22.01.2022 Dryopteris filix-mas Dryopteris filix-mas is more commonly referred to as a male fern. It is a woodland fern that is very hardy. It may not be the tropical or exotic plant you are looking for, but its hardiness will help protect other plants. It is best used when it is planted around other trees as ground cover.

18.01.2022 Plant selection and care is an incredibly important part of planning a garden; though, it can be a bit information heavy in some cases. There is so much to learn about plants, how they interact with each other and how they interact with the environment that it can be a lot to take in. However, it is worth your time to learn as much as you can about the plants in your garden because the more you know about them, the better you will be able to grow and protect them.

17.01.2022 Bees actually prefer certain colors over others in the garden. They love blue, violet, purple, yellow and white flowers. When you plant flowers, consider planting these close together to help the bees both find the plants and navigate from plant to plant. You can plant lavender, coneflowers or pumpkin vines to attract bees. Another tip for keeping bees is to provide a plate or shallow bowl with some water and some rocks for the bees to land on. Keep them in a visible spot so ...they can be easily spotted and remember to replace the water daily. You might also consider keeping bee hives. In the wild, bees build their own hives but these hives are often destroyed by developments. Creating a man-made hive is not difficult and gives you the chance to open your own bee colony. You need a hive stand, a bottom board and deep hive bodies. You also need inner and telescoping outer cover, supers, frames and a foundation. The best time to set up a new bee hive is in the spring when the honeybees are reproducing at a fast pace. Consider setting up the hives in places where they won’t be disturbed by humans and where they will have open places to fly. If there’s no water in the area, you’ll need to set up a small body of water like a pool, tub or bird bath. Beekeeping involves some expenses and training. However, the bees do an amazing service for the garden and for the food you eat. If you’re keen, they also provide honey that you harvest and use all year. Before setting up a beekeeping outfit, be sure to check with your local council. Some councils have rules and regulations regarding beekeeping, and you want to ensure that you’re operating within the constraints of local law.

15.01.2022 Here’s a brief guide to choosing the perfect container size for a plant: Choose a 24-inch diameter container for large peppers, squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, artichokes or when planting a combination of vegetables and herbs. Choose an 18-inch diameter pot when you’re growing broccoli, cauliflowers, cabbage, small eggplant, small peppers, a specific number of tomatoes and any time you’re growing greens in multiples.... A 14-inch pot is perfect for small things like herbs, cabbages, collards, a few spinach plants, rocket and any non-heading lettuce plants. Keep things limited to three to four plants when using a small pot. Use a 10-inch pot when you’re working with small plants like lettuce, strawberries or single or small herb plants. You also need to choose the right container type. Terracotta clay pots are having a renaissance but remain a traditional choice for any plant. Remember that these containers are heavy and more expensive than other containers, so if you need a lot of containers, consider finding a mix. Glazed ceramic containers are also a popular choice because they add style to gardens. They do well in the winter; however, they are also expensive and the large pots are difficult to move because they are so heavy. Plastic containers are a common choice because they’re inexpensive, lightweight and durable. If you shop around, you can generally find a plastic container that suits your taste or the look you’re going for in the garden. These containers can crack if you buy poorly made ones, so have a look at high quality containers or be prepared to buy these in bulk for large gardens. Wooden containers are popular for outdoor use in gardens. You can get them from garden shops or by repurposing wooden containers or barrels to transform them into planters. These containers last for years; however, they are heavy, particularly when filled with soil. They also become difficult to move as they get older so you must choose wisely when selecting a home for these containers. Concrete containers are also possible; however, they’re less common in home gardens. They are the most durable container you can find and heavier than all the other containers. If you’re looking to create a permanent spot in the garden for plants, a concrete container is an economical choice; though, very large containers can be expensive. Although they don’t sound attractive, you can dress up a concrete container to make it fit within the garden design. A few extra tips for choosing plant containers: Make sure all plant containers are seated on trays or dishes and contain adequate drainage holes at the bottom. Match the size of the pot to the plant size and growth dimensions, allowing enough space to grow naturally. For taller plants, choose wider pots for stability. Wash pots which you plan to reuse with a very small amount of disinfectant and plenty of water to kill off chemicals, mold and bacteria. Rinse thoroughly

