22.01.2022 Learning through play - what does it mean? Our philosophy is based on learning through play. You might have heard us use this term before. As trained educators we know what this means, though after a conversation with a parent recently we thought it worth discussing the topic with you in more detail. We have a fantastic transition to school program for our school leavers, which is in addition to the learning we are about to discuss. ... What your children are "learning" and developing in our early childhood setting, from the day they arrive are muscle movements designed to develop their brains and bodies. Muscle tone & strength, cognitive skills such as spatial awareness, pattern and other recognition skills, fine motor skills and the development of the muscles in their hands, Social skills, confidently thriving in both individual play and group settings as well as empathy and eating as part of a group. When a child is "playing" the activities and play resources we make available are very carefully selected to develop these essential skills and these are all essential skills needed for learning at school and other functions in life. Feedback from school teachers of the current generation of school starters is that they lack upper body strength, which can relate to a technology dependent generation and a lack of experiences that we may call "risky play". Remember as a child when you used to climb trees ? As a generation of parents, love for our children and wanting to protect them often sees us discourage these risky behaviours. So we need to find other ways for our children to build these upper body muscles - our programs are working on developing and enhancing all these functions while the children play. The children do not have access to electronic devices at our service, noisy flashy battery operated toys are avoided in favour of resources that are inspired by nature.
