19.01.2022 Have you got a dead space in your garden that you'd really like to fill? A tight driveway edge became an opportunity for a hedge of slender-growing Sasanqua Camellia (Camellia sasanqua 'Edna Butler'). A good shallow-rooted choice that can be espaliered to a screen behind if the owner feels it isn't closing in quickly enough. The TerraCottem soil conditioning method is a great support when the planting zone is so tight, and was applied here.... The Blue Mountains is such a great place to plant azaleas and annual colour! A nice free-draining bed, again planted with the help of TerraCottem. Looking forward to seeing these plants bring some colour into the lives of the owners. So ... what are you going to do with that dead space?

17.01.2022 Mid-winter is upon us! Spring is officially less than 6 weeks away! Look around your sleeping garden. Did you notice: -New trees, shrubs or vines that need to go in?... -Existing trees or shrubs that need pruning? -Lawns that need spraying for weeds or bindis? -Perennials that need cutting back or dividing? -Garden soil that needs improving (or pH adjusting)? -Late spring annuals (like Californian poppies, sweet peas, cornflower, gypsophila, heartsease, nasturtiums) that need sowing? -Hydrangeas that need colouring? The garden is not really sleeping. Nor am I! Reach out if you'd like to get across some of these tasks while the opportunity is here ...

17.01.2022 So the hedge-clippers and secateurs are sharpened and working. It'll be a couple of years till this Japanese Box (Buxus microphylla var. japonica) looks amazing as a pom-pom topiary, but it's on its way. Here we are almost at mid-winter. What needs pruning to shape -- or for correction -- at your place?

10.01.2022 Great weather for ducks, and great weather for planting! This client had a choice between a Colorbond fence or a hedge for the front fence -- and it was a no brainer. Plant choice was narrowed down to the lilly pillies, and from there to 'Backyard Bliss' Lilly Pilly (Syzygium paniculata 'Backyard Bliss'). Spacing is at 60cm with a final trimmed height of around 1.8m (given a couple of years). Craig Abbott of C & M Wholesale Plants sourced a load of very high quality plants fo...r us, all tip-pruned and ready to go. Like his eye for quality, I do. Happy client and happy plants in a good spot. What can I say? Happy days!

04.01.2022 Sometimes damage in the garden can be long-lived yet easy to miss. I’m seeing a lot of Azalea lace bug damage lately. Silvery and bronzy leaves *may* look nice on your Azaleas, but they are a sign of leaf death! Most of the damage was done months ago, and the bugs are now overwintering, waiting for spring when they strike out onto new foliage, sucking the life out of it. ... Catching it early before it looks like this makes all the difference ...

02.01.2022 Bring some colour and variety into your garden with that most delightful of flowering winter perennials, the Hellebore (or ‘Winter Rose’). These are ‘Anna’s Red’ Hellebore (Helleborus x hybridus ‘Anna’s Red’), and foliage is a treat as well as the flowers. Your winter garden doesn’t have to be dull. Talk to me about livening things up!