15.01.2022 Lush Lawns one of the first step in garden design is to determine just how much lawn you want. you can asses this by listing your requirements as to : * Recreation and entertainment, including children needs.... * Aesthetic value - well kept lawns look good, make a garden look spacious and set off other plants security - a clear space around the house is particularly important in bushfire - prone areas, it also helpsdeter prowlers. * maintain open view - DENNIS HUNDSCHEINLDT

13.01.2022 Fertilizing Plants Plants are best fertilized every two months or in accordance with specific plant requirements. Though there are all-purpose fertilizer options, become familiar with what works best with different plant species for optimal success.... Pruning and Maintenance Pruning should be minimized to the best health of your plants. Remove dead leaves, petals and old branches from plants regularly to keep them healthy. However, don’t attack plants until they need pruning otherwise you risk cutting off healthy parts of the plant. When you plant and space according to their individual growth requirements, your plants will need little pruning. Propagation Learn the propagation process for each plant as they vary which is the process of producing more plants by dividing, grafting or taking cuttings. Unlike seed, plant divisions and cuttings result in an identical plant from its benefactor. It is a cost-effective way of growing plants. Pest Control Inspect containers, soil and plants when buying to prevent pest infection. Remove any leaves or stems if only a few are infected. Spray your plant with water and a little washing up liquid to remove any further traces. Choose plant varieties that are pest and disease resistant whenever possible. Be observant around the health of your plants, monitor growth and vitality. Poor maintenance habits can weaken plants. Treat at the earliest stages.

13.01.2022 The biggest mistake you can make with a soft leaf Buffalo, such as Sir Walter DNA Certified lawn, is to mow the grass too short; it can leave the lawn in extremely poor condition. All soft leaf Buffalo lawns should be mowed at a height of between 35 and 65 mm. Shorter than this and the lawn will lose its lovely green leaf which can leave the lawn with a yellow or light green colouring, as well as stunting its growth and decreasing the density of the thatch layer or sward. You... could also leave the lawn in poor health and therefore at risk of disease and pests. If left in this poor condition the Buffalo lawn will find it difficult to fight off invasions of pests and disease. The reduced sward layer can increase the chance of weed infestations taking hold in your lawn. This less dense layer of sward also allows your lawn to be more easily overcome by drought conditions, extremely hot temperatures and high winds; potentially causing bare patches in your lawn. Overall, mowing your Buffalo lawn too short opens up the gates to so many issues. If you have been mowing your Buffalo lawn too short, immediately raise the mowing height, consider switching to a rotary mower if you are currently using a cylinder mower and you should quite quickly see a change in the health of your lawn.If it doesn’t recover quickly then you may need to reconsider other lawn care activities to help it to regain its health. Ensure that your Buffalo lawn is receiving the right amount of water for the current season, mow on a regular basis and at the correct height, and fertilise regularly and correctly. Don’t despair too much, the great thing about soft leaf Buffalo lawns is their ability to self-repair. With a bit of TLC it should recover quite quickly and any bare patches should be fixed naturally. If your Buffalo lawn is in need of some serious patching or re-installation just contact the team at Harden Park Lawns. We grow and supply soft leaf Buffalo turf that is perfectly suited to our local climate

05.01.2022 Potassium in Turf Potassium is required by the turfgrass plant in relatively large amounts compared to other nutrients. Potassium use is second only to nitrogen and of course the elements sourced from water and the atmosphere; carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Potassium plays an important role in many key turfgrass processes and developmental phases, many of which have a major impact on plant resilience and stress resistance. As the underlying goal of turfgrass management is to su...Continue reading
