ryu - Koppojutsu'. [Note: The School is translated as something like 'Tiger Knocking Down School'. The style involves hard characteristic hitting and tough/rough and powerful techniques using quite short and linear forms. Although clearly more to it than just this, one analogy however regarding the concept of the school was to be able to knock the tiger down with the tips of th...e fingers.] (2) Independent to the above specific ryu techniques, we will also study 'Flexibles' as our months weapons category, encompassing for example: - Kusari Fundo (Weighted Chain) - Hojo (Rope) - Kyoketsu Shoge (Hook Blade with Weight & Cord) - Kusari Gama (Sickle & Chain) - Modern Handcuffs. This months March 2020 newsletter (edition #219) is also ready for pick up at any one of our dojo locations. This months newsletter is based on 'The Mindset Related to Fear'. Students are reminded that classes are offered Monday, Wednesday and Fridays...includes adult and junior (Ninja Cadet) classes. Regards, Dai Shihan Dr Hodson
